I don't look at porn and I clear my browsing history and cookies every time I shut my computer down.  I have been told that when accepting banner ads, the site administrators can list the types of ads they will accept.

Well, you seem to know more about this stuff than I do,so I will just leave it alone.

I do thank yorsou for the info, though.

BTW,I STILL haven't seen any porn photos here.

Or anywhere else that I can remember.es

I DO visit a political site several times a day,and never remember seeing a porn photo there either, but the administrators of political sites see a LOT of arguements, disagreements, names called, and sometimes even threats,so they tend to have monitors that keep a close eye on any subject, and will nuke anything offensive or illegal in an instant.

Not much conflict in sites like this,so there is no real need for a bunch of admin types to be constantly monitoring what is posted.

I would almost bet that if you started posting obscenities towards another poster here, neither the post or you would last long.

Some of us moderators come here daily to simply read the posts and hope there is nothing that actually requires moderation.

We do miss some things when first posted but there are members who flag suspect posts for us, usually very soon after they were posted, so usually we can take action fairly quickly. And yor are right, posts won't last long if they violate the rules.

Right now I have banners for

Large HD monitors from a company called connections

Celtic jewelry

Women's underwear and foundations. By EVO

Headphones by Focal

Electronic connectors by Sweatwater.

None of which I have searched for in the last 48 hours

I did just do a search  for rechargeable hearing aids, and earlier inthe day what the proper atf fluid is for my 07 Mitsubishi .

No ads for either of them yet.

That looks to be a Sears Suburban. A friend has two of those in real nice original shape.

I want to see those kind of ads!

I haven't seen a single ad here.  Guess I didn't realize how good of a job the computer and software are doing to prevent the ads.

Sorry for the long post but this was an interesting conversation I had after my original post. I spoke to an acquaintance who makes a living with search engine optimization about this. Ads on forums like this do come primarily from Google searches and Facebook key word searches. First and foremost he said that the people running the forum and made the arrangements for selling ad space should be able to limit the types of ads shown and more specifically, be able to block certain types of ads. He said that targeted ads displayed are based on search engine search history, and key word and key phrase searches from Facebook and other social media sites. The social media searches look for the word or phrase and not the context. As an example he said that if you post on FB a comment about naked trees after the leaves fall off, the word naked will be part of your profile sold to advertisers.  In addition, FB will associate your name with things posted by friends with common interests. The example he used here was if you have a friend with whom you have common interests with you  and you comment on their common interest posts. If that person also posts a lot of pictures of large busted women, FB will associate you with those photos and that, too, becomes part of your profile sold to advertisers. He said that Google and Yahoo work to consider context in the lists sold to advertisers, Facebook only wants to sell the results of the searches independent of context. Bottom line is he said the pay per click ad business is all based on who they think you are and it is extremely difficult to change that profile when it is wrong.  Interesting thing to know.

Good post! First I have selected ad "types" that should be of interest to this specific audience. However as your post noted those will be over-ridden based on the way FB and Google Adsense works.

Not just what you search for. . . This site, like many others, has installed Google analytics to give the webmaster some visibility into how people get to the site, where they poke around in the site, and what sites they go to when they leave. So Google can track you around the web even if you never do a web search. When tracking you around they see what types of sites you visit and what pages you spend more time on and can build a profile for serving targeted ads.

Google isn’t the only one that does this. Facebook is another big one and there are a bunch you probably have never heard of. It takes some work on your part to figure out how to block that type of tracking without actually breaking the websites you want to look at.

In my case, I have put some open source firmware in my router that blocks many of the common ad servers and trackers. So I seldom see ads and can’t recall seeing an ad that looks like it was targeted to me in years. This works for all devices on my home network. And pretty much anything Facebook is outright blocked. But I am a retired embedded software engineer and have a bag of tricks that most people don’t.

@Sniper mentioned using an ad blocker add on to Firefox. That will help a lot. And I understand that the newer versions of Safari from Apple on both the Mac and iOS are starting to put in tracker blockers. In my case, ads don‘t get through at all so I don’t know how good the Firefox add ons are nor how good the Apple anti-tracking is.

I do find it interesting how it the artificial intelligence works and what it comes up with. I've had times when I came on and there were no ads; yesterday it was one for Rockler woodworking tools. I've bought a gift certificate from them in the past, at Christmas time, but nothing else. I recently purchased some items from All American Clothing and they're popping up here and on YouTube. Tonight? A local heating oil company and a local company that rents construction equipment. Not sure where either of those came from.

On Sunday nights I listen to a radio show online from Michigan. Most of the ads are from Grand Rapids but every once in a while one will sneak in from my area here in MD, which has me doing a double take.
