Agreed! When Jay Fisher passed, so did quality reproduction swan necks. In 1990 I purchased a set of his mirrors for my 41 Plymouth for $650.00. To this day they still look perfect. A man of few words (but his wife made up for him LOL!).3 points

Another side project. The only way to rechrome this used unit I found was to take it apart. Took a big chance I had no idea what was underneath the mirror. Small Spring and a screw which I had to retap new threads. Used a blue thread locker and then epoxied a new mirror. This is the driver's side which was really beat. I have a NOS for the passenger side.2 points

How is matt/flat vintage? These trucks were all shiny when they left the factory. They went from factory shiny to dull original colour and then kinda to rusty patina. Matt black was never in their history. For kinda the same money you can get a decent paint job and a nice looking truck that is a bit more colourful. Matt black is highly over-rated! Just my thoughts.2 points

You can see from the attached what is available. The first photo is the one that was on the car. Purchased about 15 years ago. USA made. The second is a NOS Mopar factory correct 947550. It is a little narrower than the one one the car as can be seen in the cap area. The third is "new" manufacture that you see on ebay. The NOS joint has a much smaller trunnion. What one can see is that the new manufacture joint is poorly done. The part that indexes into the yoke is a poor casting or forging. It was NOT milled after it was made. What I worry about is the shear load transferring to the bolts as opposed to being taken up by the yoke and block itself. I may just use three of them and then rebuild a second driveshaft over time and mill the blocks to sleeve them. That way I can get good fitting blocks. The other option I am considering is machining an adapter that would allow one to use a regular joint in the existing yokes. Are we having fun yet? By the way the NOS or NORS universals...some have cork grease seals like the one I just got. The cork is junk after 50 years. I need to get some o-rings for it. Also the stock joint does not have a grease fitting. zoom in and take a good look at the parting line. Ugly is it not? Anyone doing a driveshaft, I suggest you hang onto the "blocks" or wings as if I come up with a way to rebuild them, you may want to have them around. James1 point

I'm getting tired of my original carb. I have stripped holes and a worn throttle shaft. I have rebuilt it so many times over the last 20 years. My car has a split manifold with the heat riser welded and dual exhaust. I can't get the car to run great unless the choke is half closed. I want a new easy to adjust carb that I can change the jets and get the engine to run perfect. I'm looking at langdons carb but wondered if anyone found anything else that works well.1 point

Well, I bled the brakes today. The Motive 1102 adapter screwed right in and sealed up properly. Had no problems bleeding the brakes. As an aside, the fluid all came out pretty clean and just slightly browner than the new fluid I put into the system. With the rusty hope disc brake kit the brake pedal moves about 2 inches and goes firm. No road test yet, still have to finish the radiator fan install. Maybe I'll work on that tomorrow.1 point

Just as an added note, Jay Fishers mirrors did have his name, and or initials casted into the base, between the mounting studs. Why one would need to know this, I have no idea! Just a fun fact I suppose...1 point

I had to break the original mirror to get it out and see the mechanism. Friend with a glass business cut a new mirror for me.1 point

Swan necks are so hard to find and so rare ..do what ever you have to to have/own a nice pair of them... I figured that out in the late 70's. They are like owning real estate here in the Seattle area.1 point

When I rewired my 51 I wired the horn to be hot all the time. One day a flipped the driver's seat forward to put groceries in the back and the seat hit the horn button. I jumped. Those 6v horns are very loud when fed 12v, lol.1 point

That is gorgeous! Dont know how much of a purist you are, but you might consider putting Turn signal LEDs in it while the mirror is out.1 point

I can't stand lowered cars that's not how it should look. Its impractical if you change something it should make sense like updating front brakes to disc etc....1 point

I measured the location lengths carefully and the bearing does not contact the shaft seal face due to the radius. I don’t recall the distance between the seal and bearing but believe an 1/8” or so clearance depending the seal that you use. Recommend measuring the seal contact surface dia for size before seal installation to verify the combination is compatible. The seals I originally purchased were .020” o/s and would not have sealed anything.1 point

