I bought a larger screen auto darkening helmet online for around $40 that is adustable settings for darkness shades and a switch to put on grinder mode. That was the shipped price. Did several days on and off shopping and reading reviews before I ordered. Instructions were on the weak side but I have had a old auto lens in a old helmet for years but it gave up the ghost . Happy with it overall! without spending 2-300 $. DJ

Check a factory type repair manual as I know I have seen it there in my 49 or the 50 books I have. May be in the suspension area or in the lubrication specs area. I would find it and post but my printer copier scanned has gone to scrap pile. ? Could use a extra $2k from the gov. but we all end up paying for it later anyway. Time and and I will get it replaced eventually. DJ

Hey! There's no drain plug for the differential on my 48 DeSoto!
DJ194950 replied to MarcDeSoto's topic in P15-D24 Forum
How about just removing one of the third member bolts? If studs used then double nut and tighten nuts together and remove the stud to drain? Just a possibility? Hope you all had a safe and enjoyable Christmas! DJ -
Doing a top of line repairs/body/paints and materials have gone so far up since I started doing these things 45 years ago (even accounting for inflation) is astronomically higher. Way more so in the past 10 years or so!! Lots of reasons for this quality and long lasting are also way up-But?? Always had to do it myself as I never could afford pros but had studied body and paint at our local J.C. back after H.S. Always did some even part time trough the years for myself and friends. The day to days stress on the body and dusts of full time body work was more than I was willing to pursue. Back 40 years ago I painted a car with black paint then covered that with real pearl in the clear coats then more clear coats. -- The clear coat at the time from one of the top manufacturers had a nick name-- Clear Crack! which it did in a year or two if left in the sun. Was not cheap either! DJ

Those Used to be on Ebay a few years ago. A web search in years past came up with several choices out there. Worth the time to look? Cannot say now as I have not looked for about 5-6 years as I have bought one for my 50 Plymouth. Overpriced heavy cardboard but with seam sealers on the joints and several coats of rust proofing undercoating should be good for many years. ? ? DJ

Q. What model of heater do you have. Some (many) were dealer add on and the optional factory dealer installed-sold 3 different ones and the stock valve type varied with the model, from very basic to semi automatic whose heater water control valve is quite $$$. A picture or two under hood and under the dash would help. DJ

Pull and inspect closely the 52 gear set. Check gear lash and any noise in the bearings. I have had 3 different older Mopar rear gears sets that I sold 2 of them and all 3 were so good that No changes were made and installed. These gear sets if maintained well are great setups and will last almost forever. I have seen the Suburban in the past and the overall condition I suspect that it may be good enough to use as is.? A 3:73 may well be quite good , but if a little to tall a 3:9 should be great. I have the 3:9 in my 50 4 dr. with the BW OD and it pulls very well and the OD is a dream to use, cruises easily to about 80 which is way to fast for my car with good but stock brakes. The 3:9 ratio are much more common than the 3:73 so car guys swap is certainly possible. Certainly worth the try! BTW , my interchange manual says this exchange is good to go! The later models auto and truck changes can get quite complicated in the interchange book. DJ

On many materials used in auto interiors the installers had a special made steam machine to steam the cloth (and other materials) as used in most old cars to remove the last of the wrinkles. Years ago I did install a home made cloth headliner material and I used just the hottest water I could get and misted it on and then a hair dryer to dry it. Worked out very well! Actually got quite tight. How to make your own steamer cheaply? Someone who wants to become a engineer may be able to come up with a way? ? ? DJ

