  1. PepBoys don't have them. Went to my local CarQuest guy, and he had them. I know once I put them in, the car should start up more easily. Ed

  3. Greg is right. Car runs well, no smoking, pinging, etc. But I always seem to want to tweak things to make it better. I guess the old adage is true, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Ed
  4. Checked around other old car sites, and many agree that the NGK plugs are great. Question: the BR6S is a resistor plug, the B6S is not. For an old car, like my 47 Dodge, would the B6S plug be more appropriate? Ed

  6. Silly question, I know. But can you clean the top of a piston thru the spark plug hole? I'm replacing my plugs, and it seemed like a good idea. Ed

  9. I'm thinking of changing the spark plugs on my 47 Dodge. After looking over previous threads on this subject, the consensus seems to favor the Autolite 306. What do you people think? And what about the cold and hot plugs? Should I make a decision on that? I drive mostly in the warm weather, (spring, summer, fall), but I do take the car out during winter occassionaly, if there's no snow. Ed
  10. Hi guys, great info on my cold starting problem. It just might be that it's not getting enough fuel. Would pumping the gas pedal a lot, help? That's what I've been doing. And how would that effect the automatic choke? I never could figure that out. I never really had a problem when I had my 47 Plymouth with the standard manual choke. Ed
  11. I gleaned over some previous threads on a 6 volt battery booster pack. And found them interesting. With the colder weather on us now, here in Connecticut, it takes a longer cranking time to start my 47 Dodge. Rather than bring out another 6 volt battery to assist the one in the car, can I use my 12 volt battery booster pack to start it, knowing to keep off all electrical units, and immediately disconnecting the pack from the battery? Ed

  15. OK, problem solved. Greg g suggested maybe points in regulator sticking. So, I gave the regulator a couple of good whacks with a plastic hammer. And, it worked. Amp gauge reads normal when I gas the pedal, just moves to the right a little now. Whew! Ed
  16. Ok,my amp gauge reads all the way to the right when I gas the pedal, but only slightly to the right when idling. I bought my 47 Dodge last year, and noticed the battery cables were set up negative post to engine ground, positive post to starter. It's a 6 volt system with generator, and all electrical systems work fine. I posted this question on another thread recently. Would the voltage regulator be the answer? Ed
  17. Checked the electrolyte in battery, water above the plates. With hi beam on, raced engine, and light slightly increased in intensity. Have a generator, after running car for five minutes, it felt warm, but not hot. I'm thinking about the voltage regulator. When I got the car last year, I noticed the battery was hooked up to be negative ground. Not positive. Would this be a reason? All electrical circuits function normally. I saw on ebay, a voltage regulator for sale that stated it's for a negative ground. Think that might be the problem? I hope you guys don't take offense that I ask stupid questions, and that I should know better. I appreciate this forum for the input I get on a lot of issues I have with me car. Ed
  18. Thanks, guys, for that info. Will start to troubleshoot the problem. In fact, I'm going out to the garage and check the battery to see if I lost electrolyte. Ed
  19. My amp reading on my 47 Dodge reads all the way to the right, when I'm driving, or when I push on the accelarator. At idle, it reads slightly above the mid mark. Doesn't look right to me. What would cause this? Any damage to the electrical system if I keep driving like this? Ed

  21. On my 47 Dodge, I noticed it has a red dash lite to indicate when the parking brake was engaged. Wasn't working, so I traced the power wire from the the unit on the parking brake lever to the switch on the dash. And it's hot till I get to the unit. Took it out, weird looking thing. Hot wire just connects to one outlet with the screw shown. Why the other two? Can't see where underneath dash it connects. Bulb didn't go on. And it's a small one. Trying to locate someone who sells them. Must be a simpler way to connect a lite. Ed

  23. Ok, guys, here's the info. I did run a test wire, 12 ga. directly from battery to the trunk and the wires I hooked up to the tail light. It was a little brighter than before. I put a board between brake pedal and seat and checked the lites. I have directional signals. They go on when I don't push the brake pedal down, when I do, the brake lite goes on, but not the directional lite. So, it's a trade-off, I much rather have the brake lites in the tail lites, since, as I mentioned before, most people in back would see them as a normal brake lite in most cars. As for the directional signals, they work, till I apply brakes. If need be, I can stick my hand out the window, and signal. I remember when I took my driving test when I was sixteen. (oh, so long ago), Hand straight out, left turn, hand upward, right turn, hand downward, stop. Any of you oldtimers, remember that? Ed
  24. Yep, I think I'll try that. Maybe going along inside under the carpet. Now, I'm looking at the brake switch, which wire is which? Does one wire go directly to the voltage regulator? All these wires underneath are taped together in a big lump. Hard to trace them. Ed
