JohnS48plm Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 My first car was a 1965 Dodge Coronet 440 station wagon. It was a dark red color, my dad had bought it new in 65. I saved my money from my job at an ice cream store and put chrome reverse wheels on it that I bought for $15 each at Sears. Then I raised the rear with helper springs and put a single glasspack on the 318. I wish I had a picture of it to post. JohnS Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 My first car, in 1959, was a 47 Chevy Fleetline two door fastback with vacuum shift. It was bought by my grandfather, who said he had gotten Dad a car at 16 so he would get me one too. Found the Chev on the back row at the local Mercury dealer for $115. Tried to drag one or two friends in high school, but that vacuum shift wouldn't shift quickly. One day I drove that Chevy to Springfield, MO from my home town of Aurora.....about 35 miles......and on the way back it chewed a couple teeth off the timing gear. So, I'm sitting on the shoulder wondering how I can afford a tow truck.....when along comes a fellow 3 or 4 years older than me (from my town) in his 52 Olds. He said "I'll push you home". So he began pushing me and we actually made the trip of about 25 miles with no real problems. The Chevy would ride up on his bumper and start to move a little sideways......so when he saw that happening, he simply let off til mine straightened out, and then gently got back on my bumper. Kind of a white knuckle ride for me...but we made it. It was a two lane road all the way.....I don't think we actually held up traffic as he had us going pretty good. Eventually had the timing gear replaced. Next car after that was an oxidized pink and white 54 Belvedere in my second year of college. Was kinda worn out and used it's share of oil, but got me around for a year or better. That's the only car I ever let Dad pick out for me sight unseen. He just didn't realize how bad it really was. I'm enjoying hearing about everyone's first cars.....keep it going. Quote
james curl Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 My first car was a 4 door dark blue 34 Plymouth that I drove until it lost a rod, then a Model A roadster. Quote
claybill Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 my DAD had a used car lot for FORD MOTORS. back in the 50's. when i turned 16 i had my pick one day....between a 39 packard cvt or a 40 ford cv't. I wanted the packard, but dad wanted me to have the ford.! by the way...the packard was a beater, pink and black and a little rough.! the ford was red with a straight pipe and no heater. but not bad. both were $100 or $150. i took the ford.! THROUGH THE YEARS dad always picked out the cherry cars for me. twice i sold them or traded off for 'hotter' stuff.! he never said a WORD.! I WISH I WAS AS CLASSY AS HE WAS. bill Quote

Dan Hiebert Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 A 1966 Ford Fairlane station wagon, plain-Jane but solid car. Bought it for $650 in 1979. I'd probably still have it if it weren't for a cowdestrian wandering dark south Texas roads one night. Quote
MacGyver Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 My first was a 1984 AMC Eagle wagon. Believe it or not, I miss that car and would actually love one for a daily driver today. (the only ad the link had was for a 1980 but not much changed ) Quote

Furylee2 Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 60 Corsair. Dad came out of the bank and it was in the parking lot with a for sale sign. Seems the owner borrowed money to have the engine gone thru, and couldn't pay it back. $300 and it ran like a top! It took a while to get there, but I could out run most 6 cylinder’s in town. Quote
pflaming Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 I bought the Ford for $45 in 1956. The Plymouth was my 2nd car. My dad bought it for $200. He found it in So. MN. The rocker panels were rusted out but it was a good car. Drove it to Ca and back in 1958. I'd like to have either one today. Quote
52b3b Joe Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 1965 Corvair Corsa 140hp 4spd (more like 220hp or so after engine work). Quick, fun car. Ate up many V8s, but I had to sell it a couple years ago to help pay for school. I will restore another one to be identical one day. Quote

greg g Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 52 Plymouth Cranbrook, then a Simca Aronde (had it for about 3 weeks) got a Hillman super minx, then a 54 Dodge Pace car replica, then a 60 Dodge, had part ownership of a 62 Savoy Super Stock car for a summer. Then bought a 63 Fairlane, traded that for a 66 Mustand 2+2. bought the 46 Business coupe in 70. That takes us from 65-71, Then things got nuts with furrin cars like triumphs, Volvos, bmws, saabs, Mazdas and others. Never had a VW beetle, or a corvette, or anything that could be considered a luxury car. Quote

maurice wade Posted September 15, 2012 Report Posted September 15, 2012 Mine was a 48 Plymouth special delux cp. 45 years later, I have the exact same car, same color, same smell. Quote
daddyo23 Posted September 15, 2012 Report Posted September 15, 2012 mine was a 1956 Buick Special. Paid $75 for it. Had alot of fun with that car until the power steering went out. Made it a little harder to get around in parking lots. Quote
plymouthcranbrook Posted September 15, 2012 Report Posted September 15, 2012 A 1954 Plymouth Savoy that my Father and most likely many other people had completely given up on. About every 6 months I had to drop the pan and change #5 rod bearing. Drove it for two years in High School and sent it to the junk yard when the clutch went out Quote
4852dodge Posted September 16, 2012 Report Posted September 16, 2012 My first car was a 54 DeSoto Powermaster. 4 drs, flathead and a powerflite trans. After a couple years I swapped in a 340 with a 747 and 8 3/4 rear from a 71 Cuda. Lots of fun to drive around, she looked and sounded factory but ran better. Quote
