Jeff Balazs Posted June 7, 2015 Report Posted June 7, 2015 That is cool. Been wondering where you were at with it. I would like to see some more shots of it. Jeff Quote
Desotodav Posted June 7, 2015 Report Posted June 7, 2015 Great job Richard! Yes... more photos please. Quote
ruff1148kr Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 Looks real cool The owner must have been a better driver than most Heck its hard to find 3 good grill bars, but 5 wow My girl would love it, she has a thing for milk trucks who knew it was a thing lol they gone to love it at your first car show..... have fun with it. pflaming Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 IMHO no paint job could show off the body's features like this patina does. One detail I like is the four pairs of lights: head, park, fog, turn. The turn signals are really clever. Quote

Dave72dt Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 IMHO no paint job could show off the body's features like this patina does. One detail I like is the four pairs of lights: head, park, fog, turn. The turn signals are really clever. I couldn't see where the scattered black spots defined any body features. Black, blue and white with definitive separation lines, yes. It's not patina after you start spraying more stuff on. I'd say it's at a nice place in it's resurrection for the owner to start enjoying and sharing the fruits of his labor. I'd call it a work in progress at this point. A couple more years to complete the body work and some fresh paint to show off it's features. Since it will likely travel in the same network of shows, meets, cruises for several years and be seen by the same groups of people in that period, the fresh paint will emphasize the amount of work the owner put into it. Before , during and after. Progression. As many ooohs and aaahs, thumbs up, it will get if left as is, it will get more with fresh paint. JMO. 2 Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 Next time I go to Pomona I am going to take a real camera. I am pretty certain there is enough rust and patina (faux and real) there to send Plymouthy and some others screaming off into the hills. I definitely like the well worn look more than a show quality paint job. Surely it is more appropriate on an old work truck than fresh paint? I wish I had had enough of the old paint to go this route. I really like the way this one looks. Jeff 2 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 trust me...I see plenty of patina at any and all shows meets and roadside heaps 1 Quote
pflaming Posted June 8, 2015 Report Posted June 8, 2015 Jeff, let me know when, I'll come to LA and we'll enjoy the "sights" together. I would guess that at one time the young guys who were removing hood ornaments, door handles, other chrome pieces, lowering the back, then lowering the front, then painting a name on the side, then non stock wheels, etc., were not all that popular in the mainstream, yet many of their ideas soon started showing up in the new automobiles. The only thing that doesn't change is change itself! I envy the perfectionist and I admire creativity. Room for both in my world. JMHO Quote

I'll stick my head out the door and scream when you do the pics, ( please don't) since I'm already in the hills. Yes, it's turning into another patina thread. Back to topic, I do like the progress on the route van. Keep the pics coming. Quote

Back to topic, I do like the progress on the route van. Keep the pics coming. Dave; The way I see it these trucks are over 60 years old......and no amount of paint is ever going to change that. You can do all the cosmetic stuff like the old gals that get a tummy tuck,a boob job and a face lift but in the end the only one they are fooling is themselves. And let's face it these trucks were never built as beauty queens. What is wrong with showing your age? Why do people get one of these trucks in the first place if not to show some age? Isn't the fact that something like this is still around and doing what it was meant to do enough? I really like what the owner has done with this truck. It is a huge undertaking and I admire his perseverance and obvious respect for this old truck. Would it be as interesting or have as much character with a fresh paint job? Maybe to some?.....but to me a lot of it's history would probably get lost in the makeover. I see that all too often......and I have to ask what is the point of having an old truck if it looks nothing like it did when it was out and about and doing it's job? Jeff 1 Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 Ed....... Same truck.....snd somebody gave it a boob job. But from the photo I prefer the green version........the yellow version looks way too straight and fresh for it's age. Jeff Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 I like the green too. It still looks good enough as is... no splotchy patina. There is way too much and too bright yellow yellow yellow! Nice truck though Quote
Dave72dt Posted June 10, 2015 Report Posted June 10, 2015 The yellow version could have looked like that the first day on the job. Maybe this year it will be sporting some business logo on it. The green version of it after it's been in service for a number of years. If I was following his build to the point of fresh paint, the yellow would be my preferred, not that I'm fond of his choice of color and as you can see, I'd still like to see some logos on it to complete it. I like the black and green color scheme better than the yellow and with fresh paint, new logos would look awesome. They all started out looking new at one point in their life. It's as appropriate to build it to fresh off the lot as to 15-20 years of labor or leave it as you found it. After all the work I put into mine, I prefer it looking new. The owner of the van can call it done if he wants and a number of others on the forum would as well. I wouldn't if it were mine, but I'm not. I'll follow along and see where the build goes and ends. rkldesign Posted June 10, 2015 Author Report Posted June 10, 2015 Hey guys, Leaving the paint as is was under a lot of consideration, cost to do body work was one of them but not the main one. I wanted to drive it and drive it a lot. I also did not want to obsess over scratches or door dings when ever I parked it in a parking lot. For shows I wanted to be able to say to kids, "Sure hop in and try out the seat, have mom take your picture". As a kid I remember my Dad telling me to keep my hands off and don't touch anything. I wanted the van to be approachable to all. I see it as a piece of history and I want people to experience what it was like for the delivery guy to drive this beast every day running his route. Yes the patina thing is getting too much but then the original look of the van is neat to look at since this is how it came to me. It is also what drew me to buy it in the first place. So for now it is preserved with a flat clear coat to prevent further rust. It drives like a tank and I am getting used to steering this beast. I really wanted to go to the BBQ this year but the to do list on the van was too long. Next year for sure. 1 Quote
