Is it just me or do others feel this is a scam..you would think by reaching your present limit without default would set you above the other leeches that never pay or default on purchases..I will not link my bank account to paypal..so I guess my questions is, what other way is there around this, their credit card? who has been there already?

paypal is owned by ebay, a tremendous company they make in the hundreds of millions on a daily basis, there are million of transactions going on every day. what are you worried about, there is better security at paypal then your local bank in town. link it up, you have nothing to worry about i do alot of business with paypal and they are great.

the reason for verification is that if you sell or buy something they dont want to be the one holding the bag if you the seller skip town, and if your buying they want to make sure they have have that bank info, a credit card name and adress, means nothing, all the illigel imigrants here in ny have that!

I set up a separate account to link to my PayPal and keep a small amount of $$$ in it...I am very leary with linking up my everyday checking account with anything that can access it without my consent. Yeah I know there are safeguards to keep them thievin' folk out, but I know for a fact that it takes weeks for an account to be fixed after being wiped out electronically, and months to clear up any checks that may have bounced in the meantime. I have been notified twice in the past 3 years that my credit card information may have been accessed by an outside source (Chase & Wells Fargo were both hacked), so the separate account seems like a decent safeguard from fraudulent activity.

I did what 49Dodge 1ton did........set up a separate account i call my

"ebay account" related to Pay Pal. Not usually much money in it....so if

it gets tapped not a big loss.

Pay Pal also has a thing called an "e-check" (I think that's the right

name for it) where they will actually go into that account and send

the seller a "check" which takes him longer to receive his pay. That

happens when there isn't enough in your regular Pay Pal account, but

is enough in checking.

I haven't had any problems thus far with payments (knock on wood).

I did just what the other 2 above me did, separate bank account just for pp, that way no game playing by outsiders or ebay! i also have their cc so when i sell, out comes the $$.

You can pay with a credit card the information below is from paypal and link is how to pay with credit card

You can use Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express with PayPal.

Plus, when you pay with PayPal, you don't expose your credit card number to merchants

Phony Pay Pal hackers are well known for sending bogus e-mail asking for personal information using phony or copied Pay Pal logo. Do not reply to any e-mail sent by them. Instead contact them directly and ask if there is a problem. It sounds to me like you are being set up for a scam.

How To Identify A Phishing Paypal Email

Phishing is a form of fraud where the person who is carrying it out is trying to steal another person’s personal information whether it relates to their identity or sensitive financial information. Certainly today any company that uses the Internet to provide services to others is likely to at some time to find that their site details have been used in order to carry out such a scam. Many sites which have been used for such purposes include such ones as eBay and PayPal. In fact phishing PayPal accounts has become extremely big business for a lot of fraudsters today. But just how does one recognize a fraudulent email that is purportedly to have been sent by say PayPal?

Firstly when you receive any kind of communication from PayPal over the Internet they will not as you for certain details about yourself. The information that they will NOT request from you is as follows:-

1. Will not ask for either your credit or debit card numbers. 2. Will not ask you to provide them with details of your bank account. 3. They will not ask you to provide them with your driving license information. 4. They will not ask you to provide them with details of your email address that you use on your PayPal account. 5. They will not ask you to provide them with your password in any email that they send to you. 6. Finally they do not ask you to provide them with details of your full name.

If you do however receive an email from PayPal and are unsure if it is legitimate or not, the best thing that you can do is to open up a new browser window and log in to your PayPal account directly from that one. It is important that you do not click on any of the links that have been provided within the email that has been sent to you especially if they are requesting you to provide them with certain personal details.

When it actually comes to seeing if an email you have received from PayPal is a phishing PayPal one or not is to look more closely at what has been sent to you. Look at the greeting that is being used, in most cases the greeting being used by the scammer will be a generic one which starts something like “Dear User”, where as a legitimate email sent to you by PayPal will greet you using either your first or last name only. Also if they send you an email that is making out that your account will be closed or suspended immediately if certain information is not provided through the link in the email then ignore it all costs. Or if you are worried about what is being said in the email then open your PayPal account in a new browser and check to see if there are any problems in that way.

