Merle Coggins Posted May 4, 2013 Report Posted May 4, 2013 (edited) So, here's my latest hairbrained scheme. If Tim would be willing to store my truck for a month or two I would plan the 2 seperate weeks idea. First week: Depart Waukesha the Saturday before the BBQ. That would give me a 7 day window to arrive the Friday before. Then party hardy at the BBQ and con someone into taking me to the airport either Sunday, or take a 6th vacation day to fly home on Monday. That would allow for a day of rest and relaxation. I'll keep playing with route options based on what I already have, and any input I continue to gather. Right now it's a 6 day trip, but could be stretched to 7 easy enough. Second week: Either the week leading up to Memorial Day, or an extended weekend before and the week after Memorial Day. This would give me 10 days to work with and only use 5 vacation days. Day 1. Fly out to Sacramento and have someone pick me up and take me down to Tim's place. Day 2. Head up the coast to around Eureka Day 3. Continue up the coast to the Portland,OR area for a visit with my friends Keven and Byronb3b. Day 4. Motor on up through Washington and Idaho. Maybe I can work a stop by Bud and/or Pete (blueskies). Day 5. Head northeast into Montana to around Great Falls. Day 6 option #1. Head up to Hwy2 and roll across northern Montana into N. Dakota. The only problem with this is that a day's travel would put me in the Williston area, and I know from my travels out there last summer that available lodging is very limited in that area. Maybe I'd have better luck in Minot, but that makes the day a bit long. Day 7 option #1. Continue accross ND and on to Aitkin, MN to see some of my cousins. Day 8 option #1, Drop down through the Twin Cities for lunch with my friends Ed, Mark, et al, then hammer I-94 home. Days 9 & 10 option #1. Unpack and relax. OR; Day 6 option #2. Head up to Lethbridge, AB (I know there's a forum member there but the name escapes me at the moment) then over towards Moose Jaw, SK. Day 7 option #2. Head over to Winnipeg to meet up with Fred. Day 8 option #2. Drop down into Fargo, then across to Aitkin, MN. Day 9 option #2. Same as Day 8 in option #1 above. Day 10 option #2. Unpack and relax Edited May 4, 2013 by Merle Coggins Quote

buds truck Posted May 4, 2013 Report Posted May 4, 2013 Merle, I have a guest room with your name on it and if you stop by, I promise to make some of my infamous bbq'd babyback ribs. Quote

Jim Shepard Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 I've done this exercise a couple of times for driving as much of old Route 66 as still exsists. One thing that really helps is looking at it with "Google Earth". Some of the detail is rally amazing and folks have posted a bunch of photos along the route so you can get a good feel for what the road/terrain looks like. It's like flying over the route in a hot air balloon. Quote
John-T-53 Posted May 5, 2013 Report Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) This sounds like a really cool trip and hope to do too someday soon. My Grandpa drove to California from Delano, Minnesota in the early '30's in a Model T. I think he said it took them about a couple weeks - top speed something like 30 mph. Many dirt roads. He told that story many times, and I'll never forget it. We're fortunate to have all this land, free to explore, and full of sights, where making a trip across it will always be legendary. MarkAubuchon Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Do it! I have driven my 47 to Portland 5800 miles, and then to Vermont 3200. I am also of the mindset that 300 is about all I could handle. 400 and 500 mike days just too much! I am planning another long run for St Louis to next summers Plymouth meet in Michigan, up the UP over to Wisconsin and then back. Quote

People like you are the ones that keep me with my little 1,300 mile round trip to Portland or 2100 mile round trip to Tucson from getting the long distance award. Guess I'll have to wait until I retire and have more time and can drive to events in New England to be competitive . . . Just don't have the time to take 8 days each way at the 300 mile/day average to get from here to Detroit and back. I agree on 300/day. . . Did 500 and 400 coming back from Tucson and that was too much like work, better to have time for sightseeing and taking the back roads. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) that is easy Ed..first dirve to Georgia..pick me up and you will be able to beat almost any straight liner in distance..PROBLEM SOLVED Edited May 10, 2013 by Plymouthy Adams Quote

HAHA I was just messing with you I really don't know what Tims rules are for long distance. The plymouth club its for those who drove their old cars typically. Quote
TodFitch Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Long distance award only counts for those driving old iron...... If I recall correctly, the long distance recognition at the Tucson meet went to a fellow with a '60s car. Definitely new enough to have AC and maybe new enough to have cruise control. Seems like there ought to be a split and separate recognition for those driving cars old enough to lack those amenities that make long distance driving much easier. that is easy Ed..first dirve to Georgia..pick me up and you will be able to beat almost any straight liner in distance..PROBLEM SOLVED Except for the problem of needing more travel/vacation days than the boss will give you off work. . . pflaming Posted May 10, 2013 Report Posted May 10, 2013 Ed, line up a dozen yards along the way, pick each one then sell the parts at the BBQ to pay for the trip! Quote

If Target were to lock the doors tomorrow would you still get paid for your vacation? And if you do would the rate be at your current wage or at the wage you were making at the time the vacation was accumulated? Quote