The bearings should all be packed with grease. Then the inner bearing goes into it’s mating bearing cup in the drum and the seal gets pressed into the the drum. Once the drum is in place the bearing will slide onto the spindle and press against the step where the seal rides. The bearing shouldn’t touch the seal once it is all installed.1 point

I took the ‘36 for a spin yesterday. Fired right up. Temps in the 60’s the last couple of days and I “summarized” the snow blower. We’ll see a few more cold days but the worst of winter is over. Of course, we just returned from Arizona so it wasn’t a bad winter at all.1 point

Oh yeah...the old "Ballard Oil" truck...for 15 years it was on top of two 40' foot containers down in a Buckley wrecking yard.. Bought it for $250.00 + $100.00 for delivery. A 1951 4 tonner with air and a 377. It always fires right up after sitting for six months and runs and drives ( got to prime the carbs of course). It's got patina...think that's what some call it. Last summer the left rear outer 10.00X 20 exploded? in the 108 degree? temperatures...scared the hell out of me....shook all the shop doors..sounded like two M80's! ....Plus the smell of rubber inner tube gas for 20 minutes. Can hardly wait to drive it around the property this summer...oh plus "Old Blue" too...a 2-3/4 tonner...had that running last summer too. And of course "Big Red"...and the 306ci. bus! Oh the love of the big Dodge trucks!1 point

looks correct to me. It is simply a relay for the horn and a junction point for the ignition circuit.1 point

I found I had to adjust the screws just right to get the horn to operate properly. As I recall, too tight and it wouldn't blow at all, too loose and it would blow all the time. After a few tries it seems to work fine. I couldn't find anything wrong with the wiring or connections. Tip while troubleshooting: pull the wire off the horns and hook it to a light bulb. Your neighbors will thank you1 point

Is it a Ball and Ball EV1? I have one for sale on ebay - rebuilt right now under: 1946,1947,1948 Chrysler. My handle is greycar56. I bought it for $85 10 years ago and rebuilt it with a NAPA Kit $63 recently. I have it listed at $120. Works with a Sisson Choke 6 Volt. Should be correct for 251 engines (250.6cu.in.). Tom1 point

Battery tender is on, priming bottle is filled. Will be cranking her over this afternoon, in anticipation of a ride tomorrow. Gotta change the garage over from winter storage mode to driving and work around spacing. Snow plow and snow blower will get run dry and go into the shed. Got doctors Apts Monday afternoon, maybe we will combine wellness checkup for Kate too.1 point

The Motive site is incoherence on this, lol. In one spot they say it's 1 1/8", in another they say it's 1 1/4". So I bought it and will report. Oddly enough when I went to buy it shipping times for the kit were several weeks out, but if I I bought the reservoir and adapter separate it not only shipped immediately, but the cost was less than the kit, lol. I have them in hand. If I like it I'll probably buy the adapter for the Cuda. I though about making my own but I cold not find a less expensive source for 1 1/4-18 UNEF plug or bolt that could be used.1 point

A big thank you to Brad aka bkahler for helping me get the ball rolling on getting reproduction vinyl decals made for the DeLuxe oil filter canisters. I'd also like to thank Rob aka Dodgeb4ya for helping me with some of the background information clarified with his parts books and expertise. Without their help, I would have only had some tracings, some part numbers, and just a general idea on how to get things done. THANKS GUYS !! ? Worth mentioning is billrigsby who made me look up the definitions of "honesty" and "integrity"1 point

My plans were to be there this year Tim but unfortunately my Mom passed away this last week and things are kinda crazy right now. We have services this weekend but I really don’t know what is going to be happening the next couple weeks. I REALLY need a break like this right now but gotta take care of business first so we’ll see what happens. If anything. Save me a dash plaque buddy, I’ll be there in spirit! Kev0 points
