Road trip spare parts list

Hey all

I'm getting ready for a 5 day road trip in my 47 d24 and I'm curious what sort of spare parts you think I should carry? I don't want to go nuts but I think it's be a good idea to have a few things just in case.

Plugs

Points

Condenser 

Cap

Fan belt

Gas can

Jump pack w/compressor 

Engine oil

Zip ties and duct tape of course 

Starter solenoid?

Gen brushes?

Starter brushes?

Voltage regulator?

Others I'm not thinking of?

 

All the following are new with about 1000 miles on them - Hoses, wheel cylinders, wheel bearings, brake flex hoses, tires, plug wires.

A fuse for the headlight switch and a spare taillight/brake bulb in case the local auto parts store can't find a 6v bulb.

 

Oh...the most important item......a AAA card with towing options., that's your "get out of jail free" card!

You forgot your tool box, socket set, open end wrenches, jug of water for radiator. Check the air pressure in all tires and especially the spare, good battery flashlite. scissor jack. Bare wire incase you have to tie up a part and also some extra electrical wire. Get a long piece of 14/12 gage withe with alligator clips so you have a jump wire.

 

call your car insurance company to let them know you will be on a road trip. Your regular car ins might also have some extra towing that will include your antique car towing ins.

I have logged 10,000 miles since putting my 52 Cranbrook on the road 3 yrs. ago. Two times stranded due to no spark concern. First time was due to the small screw on the points backing out, second time( a year later), the small wire within the dist. shorted to ground. The best defense is preventative maintenance although I carry a small well equipped tool box in the trunk. Coil, pts., cond., wire w/ alligator clips ,electrical tape, hose clamps, flashlite, assortment of tools.

Don't have AAA but my car insurance includes towing.  And there is a tool kit in the trunk with spare distributer parts.

That is all I do as well, but I also have not taken it on a 5 day trip.  Now I guess it really depends on the miles traveled, because I can put a 3 thousand miles on in 5 days easy.

I need to check my policy but quite sure it doesn't include 200 miles of towing like my AAA membership.

Generally our long trips involve a few cars so we divvy up the extra parts so we don't end up with 4 generators and no distributors or fan belts.  We all carry a small tool set with enough tools to fix the normal stuff on the road along with a couple of quarts of oil and coolant solution. I bring our 12 volt charge pack for power for the GPS and can do an emergency jump start if needed. Special tools are assigned among the group. My special tool is a small floor jack and wood blocks to make changing a tire easier. Another brings a small empty gas can (just in case) and someone will bring a small air compressor. So far the only thing we have not been able to fix on a trip is a noisy transmission.

I think the loop is between 800 and 1000 miles so not too bad spread over 5 days.

I've got a few spare bulbs but I didn't realize there was a fuse on the headlight switch. I'll add this to my list!

I do carry a pretty extensive tool kit (it's actually 2 medium boxes with of assorted hand tools). It includes jumper wires but not tie wire, I'll add a spool of that to the kit.

I use Hagerty for insurance on the old cars so I make sure the Drivers Club is paid up and the app is loaded, that includes 100 miles on a flat bed as well as a 6v jump, fuel and flat repair.

I include a points file in my tool box but I hadn't thought about a short inside the distributor, I think I replaced that wire during the rebuild but I don't recall to be honest (old age). Maybe a little shrink wrap and lighter would be a good idea.

It's been a long time but way back we used to maintain a list of city state and phone and available tools that you could request before a trip

Beer?.... or maybe not!.... But if you broke down on the highway..... well maybe not just in case you get her going again. But then when you have reached your destination and you're all worn out...

I find it better to be prepared for any possibility so a loaded cooler is near the top of the list.

Reminder probably not needed for most of us, but cell phone and charger are necessary facilitators for the towing, credit cards and insurance contacts.

 

I have a little snapon box originally sold as a container for small socket sets.  It's only maybe 6w, 12L and maybe an inch tall.  But it will hold a ratchet, 3/8 to 3/4 socket set, a couple of small screwdrivers, pliers, probe type circuit tester.  Fits most anywhere.  If that doesn't get me going, the cell phone will!

A very strong list. You probably already have them stashed somewhere, but some shop rags and/or paper towels. And: more than twice I needed to MacGyver something and wished I had a piece of aluminum foil. (Once used a piece wrapped around a leaking float; good enough to get me home.)  I've also been saved by a tube a Krazy Glue!

I carry a spare distributer, fuel pump, fan belt, head gasket and torque wrench.  Because I have a different style rear universal joint, an extra one is also in the kit.  Some mechanics wire is also a good thing to tuck in along with a spool of 12 gauge insulated wire.