1949 dodge wayfarer automatic choke wire..
DJ194950 replied to Wayfarer311's topic in Technical Archives
May I add to the above response- Use heavy gage wire as the choke draws fairly heavy amps. Cannot say for sure as mine is wired to 12V. and draws 30Amp. ( as checked with new amp. gage inline) activated and needed a 10- 12Ga. wire to handle safely. I believed! Anyone else ever check a inline draw to choke on 6 Volt.? What is stock choke wire gauge per wiring diagrams? DJ -
Many paint hardeners contain isocyanate which can cause a lot of issues in the lungs but can get in body systems through eyes and shin exposures. If you watch auto shows were they show their painters at work you will see the pros all wearing all kinds of body suits, fresh air supplied masks etc. as they do this all the time, but some people can have severe reactions with just a small exposure. be safe, read labels and protect yourself! ? Must be someone in your metro area that still does repairs on generators. Sure there is many old car collectors and such in Lost Wages,(Las Vegas) N.V. which is close to you! Take it to one to look at it and test. Get a quote for repair/refurbishment. There are no New ones for sale only used/unknown operation and "repaired" online sales which is a also an unknown unless bought from the local shop and guaranteed. Most parts for these are still available and are not hard repairs for the experienced I would also take the gen. regulator with the gen. to a shop to have tested also. It takes two to tango and also the pair to make voltage on our cars. JMO, DJ

I think I would also get the "optional top for this a car if money is not a object! ? DJ

a few years ago we here in my town had a long time locksmith shop that I took a bag on Mopars locks for the Ign./doors and said try to make two door locks that matched and work and a ign. key that worked with an old Ign. switch I had bought and some door locks from EBay. After about a week I called and was told it was done and come get them. They charged $15 and then another $5 for a duplicate for both keys. $20 for all- Man was I ever happy!! Sadly they retired and closed up forever. DJ

Replacing input pinion shaft in a standard 3 speed?
DJ194950 replied to '41 Fat Bottom Girl's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Same with the 50 3 speed trannies and also the R-10 OD replacement units, so maybe on some? DJ -
That is why I only put a price on any E Bay sales at my minimum acceptable price to start. I seldom sale anything but when I need the $$. Seldom get more than asking/start price but still OK and I price mine below the crazy prices some ask, and buyer pays shipping per their location only. No handling type charges. Last time I did this three items all sold so no issues on my part and buyers seemed to be happy with the parts and prices as was myself. Most monies earned go to work on my 50 Ply. 4 dr. DJ

I bought a used flathead from a old forklift that had T- numbers and when I looked it up it turns out that # was built as both 218's and 230's from the factory. Used mostly in military apps. Probably not the original forklift motor either! So to know, it was I could either measure stroke or check the crank casting # that Is what I did and it showed it was a 230 ci. motor at least as bought. As built?? Never will know. Both as original CI motors can easily be either. No changes in the blocks/ heads at all. The truck motors as far as I know used the same parts -rods/etc. as the cars. Cams? Has been asked here many times and no for sure answers. DJ

He might be a few years to young to even know what you are asking, heck it is Almost before my time and I am 70 YO! ? DJ

Mine would be a collection of 33 or 34 Plymouths- A pickup with a 340 4spd. or 727 or automatic with overdrive gear OK. A two door sedan same equip. A 2 door coupe, same At least one of the above with the "sleeper" style & color/s. Stock motors with upgrades on motor would be acceptable substitutes. Dodges are great also but prefer the front sheet metal & grilles of the Plymouths even more. DJ

51 B3B build thread - after all these years
DJ194950 replied to bkahler's topic in Mopar Flathead Truck Forum
That is the best thing about the Unity brand is that they are still building them and at least almost if not all the parts including several of the factory name plates to go on them so the Mopar brand tag is avail. for their spots and running/fog lights! DJ -
Did you sand the drums and shoes with some medium to course sandpaper when installed. Always a part of my repairs. Only once on a old Datsun 280 Z did I have front brake squeaks. Talked to the dealer parts about this and said the replacement pads where too hard for the car and to get factory replacements which I did and sanded the rotors again and installed, no more squeak! By the way they did not cost more than the aftermarket parts either! Maybe yours are also too hard of a material on the shoes?? DJ
