Recently this has been popping up and interfering with my Forum sessions.  It gives this address: http://mplayer5888.info/flashplayer/install/ which does NOT look like a bona fide Adobe site.  I chose NOT to do this as it will result in downloading an installing an executable from an unknown source.  Instead I went to Adobe's site and downloaded their latest version which is 11.7.700.200. The message below is still popping up but I'm not going there.

The pop ups on this site just beg you to download imediately NOW!  I wish I didn't have to see any of them Do people really read and trust them?

I despise them. All useless advertising.

I've got Firefox configured to block pop ups, Ghostery installed to block the tracking code, etc. Between all that and viewing this site using either a Mac or Linux, I don't see those popups.

It's been on my screen now for some time. I click on NOTHING that is even remotely foreign to me. I can tolerate banner ads but when an ad pops on my working screen, to me it's an evasion of my privacy.

this advertising is what is helping defray the cost of the forum..to some extent  it is a necessary evil or else the forum will become paid membership to NOT SEE this stuff...however..as most folks here probably agree....there should never be a pop up on a mouse rollover or should any pop up execute if you try to close it by means of the top right close out X...to that end, I can tolerate the ads that support the forum.  I am not that curious by nature I will ever solicit their ads....I am of the old school type that if I am not looking for it..you cannot entice me...I will actively seek whatever p[product that I need at the time I need it...

Got it once yesterday and my security system issued a severe threat warning immediatley after.

I have gotten that message also. I close the browser and then immediately do a restart. I have gotten the FBI ransome virus twice by clicking on the close button of popups similar to these. one was a facsimile of net flix which was imbeded in out local newspapers site, and the other jumped up to tell me my e signature verification something or other was no longer valid. So now you gotta watch what you even just randomly click the off/close button on. The Rat Ba$+ards are getting really cute with their intrusions. I have been running windows essentials and it did ot stop them.

Let me try to clarify your concerns about ads.

Currently their are three types running:

1. Direct sold ads like Butch's Cool Stuff. They link back directly to the advertiser's web site. I sell them directly to the advertiser and have full control on what content is displayed.

2. Ads through bidvertiser.com. They are an advertising service and contract with advertisers directly for banner ad content. They are responsible for the ad content. as such they have strict terms of service regarding the safety of the ads being delivered and if any are a virus they are immediately terminated and the advertiser loses his fees. They test and verify ads for safety before running them on their service. Bidvertiser.com is one of the larger ad service providers and it is to their own best interest they delivery only safe ads. If your virus software reports something suspicious put a ticket in through the Help -> Website Support link and I will forward to bidvertiser for investigation. To date every ad reported has been a false positive and safe. It is bidvertiser.com business model to deliver ad services and they have a vested interest in making sure the product delivered is safe and virus free.  Their ads can be identified with the small Bidvertiser Ads link in the lower right hand corner.

3.Viglink scans content when it is displayed and builds links to advertisers it has as clients. These links then go to the advertiser's site. They can easily be identified with a mouse over and "Link added by VIsLink" will appear. If you define a link in your posts is will not be overwritten my Vislink. You can opt out of seeing the Vislink links if desired. Instructions are at Help -> Site Help Topics

I understand your concerns about the ads and have chosen to work with only legitimate and established ad service providers. They have been very responsive when issues were raised about an individual ad and want to deliver a safe product to web site publishers. Virus software can report a false positive so if you get a warning don't ignore it and report the ad for follow up. For ad issues I usually have a response within 24 hours.  Google Adsense is the largest provider in the ad services marketplace and I have been trying to get accepted on that service to replace bidvertiser but to date have not been able to gain approval for the site.

As an action item I will see if I can offer an subscription option that will limit the bidvertiser.com and VigLinks ads since I can't control or directly verify the content.

I use the free AVAST anti virus software and it is good about alerting me to infected pages. The suspect ad that sparked this thread I dont believe is virus infected as it passed my AVAST scan twice with no alert. The only time I got an alert from streaming this webpage was from an outside link that was posted by a forum participant.

The suspect ad is an annoyance. It suddenly without any action on my part takes over the screen. When that first happened I closed my browser and then had to re-open it. That experiance taught me to simply use the back button to back out of the unwanted page.

I think some of the ads are set up with a mouse roll over activation instead of a click. They are really annoying and generate erroneous click counts, the last thing the ad service wants.  As I identify specific ads that exhibit that behavior I report them to get them pulled out of the ad rotation.

When I see comments like "they just won access to all the info needed to empty your pockets" that neither accurate or helpful and needs to be addressed.  Many of the bidvertiser advertisers are national companies that you see advertised everyday.  Making sure visits by members is a safe computing experience is a priority!  Anyone who sees something suspect should report it through Help > Website Support link immediately.

I look forward to when you can direct sell to advertisers who are Car/Truck appropriate.

        (ie pepboys/autozone/dodge/chrysler/landons/stovebolt/etc..)

The bulk ads from BidV are an eye sore.......thou they do get good reviews by bloggers and websites as better than adsense.

You have my understanding and support GTK (aka P15-D24)...!

You've been dealing with the new site shakedown with all of us looking right over your shoulder.

Way to keep it together man. ^_^

Me too as it pays the bills a lot faster than the incremental revenue from Viglink and BidV.

I would love it I could get enough direct sold ads to kill BidV. (I consider it a temporary necessary annoyance)

I've made my living for the past 35 plus years in tech sales so I guess I better get busy! :D
