central52 Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 Hi folks, How do you change the oil filter on a 47 Dodge. I took the top off the unit, and it looks like you pull it up with that ring? Well, it won't budge. Help. Ed Quote
RobertKB Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 Pull harder. Ditto. Don beat me to it. Same principle as use a BFH. Quote
48ply1stcar Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 Take it off and soak it with liquid wrench or deep creep. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 See is the filter element will spin a little bit . It fits snug on the center . If it will spin , it should pull out . Quote
Niel Hoback Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 Ya'll ain't pullin hard enuff. Stick two big screwdrivers in 180 degrees apart and pop that thing outta there. If it comes apart, take it out a piece at a time. It's not like you're gonna have it rebuilt. Quote
steveplym Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 Probably being held in by suction and may have been a while since it's been changed. You can get replacements at NAPA pretty cheap, and I think I have a wix filter # somewhere that will crossover. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 25, 2014 Report Posted December 25, 2014 The WIX number and the napa #s are almost the same as Wix makes them. I believe you drop the 5 from the start and add a 2 for the napa #. Or just drop the 5 to get the napa gold #. 1 Quote
central52 Posted December 25, 2014 Author Report Posted December 25, 2014 OK, will use those suggestions. Glad to know that it does come out. Eventually. Ed Quote
54Illinois Posted December 25, 2014 Report Posted December 25, 2014 Looks nice and gray...Be sure to screw the top on REAL hard, or it may leak. Quote
desoto1939 Posted December 25, 2014 Report Posted December 25, 2014 alsomake sure you have a gasket in the lid to help seal the top and from the oil seeping out from the top when the car is runni9ng. I use a NAPA 1010 gold filter element that just drops into the unit. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com 1 Quote

Don Coatney Posted December 25, 2014 Report Posted December 25, 2014 Old filters can be nasty. Take a wif of this one. Quote
Robert Horne Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 This is how my 37 looked when I first brought it home. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 Be a big boy man and yank it out. Quote
T120 Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 Be a big boy man and yank it out. ...Of course while adhering to OSHA. - excuse the smiley Quote
plymouthcranbrook Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 (edited) When re- installing the new filter be sure the top gasket for the lid doesn't move when you tighten it. You might have to hold in in place as you start. Edited December 26, 2014 by plymouthcranbrook Quote
central52 Posted December 28, 2014 Author Report Posted December 28, 2014 Ok. Finally got that d--- filter out. Shredded it little. So, I also removed all the oil in the canister and cleaned it. Now, when I go to put the five quarts in, do I have to put some of it in the canister? Or just put the whole 5 quarts in the engine. And, by the way, Napa 1010 Gold doesn't fit. The hole is too small. So I'm looking around for one that has a one inch diameter hole. Ed Quote
rumble48 Posted December 28, 2014 Report Posted December 28, 2014 not an expert, but is it possible that the larger center is actually part of the old filter, and should also be removed?? you should be able to look at the old filter and see if the center section is missing..... 1 Quote

I was thinking the same thing. Also you can try a 1080. Quote
central52 Posted December 28, 2014 Author Report Posted December 28, 2014 Never thought of that. Will go out and look. But from what I saw last time, that center thing looked pretty well stuck in there. I'll try to wiggle it, and see what happens. Ed Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 28, 2014 Report Posted December 28, 2014 For sure it is part of the filter. Should be a naked pipe inside the filter housing. Quote
RobertKB Posted December 28, 2014 Report Posted December 28, 2014 Yes, definitely part of the filter. I use a NAPA 1080 or WIX equivalent. Diameter of the hole is the same as a 1010 so you should be able to use what you have. Get a good pair of pliers on there and try to work the left-over part free. Otherwise a BFH may be required. central52 Posted December 29, 2014 Author Report Posted December 29, 2014 yep, you're right. That center piece must hav been part of the filter. With a little jiglling and pulling, it came out. Thanks for that advice. Ed Quote
40phil41 Posted December 29, 2014 Report Posted December 29, 2014 (edited) NAPA 1010 fits mine (D24 engine in D14 car). FWIW, I agree with the others that the centre of the filter is still attached to the cannister post. Phil oops! Our messages crossed paths. Glad you got it out.
