California has cautionary signs everywhere now. Every store, building, and stinking outhouse has one like this:

"Caution! The State of California has determined that this facility contains blablablah...which can cause cancer or...blablablah..."

The signs state whatever evil cancerous agent is sold at that particular store (restaurant, gas station, whatever...) or just the general message that it does contain such things, without itemization of them. They even put the signs at various places inside the stores.

So on the lumber aisle at Lowes I saw (approximately) this:

"Caution! The State of California has determined cutting wood causes dust, and dust is known to be a source of cancer..." etc.

Ummm, just what place doesn't contain dust? Dust is everywhere! What about air? You can die from breathing our air. They don't advertise that one.

Maybe we just need one really big sign on the border as you cross in:

"Caution! The State of California has determined that it contains DUST everywhere. It's all over, and lots of other stuff that can cause cancer too!  If you don't want cancer turn around and go live somewere else!"

...And don't you guys even THINK about bringing any dangerous and illegal dust into our state!   :P

Well they do have signs that say:

"Caution! The State of California has determined that drinking beer, wine or distilled spirits can cause....blablablah..."

So it's not like we didn't already know it was bad.  ;)

Wood dust (i.e. sawdust) is actually a known carcinogen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sawdust#Health_and_safety_hazards

True, but we're allowed to recycle it in the standard bins, so I'll assume it's not on the same danger scale as plutonium.

People see the word carcenogen and freak out, but some of these things are hazards we are all exposed to and cannot avoid, and some of them are things we can avoid but don't because the concentrations are so small.

I know some woods are quite toxic, but mainly I thought it was exotic stuff like ironwood and such. I wonder how Douglas fir rates? That and Hem fir are the two biggies around here. Virtually no other woods are used for framing hereabouts.

A few years ago I needed two 8 foot 2X12's for some stairs at my camp.  Wanted pressure treated as the steps were on an outside deck.  Lowes only had a 16 footer and would not cut it for me!  They did offer to let me borrow a hand saw so I could cut it in half out in the parking lot.  Obviously, I declined their generous offer!

at that rate the citizens of California are going to die of boredom awaiting old age...ma and pa sitting around glaring at each other...both snarling their upper lip and thinking "kill" when little did they know it was the dog that cut the cheese...so they start thinking if only I could....well you get the picture...you not going to make it out alive folks...

Carcinogen causes cancer! I thought a carcinogen was a synonym for a kardascian, wow, learn something every day, keeps me young.

I should've been dead many years ago as I've lived in the Douglas Fir woods in the state of Washington all my life and cut thosands of feed of Doug Fir.

We need to quit being scared by these fools scaring everyone to death.....literally.

They should also post signs stating you might be scared to death by reading the following dangerous warning notice!!!

Scared to death I understand as one is dead having been scared that much. But I have a problem with being scared half to death   How does one know when they are half dead?

Once they say "I DO"!  (I guess I was half dead for about 2-1/2 years, then not dead at all, now been half dead for about 15-1/2 years........)

Iron wood is toxic?!  I sawed up a whole lot of that stuff while we lived in the Amazon.  Stinks when you saw it, but I didn't know it was toxic.  But then I also sawed asbestos sheeting for shower walls in our house.  Just tried to stay up wind of the dust.  (The roofing was also corrogated cement-asbestos.)

"Cautionary sign" ignored. We attended a YFC funded raising auction. I won the bid on an automatic battery charger, hookittoabattrryand it maintains the charge. On the bottom of the mfgrs presentation package was this sticker " not to be sold in Oregon or California" !!!

Good thing that you got it at a fund raising auction rather than buying it in a store. :)

It's because Calif. is the breeding ground for senseless lawsuits. So we have a bunch of senseless laws.

Perhaps a consequence of  Universities turning out a higher proportion of lawyers vs engineers
