alan32433 Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 I ordered carpet for my 48 DeSoto 4 door from Kanter. Look at what I got! No where close to fitting, It's probably 10" too narrow. No idea what this fits, Volkswagen??? Not fitting is bad enough, but the quality literally sucks. I'm not asking for the correct carpet, I want my money back. Last but not least, they didn't include the extra 2 yards I ordered for $80. First experience with Kanter is not a good one. We'll see what happens when I ask for a refund. Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Well that sucks! Is a plymouth narrower by 10 inches? And is that heal pad correct? Looks like a heal pad from a 60's car. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Should there be cut-outs for the steering column, pedals, and brake cylinder fill? Quote
Gary Manes Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Boy, that does not look like it was made for any MOPAR. There should be cut outs for the previously mentioned items as well as a flap or something that could be moved for the brake fluid hole. The pictures of Chrysler carpets I have seen have flaps that can be moved to add brake fluid, fluid drive hydraulic oil, and transmission oil providing a very nice finished look. I think, like you, I would not even bother to ask for replacement for the corrrect carpet. In the photo it certainly does not look like very good quality material whether it fit or not. Hope things work out for you. Quote
alan32433 Posted February 15, 2011 Author Report Posted February 15, 2011 You guys are correct, there are no cut-outs for anything, brake and clutch pedals, gas pedal, nothing. There's another thread going about carpet, but here's the question again. Anyone know of a manufacturer who makes good high quality carpet? Also for anyone out of work, if you have a pair of scissors you can get a job at Kanter's making carpet. From the looks of this one, it only takes 5 minutes to make and you can get $200 bucks. Quote
TodFitch Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Not to change the topic too much as it looks like what you received is totally unsatisfactory regardless of this questions, and you are working on a DeSoto. But when did they start putting carpet into the front of Plymouths? At least in the 1930s it was always rubber matting in front, carpet in rear. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 My P-15 was built with a rubber front mat also, with carpet in the rear. Special DeLuxe, too. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 its apparent that someone at Kanter popped the pooch on this one..it is a shame..by the time you get your money back or maybe be held hostage awaiting for them to send the correct stuff..you are not going to be happy in the end as the aggrivation factor preys on your mental outlook on the project...incidents like this knock the wind out of your sails for sure...hope it gets resolved quickly...even if you send them a picture I am sure they will argue that the item is correct for your car... Young Ed Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 FYI just on carpets in general I've never seen one that was cut for the pedals and high beam switch. Quote
Robin (UK) Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Hi Alan, I can't personally vouch for their carpet, but I got my P15 convertible top from Bill Hirsch Autos, and it is lovely. I got great service and a great product. I would suggest it's worth calling Bill to speak to him about your carpet. I'd be very interested to know how you get on, as I want to replace the carpets in my car, soon. Here's Bill's web address... http://www.hirschauto.com/ Quote
Chester Brzostowski Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Likewise, I was just going to order a carpet set for my P15 from Kanter. Very interested in how this works out. Also can someone please confirm if the 1948 P15 SPD had ribbed rubber in the front. It seems to me that this would make better sense because of the removable toe panel. Chet... Quote
desoto1939 Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 I just had a front and rear carpet set made for my 1939 Desoto 4 door sedan by Auto Interior. Auto Interior Systems [autointeriors@xplornet.com] The cost was approx 275 with the shipping. The quality was first hand. I have already put the rear carpet inthe car and it was a perfect fit. I have not put the front carpet inthe car because of the cold weath but i did a dry run fit and it was also perfect. They do not cut the holes for the dimmer switch and or the holes for the gas pedal becasue they informed me that each car is a little different. They do mark the area to gice you the approx location. The carpet is bound on all edges and alsocome with the heel pad. I could not find anyone that had the pattern for a 39 Desoto and they told me they could make it for me. I trusted them site unseen and did not provide any pattern and they were dead on with the fit. Write to them and ask for ralp. They are great to work with and I would recomend. You can aklso contact me. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com Quote
