Dodge DR Convertible Coupe comes out of winter hiberation....
DJ194950 replied to Semmerling's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Out of the left field - but does it have the free wheeling transmission ( when throttle is released) with pull a handle cable to in-gage or shift out of this feature? Rode in a Desoto coupe of this vintage many years ago (too many) that had that as an option (I assume) . DJ -
You can also do what my father used to do, If the fix was making him mad on a car he take the car and trade it in.. ? Old cars ( with issues) get sold at reasonable prices to someone else (preferably some you really do not care for). Patience is required on a regular basis when working on All cars! DJ

Most likely work fine, just make sure were it gets mounted is Well grouned. Probably the ground connection for this is form the mounting points(canister) . DJ

Tires, wheels, bearings, and brake maintenance....
DJ194950 replied to John-T-53's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
That is too good looking to actually use! It may get dirty in use! Are you sure you do not have and another good one to drive with? Otherwise, take a good picture ( blown up in size) to have have framed and hang on the shop wall. Maybe the fireplace mantel! ? Very nice work! DJ -
Your idea for the JB weld repair worked well for me and it is still working 6+ years. DJ

I want those. Which would kill me fastest or maybe give the biggest smile.?? ? DJ

From what I have read for years- Changing from or to Dot 5 requires all cylinders And lines cleaned out with alcohol or brake clean type solvents to remove 100% of the old fluid. Dot 5 is totally incompatible with any any of the other dot spec. type fluids and turns to a jelly substance that does not work well in brake systems. As for dot 5 swelling rubber parts- it does not, period. But does no harm to paints. Otherwise not usually a great choice. Most all dot spec fluids absorb moisture that is in most all brake system and needs to exchanged after some period of time. Problem exclusive to dot 5 is is it does not absorb moisture but it still gets in the system from the air and stays free in the system. Rust is the result in both types of fluid but I assume? more so in systems with dot 5 fluid . Also fluid boiling point is lower as compared to newer type of Dot fluids. Both types require total fluid exchange at some interval. Again I'd assume-More so with dot 5. DJ

Just thoughts- Is the booster Too big? Plumbed properly? Vacuum checked while driving? Block vacuum off and check brake function again? Perhaps a larger bore master cylinder which would give a longer pedal stroke and softer pedal? Free play in the brake piston rod correct? Brain drained- need to go rest now! ? Well, you asked for thoughts (guesses) .? DJ

One good machinist at the factory early in the week did one and the other a lazy machinist after a boozy lunch on Friday afternoon. No worries as to the rough machining as nothing rides on the area. DJ

Drums lock up when I torque anchor bolt nuts on 48 Desoto
DJ194950 replied to MarcDeSoto's topic in P15-D24 Forum
I cut the slots in the bolts as shown by others and used what is named as a Drag Link Socket to hold. Others have shown pics of those also. A quick look at EBay shows 100's for sale new and used. Most are 1/2" drive but several were 3/8" and a few were 1/4" drive. Most in the $ 12-20 for 1- 2-3 sockets and usually free shipped. Many old cars had replaceable parts in the drag links therefore the tool for disassembly. Just in case you still have problems with the front brakes. Just remember that after all the fun you are having you can be the one who answers others forum questions on brakes/adjustment/etc! ? DJ -
Getting my 46 WD15 repaired and back on the road
DJ194950 replied to lostviking's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
Those HVLP type guns solf at HF and many others use about 50 psi at the incoming air, but only about 20PSI comes out at the spray tip, its part of the gun makeup- I read. Only have and old Devilbiss gun I bought 40+ years ago. Still works Great! I have a 3 HP 60 gal compressor to work with. So you will need the 50 PSI. The real question is the CFM required by the gun and what the compressor can supply at least for 5 minutes at a time. DJ -

Well, I would love to come out East if I had a solid driver to do it. ( No shipping for me). I am between old car drivers at this point and the new California taxes on almost everything including a new heavy tax on imported Teas.! Time for a rebellion? DJ

You rich English can just ship your cars over and enjoy a summer in the colonies and ship back, maybe with another collectible car in the same container?? I have read of Aussies and Kiwis of coming to the west coast with their cars. Just to show and drive and return. Why not the east coast for the Euros? DJ

My understanding at least in the past several years was that Napa filter were made by Wix and all Napa filter #'s were just just one less or was it more #. Something like your Napa filter in the pic is 3012 and Wix part would be a 63012. I may have these #'s crossed up but they were similar as per my example. DJ

Kanter's is fine if Chinese parts way overpriced do not bother you. They have all sizes available or at least they did. Others mentioned have been good as will as Terril Machine has been mentioned here many times. Egge is very good, just not the cheapest, but if quality matters I do not mind a few $$ more. Just confirm with them all parts are US made before paying $$. I believe they are, but- _ Just one opinion. DJ

DJ194950 replied to James_Douglas's topic in P15-D24 Forum

Can't get front brake shoes to go in so drum will fit on 48 DeSoto.
DJ194950 replied to MarcDeSoto's topic in P15-D24 Forum
One question, when checking with what ever tool you are using to get brakes close to proper clearance ( I know you have not got them on yet) but per the book you are also supposed to look at the squareness (level) to the backing plate. When I did the brakes on the 50 Ply. I had 3 of the 4 where just fine. One when angled and not square to the backing plate. My 1946-54 repair manual showed this and how to correct this condition. Tilted shoes may cause this not fitting ? if off much at all. Just a thought to add to the diagnosis procedures. DJ -
Several manufacturers made those clocks back in the day, but were they all factory installed, dealer installed and optional (I am sure) and who did put the in a car them new or later?? DJ

DJ194950 replied to MarcDeSoto's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Even brand new brake lining are allowed to have some asbestos in them per some posts here in the recent past. How much? Less than before? I do not know myself. As you love the internet for answers maybe a search to see what is up per the government people who make the rules is in order. Myself, I do not sweat the small stuff these days and wear a good mask, but that is just me. Asbestos is not strictly forbidden it seems. Surprised me at the time. DJ -
1935 Plymouth outside door handle install help
DJ194950 replied to rrunnertexas's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Dug the the mental cobwebs of my old brain back to when I had a 1937 Plymouth with the same issue and I Think that I had to hold the exterior handle up to position as close as possible and push the latch catch in and out several times slowing while some gentle pressure inward on the handle and it slide in? A possibility, maybe ?? ? DJ -
