So today after 8 months of employment at the company I was working at, I get let go with two other people, one of them my direct reports. No real reason given except "going a different direction". I probably interviewed my replacement about a month ago. All I can say is the owners of that company need to really look at themselves for what they're doing to a bunch of people that gave their heart and soul to that place. There's a special place in hell for people like that. Especially when I asked as recently as Monday if I was doing okay and I was told I was doing a great job.

So now what?

Sorry to hear. Not sure what is with people like that. Lacking in humanity would be one likely cause. Egocentric would be another. I don't personally believe in an afterlife but if I am wrong, I hope they go where you suggested.

Sad to hear it Bud. Hope you end up at one of their competitors and run them out of business!

Being in a position like that before. can honestly say. When one door closes, another opens.

And if I had not been released of my current responsibilities, I never would have had the opportunity to accept the better job waiting for me.

I know it hurts, but trust with your experience, you will fit nicely in a better position.

I have been through this more than once. First time I saw it coming and had a new job lined up in advance and was actually glad it happened. Next time thanks to this forum I found a terrific job that carried me to retirement.

I know of a place that let go quite a few people and I mean good workers, most had lots of experience. I heard later a friend told me someone in upper mgmt. said turn over is good for a company. Well I hope so 'cause that company has had a hard time hiring replacements.  I heard they hired 10,  2 months ago and none stayed. Not many in  the younger generation have a good work ethic or  will even work much at all. I work with several ( they hit the clock anyway) that can't be left unsupervised, will not put any tool or unused product back when finished or wont stay off of facebook long enough to finish a task. Companies have been wanting to do more with less over the last 10yrs, they're fixing to have to hire more and expect less in the coming years.  I hope you find something that pays more and you like better. Sometimes we wont move till pushed, stop have a cold beverage, dust off your frustration and turn it into motivation. Jobs are out there, just gotta go get one. You may have to get one for the time being to tie you over till one that more suits you shows up. Good luck, I wish ya well!

I went thru 4 layoffs in a 5 year period, with the last corporate workforce reduction coming 10 days after the company VP of operations visited my office (a rarity) to tell me that he planned on giving me a promotion with a hefty raise...each one was a punch in the gut that came with no warning as I was involved in several big projects... plans were put on hold indefinitely, relationships were strained, family and friends openly questioned my abilities and competencies...NOT FUN...heck today I get told to visit HR late in the afternoon, and I thought I it was gonna happen all over again and dreaded the trip down that long hallway; turns out they only wanted me to fill out some health insurance form...I have heard periodically from former coworkers about how difficult it has been in finding competent engineers to take my place on technical projects...a couple places have really gone downhill since my involuntary separations, which has kinda brought a small grin to my face knowing that the management that gave me the boot has had to deal with the lack of experience and strong work ethic available.  The silver lining to this cloud is that I knew I did my best at each job and everything that I have done since, so I can hold my head high knowing that.  I can tell you that the worst time of the year to get cut loose in manufacturing or construction is after October, as companies involved typically opt to do any hiring after New Year's Day...it's even worse in an election year, and the absolute worst is to be unemployed going into an election year.  So the good news is that ya might have some good options available for the next 90 days...who knows, ya might have something pop up after Labor Day so you can spend the next 6 weeks being your own boss and catch up on chores and whatnot, that's what I end up doing, keeping my days full.  Good luck in your search for a new path...who knows what the tide may bring B)

keep your chin up, mark.  and don't spend much time paying attention to your former employer; it's a waste of time and provides nothing useful to you.  move on to something better.

Happened to me back in January. I had been looking for something new and had a few offers. Even one to move back to Baltimore. Passed on all them. Th an a guy builds a motor and screws up. Since it was the biggest customer the company has, they wanted a head. I offered up mine. Since I couldn't pull the trigger to quit, might as well let them force me. Got unemployment and everything. As soon as I let out I was available offers poured in with 13 and 14 bucks an hour more. Went out and celebrated the night I got fired. Been 6 months at the new job got 2 raises already almost 20 bucks an hour more than I made at the dealership..sometimes getting fired is the best thing that can happen.

I also got let go from my part time job. I retired 17 yrs. ago after putting in 31 yrs. with Dana Corp. Then went to work part time and was there for 17 yrs. Thought I would be there till I died. Was told it was nothing I had done or anything personal just that it was done due to cost cutting. I understand cost cutting and having a slow time, but being a union guy for 31 yrs. with the UAW, I thought seniority meant something,...........it doesn't.  I think the higher ups have plans to move the company out of our area and if that's the plan, then everyone is gone. They also know if they would need me back and stay local, I would go back. For now I am collecting unemployment because I paid in and haven't had a claim for 37 yrs, so I deserve it. If something comes up after that I may go back to work, if not I'll just stay retired.

@ggdad1951 I'm sure it'll all work out. In 46 years of continuous employment I've never been laid off or fired. With the exception of a couple of years early on I was self-employed until about 10 years ago when circumstances forced me to go in another direction. I'm on my second job since then and hope to be able to put up with it for another couple of years. For me working for someone else simply isn't enjoyable. My long-suffering wife says I'm the image of Charlie Daniels' "Long-h;)y."

Update: after a summer of woodworking to pay for the wedding, various small home improvements and what have you....I have landed at Cummins as a Technical Specialist for 10l -24l diesel gensets.  I start Nov 6th, s pay cut but it I think in the long run a good place to land.   Done with being a big wheel on a small truck...I'll gladly be a large cog on a wheel on a HUGE truck.