Tim if its just an alert you should be able to use paypal as normal and just ignore it. Annoying but funtional.

How do I send a payment by using PayPal?

Question : Answer : You can select your debit or credit card each time you make a payment:

  1. Log in to your PayPal account and click Send Money at the top of the page.
  2. Enter your payment information and click Continue.
  3. Click Change in the Payment Method section and select your card.
  4. Review your payment and click Send Money.

Just keep in mind that if you have a balance in your PayPal account, we'll use that before your debit or credit card.

If you don't have a PayPal account, you can enter your debit or credit card information during checkout to complete the payment.

"I am very leary with linking up my everyday checking account with anything that can access it without my consent."

If someone has your account number (it's on every check you write) they can access your account electronically. There is nothing you can do to stop it. You can only protest it. It's a new age.

The thing that is a bigger worry is debit cards. Do you know that they can reserve a big block of money each time you use it? For example, stick it in the gas pump, they can, and often do, reserve $125. Then they charge what you actually bought. That $125 will go away in about a week. But, in the meantime, you account is short $125. Take a trip, buy gas 4 times, you've got $500 missing. Will you bounce a check (or many checks) if $500 is missing from your checking account? Many of us would much of the time. Too bad. Same at a restaurant, motel or other places.

I think debit cards are one of the biggest scams around. Be warned.

It is also my understanding that it is easier to resolve a problem that may arise when payment was made using a credit card rather than using a debit card including incidents where the card has been "compromised"

I don't even know anybody that writes checks anymore:eek:

I'm one of the old timers because I write checks. No debit card or direct deposit action here! Checks are only used to pay mail in bills.

With all the scams out there.I was a little gun shy after my wife gave ALL her informaiton to some scum bag somewhere. I tried to ignore the one from paypal but they kept bugging me. I called and got a real person I could understand They gave me a tepm pass word to get into paypal. I don't think it's a scam. That was over two months ago with no problems so far. Stan

I don't know any one but my landlord, utilities, or bancques that will take a checque any more. Every where I go in Topeka, there are large fading signs that say, "Sorry, we no longer accept personal checks," or "NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED."

You must have a really bad bancque or buy gas at some really shady places. I've never had a hold go longer than a weekend, usu. cleared by the end of the day. I've never had a restaurant, hotel, or any where else place a hold on my card. Besides, if you push the credit button instead of debit the hold won't go in to place.

We use a credit card for gas, groceries, and other purchases over 50 bucks. We then write one check to the CC company to clear the balance. We get cash back, which we apply to the balance when it becomes available. We have debit cards which we use at the ATM for walking around money. Still write checks for mortgage and utilities. Had a argument with one vendor who said they were going to start charging a fee to send the bill and process the check. We told them we would come to the office and pay in small bills and rolled coin if it came to that. They said that was unreasonable. We pointed out to one of their financial officers that if they charged a fee or refused payment in legal tender, that there were probably several FCC and state rules against conducting business in that manner.

My wife got a notice from ZAPPOS where she did some one off holiday purchases. Apparently, their system was hacked. She used the credit card so any stuff arising from that will be deniable.

Its becoming nearly impossible to transact business in cash anymore, and heaven forbid you have anything bigger than a 20. 50's and C notes presented to a chashier usually trigger a visit from the head cashier and assistant manager, like only counterfiters and con artists have access to them.

..I've been an ebay member since 2001.Bought stuff, never sold anything.I've never had a problem with paypal using my credit card.I too received a notice that I must now get "verified" which involves giving bank account info as mentioned... Not going to happen.

When I first started buying stuff on ebay I always paid w/ postal orders. After getting ripped off (no merchandise was ever sent), I joined paypal, and it seems to me to be much safer.
