I’m noticing it’s getting harder to find replacement oil filters for our flatheads. Advance auto can no longer get them and rock auto only has the wix 51070 available. If you have a source for filters I recommend getting a few extras.

My local Auto Value  parts store still has Wix 51080 available, which has paper material on each end, I have a note to use the Fram rubber ends on the Wix filter. I sourced a Purolater P40 oil canister from a pick a part yard from a Cranbrook, found a vintage P40 filter on ebay and a Wix 51201 equivalent at my local store.

Ay time now a self proclaimed parts Pro will have a simple solution to oil filters. I am confident there is supplier who works for 5 cents an hour just waiting to lower the quality,  and get the dimensions wrong.

Rock auto still shows the 51010 that I've been using. What filter can't you find

I can still find them. The amount of places that sells them is shrinking. I used to find them at most auto parts stores and by several manufacturers. That’s changing in my area.

I bought my last few off eBay, a couple 60s/70s stock from Wix and a fairly new Car Quest, all at decent prices.

One point not memtioned: There are at least a couple different filter sizes. Some are still easy to get. Others seems to be drying up.

I just ordered 3 Wixx 51010 filters for my 39 Desoto from Amazon and the cost was $10.55 each and I got free shipping. I regulary use the NAPA 1010 Gold and the Wixx51010 is the same dropin filter canister.  NAPA charge around 16-18 dollars for each filter element.

Also just ordered the Castrol GTX Classic 5 quart container from Amazon for 21.99 and this has the higher ZDDP PPM than the rest of the oils. ALso delivered for free.  Seems as if WalMart is out of stock for right now.

Castrol GTX Classic

If meets API SJ classification.  What that means for Zinc or Phosphorus I do not know and claiming higher levels of those means nothing without the values.

Wow took some digging but according to Hemmings

API Phos    Zinc     Boron

SJ  1301    1280     151

Those are limits, not minimums.  But yeah, fine for our stuff.

Sniper: i had done a posting on the Castrol GTX classic and their Technician staff had sent me literature on the PPM for the Phos, Zinc and Boron.

I just got two 5 qt containers the other day from Amazon for around $22. For some reason Walmart is showing they do not have any in stock and can not get it shipped.

I gave up finding a filter that fit and had the correct gasket, and parts haven’t been eliminated or changed, on the many aftermarket bypass filters. I use a Wix 24755 bypass filter housing, that uses a spin-on filter, on a couple of my cars. I’m confident that the oil is being filtered and I don’t have to clean a canister.  Rick D.

To bring this thread back to the top to ID an alternative.  The short version - I can't get the Castrol GTX Classic up here from a brick-and-mortar store.  Valvoline VR1 has the same properties, both are touted as racing oils, and I can get the Valvoline locally.  (It doesn't hurt that I've always preferred Valvoline products.)  I'd wager one doesn't work any better than the other, but the rub may be availability in some places.  I'll order on-line if I have to, but I prefer buying locally.

Dan I have also found the same thing down here in PA. Walmart is out of stock but Amazon has it in stock. My daughter has Amazon Prime so I got free shipping on the Castrol GTX Classic.  Yes if you can not get it at a brick and motor store but you can get the Valvoline instead that is also fine, so why pay for postage and mail delivery vs getting when you need it instead.  I was just trying to provide an FYI about the oil and its availability.

Walmart also no longer stocks the Castrol Extended performance oil for my daily drivers, was able to order and have it shipped to the house for no shipping fee.
