I was reading the 55 build on this site and the hand crank for engine was mentioned. And I have looked at the hole in the front of my truck and the crank pulley with the notches in it. And wonderd did all of these trucks come with a hand crank? Or Was it a option? Does any one sell them now? I think I would like to have one. Does anyone know where to get one,or have a picture of one? If not available, I may build one and a picture would help.

I have started "Bob" a few times with the one you gave me. Reminds me how out of shape I am..... But, it sure is fun :D

I just checked those out. That is cool.I can't wait to blow my 12 year olds mind when I start my truck by hand! He seen the hole and asked what it was for, when I told him it was for hand crank. He laughed and said yah right, that's only in cartoons dad.

I've hand cranked enough engines that the novelty of it has long since worn off.

Hand cranks...stock or not...I'd say it might be a 50/50.  I've only run across a handfull of 218 engines with the crank bolt on the shaft.

I think I will build one. It looks pretty simple. Just a bent chunk of round stock. Hardest part will be the notch at end.if some one who has one could post a close up pic of the notch. That would be awsome.

I have only hand cranked a 20 HP Howard Hoe, a 12 HP Perkins Diesel, and that's it.

I've started a few lightplane engines by hand though. No crank needed.

The piece at the end is just a round pin. Drill a hole and 'bobs your uncle'.

Yep. I don’t know how much they varied over the years or between the early cars and the later trucks, but here is the one for my ’33 Plymouth.

Im getting old and lazy I prefer to turn a key or in your case turn a key and push a button on the floor much less work thats why they invented starters!

I've ended up with a few crank handles over the years. The handle which I have in the blue 52 truck has a loose sleeve over the handle and a CDDP part number stamped along the shaft. I was worried what the Customs Officials would make of it when I traveled to LA with one in my suitcase for Hank back in 2014, but they asked no questions. I suppose that the handles would be easy enough to make it you had a bender with the correct mandrel.

Thanks for the pics and info. The old guy at my shop told me the same thing.. That's what Starters are for. And he said I'll probably break my arm. But I'm not the brightest and I won't be satisfied untill I can say I have started my truck this way.... Or break my arm....

Not as big an issue with automatic spark advance and more than 4 cylinders, but you should be careful:

  • Wrap your fingers and thumb around the handle the same way (don’t grip it with your thumb going the other way as is natural) so that if it kicks back it will pull itself out of your hand.
  • Always do a pull up rather than a push down. If it kicks back it will pull out of your hand. If you are pushing on it and it kicks back you can break your arm, shoulder or worse.

FWIW, I have started my car with the crank just to see that I could. But nowadays about the only thing I use the crank for is turning the engine over with the plugs out to get the static timing mark on the flywheel aligned with the pointer on the bell housing timing cover ('34 was the last year for that, they moved the timing mark to the hub pulley on the DeLuxe for '34 and all models in '35).

Since forever there has been a crank out in the garage, but it has a large hex on the end. No clue what it was for.

Hello from the car side.

My '38 Dodge came with a hand crank. I've had it for about 50 years.

I would guess that the crank's the same for trucks.

Although they aren't very clear, here are 3 photos of it.

If you want exact measurements on it e-mail me or

call 240 315 5212.
