In a few weeks my car (1941 Chrysler Royal) will come out of storage and be readied for the road. I expect it will be a good idea to change the oil filter as part of that. Reading up, I am told the prewar long-block sixes used a bypass oil filter, and the postwar ones used a full-flow filter. Trying to identify the right thing to order for my car, since it will likely have to be ordered from somewhere.

Andy Bernbaum lists one filter element (https://www.oldmoparts.com/parts/l_engine/oil-filter/) for all Chrysler six and V-8 engines from 1933-57 (presumably bypass or full-flow)...is that correct?

Otherwise doing a search here I've come across numerous different part numbers from Wix, NAPA, and other suppliers. (NAPA 1010 Gold, Wix 51070, 51080,  etc) from people with different models/years.

I'm confused...not sure if these are all equivalent or there may be different sizes depending on filter cannister.

Engine of my car with oil filter cannister is in this pic...I suspect but have no way of knowing for sure if that's factory original, the car has 34,000 miles on it.

The aftermarket made a lot of add on filter housings, which can only complicate the issue.

Wix has a handy lookup page that will allow you to look up filters by dimension.  Might want to measure yours and see if any of those numbers is close to what you have and if not what Wix has that will be.

the napa1010 will work just fine inthe canister that you are showing. This filter is a bypass and the insert fits over the tube inside the canister and the oil just flows throught the filter element.  Andy B's want approx $16 for a filter plus shipping of around $16.  You can almost buy two NAPA 1010 filter for the cost of the filter plus shipping from Andy B;s

I by mine from Napa nd save on shipping.  Get two to have any extra.

I use the 1010 gold in my 39 desoto for the past 35 years.

When you take off the lid use a turkey baster to remove the oil in the bottom of the canister, clean  it out with a clean rag. Might have to make a new lid gasket but that is easy to do. Make sure the nut on the lid is nice and tight because with the oil coming into the top of the canister is might leak out. Know that from experience.

Good advice already!  I find that linked ad to be very misleading and incomplete too.  There are certainly two factory filter systems for some of those engines and years, full flow and bypass so it cannot possibly fit all.  And, IMO he should also specify it fits only factory and maybe some aftermarket versions since so many have had aftermarket addons.

napa 1010 comes with o rings but not the flat gasket. i do not think any come with the flat gasket. i used to get our filter with the oil change specials at advance, but they do not even have our filter. not sure if napa will provide one with the special. maybe oreillys will.  capt den

Just talked to NAPA and they said the filter for my 48 DeSoto is Napa 1071 that costs about $21. Checked Rock Auto and they have nothing.

The one that was shown in the picture of the engine is a by-pass unit adnthe Wix or Napa 1010 will fit inthe canister. he other type is the full flow wich has a totaly different filter.  since my 39 Desoto uses the by-pass that is how i can recommend the 1010 filter..

Yes as i stated above you will have to make your own gasket,  get some gasket material measure the inside diameter of the lid and then with a compass, if you remember what a compass is from elementary school then trace the measurement on the gasket material mark the inner side diameter the size of the lip to make a good seal. then cut out the gasket and then install. Suggest make several of these and store in the box that the oil filter came in.  A very simple project to do.  I have done this for 35 years.

everyone over thinks the issue.

Last year I was inquiring about the same thing and forum input said that a Wix 15480 was the proper size gasket for the filter housing that I have which looks a lot like the one pictured above. I ordered one last week along with my Wix 51080 filter and am expecting both today or tomorrow at the local auto parts store. Will update once I have them in hand.

The Wix 51010 shows a flat gasket in the pic as does the Wix 51071, both available at Rockauto.

I have used the 1010 and 1080 and both always came with a gasket for the lid.

Mark try a 5 in front of your number and search wix on rock auto

I typed Wix 51010 in the search window on Rock Auto and it came up with nada.  it also came up nada when I looked for a 48 DeSoto oil filter.  I went to NAPA and tried the tried the 1010.  The gasket was very skinny and would'nt fit my filter housing.  The 1071 Napa filter fit perfectly with the correct large ring gasket.

You need to move to the part # search tab. It comes right up

Thanks Sniper!  The trick is you have to put All in Manufacturer and All in Part Group.  I also found the one that fits my 48 DeSoto, which is part 51071 for $10.  Thanks. Marc.
