ckeck out the cable at: fifthaveinternetgarage.com. looks nice. $55 seems a little pricy, but has labeled t handle that appears to correct size. a while back there was a used original priced at $95. start price and sold for that on ebay. so $55 seems ok for new. doug. happy hunting

could you possibly have incorrect solenoid?? from what i've read there were some different models with the one major differance was the lenght of the lenght of the plunger rod. the mopar unit is supposed to be about 1" retracted and about 1-3/8" activated as measured from end of round flange to end of plunger per pics. best pics i could get with my well used tape measure. sorry! stay after it bulldog! happy hunting doug

is trans a r-10? if so, with cap off and solenoid energized the plunger plate pulls down and opens the points for the pull in windings leaving on only the hold windings energized. check to make sure the lower set of points are completely opened. maybe they are not fully opened and making slight contact. dirty plunger? or point adjustment. just my thoughts as i've testing 2 6v. solenoids and repairing a 12v. unit. doug 50 4dr. 49 suburban

for leaks arround pumpkin: drain oil. loosen nuts or bolts holding it in, but do not remove all way out. move pumpkin outward, will not come out much as axles stop much movement. take some medium thickness cotton string from your old kite. soak it in permatex sealer. i like aviation type. make big mess on hands. wrap string on outside of bolts(studs) make about 3-4 complete wraps. tighten pumpkin back in. no more leak. clean hands if possible. oh ya, refill rearend oil. learned this back about late 60's from a man who had forgot by then than i know even now. but maybe that's not saying too much. at least i remember something he showed me. enjoy doug

i also bought one of those CHEAP covers on ebay. same co. though i only paid about $75 plus $20 shipping as i remember. junk in my opinion. same with other panels i got from them. cut them up for pieces only to make panels for foot areas. the piece your pics show is sitting outside in the rain. not even worth trying to make it fit. my orginal looks about as bad as yours, i'll just make my own repair pieces to repair. same amount of work, better results to be had. love those round oversize foot pedal openings??. supposed to be square to fit original seals that are avail. how about that nicely shaped hole for master cyl.?? not even close. mine looks even worse. don't even think about their rocker panels. not even close. bought some for my 49 suburban 3-4 years ago. time had passed and i didn't realise that they were the same company. never again. thanks for letting me get that off my chest. will finish floor panel work this spring. thank god the 50 4 dr. doesn't need rockers. now i know others make repair panels i'll always check with the forum being buying. tks doug

what you are thinking is elongated hole is the recessed area cut on BOTH the cluster gear shaft and the reverse idler gear shafts holes. both shafts are cut for a moon shaped key to fit into flat cut into the side of shaft. the rounded part fits into the case recesses to lock the shafts from rotating they are about 3/16 deep. shafts are driven in until keys are tight to case recess. this also locks shafts from moving forward and the tails shaft housing or the od section block keeps them from backing out. good eyes, almost!! later..dinner and tv time. doug

some pics of differences between od case on left and std. on right. 1 more bolt hole, 1 more oil hole, and finally the one upper left is drilled hole with machined relief on lower edge for a steel tube to support shifter rail of od trans. a machine shop could make these changes but where would you come up with the steel support tube for shifter rail?? 2 nd. pic is of overdrive unit and a stock mainshaft. the overdrive mainshaft is on about half as long and machined very different for od parts. some parts will interchange between the trans: cluster gear and shaft, reverse idler and shaft, first/reverse slider gear, and rest of main trans parts if trans are of same era. later trans changed sycro stles and will not interchange. easyest to find a complete od trans. use parts of your orginal trans if needed for repairs. there is one on ebay now-a r10-g for $300. search for overdrive transmissions hope this info help to clear up questions. or did i open a can of worms?? doug 50 4 dr. project 49 suburban rodded

napa sells the oil recommended ot the 5th. ave site. about $12 per gallon. part #65-201. wasn't avail on the shelf there but was in their warehouse, so will have tomorrow am. also went online to cole hersee about the kickdown switch. came up with part # 9601-02. only problem was nobody had one. napa said zero avail. anywhere, suggested two other places to try. one of them-fleetpride- had one avail in michigan. their computer showed they had never sold any, but could have it shipped at my expense. ended up ordering it at a total cost of $25. should be here in 3-4 days. no problem for me as my project car is still wainting for me to go outside and clean and paint the under hood area and then install rebuilt engine and trans. yes there are kickdown switches avail on ebay. several listed for ford, but i believe they are the same. buy it now price of i believe was $26 plus $6 shipping?? anyway saved about $7 buying locally. may not have been worth the trouble but $7 is still $7 to be spent on car.