49 Dodge Dude Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Wow, that's too bad. I've ordered stuff from Kanter before, and never had any issues. That does not look good, though. Hopefully they'll do you right and resolve the issue quickly. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) Yes, the P15s did come with rubber mats in the front and carpet in the rear. But.......where you gonna find the rubber mat nowadays? So, most people now just go with carpet. I went to a wholesale auto carpet place in Kansas City, gave them measurements......bought a roll of carpet in the color I wanted. Also some binding and padding (felt type). They sell those scuff plates separately. I wasn't going to use one, but failed to tell my upholstry guy.....so he installed a black one he had on hand. Rather pi***d me off, so I took him the matching maroon one I had and requested he glue it on top of the black one, so it would match. He also made a flap that can be folded back to reach the master cylinder under the floor. And another piece for the trunk floor. Charged me $250 for labor. The roll of loop pile carpet was only about $10 per yard. Got my carpet (6 yds), 17 1/2 yds of vinyl for seats (which I've now decided not to use) and other items at National Fabric Company Auto Trimming and Glass Shop Supplies 901 S 7th St Kansas City, Kansas 66105 (913) 281-1833 Don't know what he does about shipping, as I walked in and made my purchases. JIPJOBXX Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Did you call them up and asked if they think they sent you the wrong rug? In today's world of mail order stuff a sales person can make a error but usually if your dealing with a reputable company they will make it right for you. They just don't want bad PR. Jon Quote

I think I will try to go with the rubber mat in the front. I believe I can get this from a company out in Delaware that specializes in industrial rubber products. Now to find a picture of an original floor mat. Tks again, Chet… Quote
55 Fargo Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Phone Kanter, and see what there customer service staff have to say. If you think they do not have the quality you are looking for, then ask fora refund. There are other ready made carpet suppliers, I suggest that, or buy quality carpet, from say SMS auto fabrics, and have a local upholsterer cut.sew and install, but it will cost a few bucks more that is for sure. All the pre-sewn carpet kits require some tweaking, pedal holes cut etc Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 I once got a huge piece of rubber car mat from a van conversion shop. They pulled them out of new vans so carpet could be installed. An ambulance builder might also be worth a shot. You never know... Quote
Tim Keith Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 It is not difficult to cut your own carpet. The fit can appear as good as the molded carpets and you can save lots of money. Quote
Greenbomb Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 It sounds like someone taking or filling the order punched a wrong button and gave you a '38 instead of a '48, as already mentioned. There should be some part #'s on what they sent to cross check and they will probably make it right for you. let us know how it goes. Quote
windsor8 Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 I got carpet from Kanter for my 48 D24 CC and was very satisfied with it. Quote
alan32433 Posted February 17, 2011 Author Report Posted February 17, 2011 I called Kanter yesterday. They agreed to refund my money but had no explanation why the carpet didn't fit or why the extra two yards I ordered wasn't included. The invoice correctly listed my car, but on the outside of the box it said "L42"? They wouldn't refund my shipping however, so their mistake costs me money. All in all, the carpet (had it fit) was pretty lousy quality. Some areas that would show had no binding, areas that wouldn't show did have binding?? The carpet itself was really thin too, about like indoor outdoor carpet. Kanter doesn't make the carpet sets, maybe they should find another vender. SMS Fabric does make carpet for my car, a whopping $575 will buy it. I have their samples and definitely the carpet is very high quality. I contacted Lebarron Bonney to see it they have carpet, no answer yet. Someone suggested Bill Hirsch, I'll check them out too. Thanks for all the inputs! Alan Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 They wouldn't refund my shipping however, so their mistake costs me money... That is about the cheesiest move I've seen in a long time. What absolute gall to make you pay so much as a dime for what is clearly faulty product and missing items. And what arrogance to figure that you will just lie there and be Kanter's doormat. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ If it were me I would not rest until I got a full refund of product cost and shipping. I would get the name of the President — and e-mail address if possible — and e-mail him the pictures and a brief description of why you are dissatisfied and what is the outcome you require. I would copy the sales department, customer service department, any address I could find on their site. I would ask him if the tables were turned and he was holding the short end of the stick, how would he want to be treated? I would tell him there is a thread about this problem on the P15-D24 forum and I will be reporting the final outcome of this matter to the group, who are a prime market for Kanter's products. If I did not get a commitment for a full refund within 48 hours I would follow up by re-sending to the same recipients. 48 hours later I would start calling Mr. Prez on the 1-800# and leaving messages. That really ought to do it, but I can think of several more levels of pressure if necessary. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ It's not just about the money. You will be doing your fellow hobbyists a valuable service if Kanter gets the larger message and adjusts their return policies to treat the customer fairly. Anyway, that's my opinion. Quote