i'm rebuilding a r12 overdrive for my 50 4 dr. project. 95% done. i have a r10 brochure on r 10's and it says to use 40 or 50 wt. motor oil or 80 wt mineral based trans oil. since the 3 sp. box and the trans comingle oil 40 wt. seems awful thin and i have no idea where to find mineral oil trans fluid. so i'm asking what you are using?. i'd ask george a. but his phone is ALWAYS BUSY. have read from several of you that he loves to talk, so i'm asking for your wise experience for help. thanks doug 50 ply 4 dr. 49 ply suburban

have you checked for vacuam leaks? disconnect and plug vac. line to wipers and anything else. smooth out? spray carb cleaner arround carb, top to bottom, also at intake manifold gasket. does engine rpm change? if indicates a leak, which can cause a small miss up backfiring. some things to check if not already done. good luck.

in the early 70's i worked at a equipment rental co. we had lots of rought terrain forklift with chrysler flatheads. when ever a water pump was replaced standard procedure per the owner was to flush block and radiator.after pump replaced added 50-50 water and antifreeze. but always added bars-leak and about 12-16 0z. of water soluable oil (to lubricate the pump according to owner). what is soluable oil? where would get it now? i sure don't know since i have never done this to my cars. bars leak every time?? preventive maintainence i guess!!! good in a chevy??? try brand new instead of rebuilt. could be worse, try changing pumps on any thing 90's and on. days work rather than an hour. enjoy. dj194950 50 plymouth stocker in progress

can a 201 block be bored enough to 3.250? thats what 218 &230 are. differences between these are the stroke lenght. pistons are same dia. to make a 230 from a 218 require: crank(longer stroke), rods to match(diffenent lenght), flywheel (8 hole vs. 4, and weights way more. i have heard of them being called a 70 lb. flywheel.). also do not run the heavy front lower pully.they only used one without the counterbalance. i recently compared my 218 flywheel to the 230. both where 14 &5/8 in. across widest point on ring gear and both where 146 teeth. my 230 motor was taken out of a forklit but according to block #'s was made for a 41-47 military truck. the only change was to use the front motor mount- chain cover plate, which is top motor mount vs. forklift has lower mount. as long as a late motor uses same pattern on chain cover, should be no problem using your original front mount and bell housing if flywheels are the same dia. many decades ago i put a 218 from a 50 dodge or ply. in a 37 plymouth with no problems. just used some of both.details long gone from this old brain. starting with a 230 motor will probably be quickest and cheapest in the long run. also, 50plymouth.com has great details on 218-230 change. playing with old cars is fun if you take your time and read great sites like this one. good luck dj4950ply 49 suburban rodded 85 % done 50 4 dr. stock project

try talking to a chrome shop about removing left over chrome.they used to always put parts to be rechromed in a tank with electrical leads reversed to first remove old chrome and nichel plating.maybe cheap way to prepare them for paint.? them you could just use bondo/high build primer and paint to match car or contrasting color.? a nother thought-- check out brizbumpers.com. tthey make polished alum. bumper in 3 rib.4 rib, 5 rib for many cars, and reguarily make custom bumpers. best part is that they are cheaper than rechroming stockers.many are listed at $215.00. i must mention on the web site no prices are listed, but if you google briz, schroll down and see their dealers, who do list prices. i checked one of them at; yogis.com. their price was below list at $193.50. i don't know your location but "yogis" is in iowa. find a dealer nearest to you if interested. by the way, these bumpers are undrilled. make fit your brackets. just my thoughts. happy hunting!

radials can be run with tubes, but you MUST RUN REAL RUBBER TUBES!!! anything else is asking for major trouble.instant flat.just like a blowout common in the old days. i experienced it once, going 60mph in a curve, downhill in traffic.only my angel kept me from the cement wall. the tire dealer i worked for at the time said they were SUPPOSED to be radial tubes.took them all out same day! the real rubber tubes are hard to find and extremely expensive. easier not to even go there.

do you need a front sump or rear sump?. i have a front sump from a truck. the dipstck enters the pan on driver side on the pan, not through the block. i'm changing to rear sump to install in a 50 4dr. pan looks good but appears to have a sealer smeared arrond the dipstick entry plate. was it leaking?? sorry i don't know but looks like easy to remove sealer and repair properly by rebrazing plate to pan.. $25.00 plus shipping cost???. sorry but i live on the "right coast",which is really the west coast!. zip 95350 i you want to check shipping. willing to ship greyhound express, found it to be cheapest and fastest. believe it or not. i bought a 49 ply. nos fender from long island n.y guy shipped greyhound to ca. for $70.00 and i got it in three days.unbelieveable anyway, if interested let me know.on this board or:dougj07@sbcglobal.net(best). new to this great site. love the info.
