Merle Coggins Posted July 8, 2014 Report Posted July 8, 2014 Well, today's trip went well. Only a couple of issues, but nothing to stop me. The truck ran flawlessly, 395 miles door to door, following I-94 pretty much all the way. We left at 9:00 am and arrived at the hotel here in Auburn Hills/Pontiac at around 5:30. There are some nice vehicles here already. I'll have to head back out in a few minutes to get a few pictures. Just now got settled into the room. The "minor" issues; 1. The weather strip on the division post of the passenger door, that seals against the vent window, came loose. I saw it flapping in the wind and Michelle was able to grab it and pull it off the rest of the way before it disappeared all together. I never liked those rubber strips anyway. I believe they were from Steele. Someone here found a source for the original fuzzy strips that go there. Who was it and if that person is reading this could you please PM me the info on them? I'd like to correct this over the winter. 2. We were coming in to a construction zone and has to move over partially onto the shoulder to clear the construction. Then I heard a noise and looked in the mirror in time to see my hub cap spinning across the shoulder and into the median wall. No place to stop in the single lane construction zone, so I had to say good buy and keep going. I believe I have a spare at home. But for the rest of this week I'll have to just leave my nuts exposed. Any one in the Detroit area have a spare Pilot-House hub cap? Quote
Young Ed Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 That sucks about the cap. If you can't find a dodge truck cap any mopar cap from the late 30s into the 50s should fit in its place. See if anyone notices it has a ship or says plymouth desoto etc Quote
52b3b Joe Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 That stinks about the wheel cover! I don't have any spare dodge ones, but I have a few plymouth caps you can have Saturday if you want! I think I'll be cruising in my daily driver for Saturday. It's going to be a lot to bring the truck with me leaving Sunday morning for a week-long trip in my other old car. I really wanted to get my truck up there, but I don't think it will be worth getting a truck and trailer to bring the half finished truck. I'm still torn on what I'm going to do. I guess whatever I show up with Saturday will be the answer. Quote
Desotodav Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Pity about that hubcap coming loose Merle. Andy B has those 'L' shape fuzzy strips for about $15 per set from memory. Quote
48Dodger Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 What a bummer Merle.....maybe you'll find a new nut cover at the show...... Think I'll put my address on the inside of the caps and hope some Ol' wrench head sents it back my way........ At least you found a great passenger for the trip this year! 48D Quote
ggdad1951 Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 have fun at the show, shake Joe's hand for me. Bummer about the hubcap. I got my fuzzy "L"'s from Restoration Specialties. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 We toured the Ford Piquette St. Plant today. It's the first plant that Ford Motor Company used to mass produce automobiles. They assembled Model's A, B, C, F, K, N, R, S, and the early T, before production was moved to the new Highland Park plant. There was a lot of good history in this building, including a little about the Dodge Brothers. As many of you know they produced engines and transmissions for Ford before they ventured out to make their own cars and trucks. They, of course, had some nice early Fords, including this "first" Snowmobile to be continued... Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 Here is one that was converted to a tractor. And a Model T towing an early pop up camper. Quote
Don Coatney Posted July 9, 2014 Report Posted July 9, 2014 Just this past week I watched on NETFLIX a Henry Ford Documentary. It was a real eye opener on Henry. I recommend NETFLIX and for those who do not use it you should. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 9, 2014 Author Report Posted July 9, 2014 And a little preview of what was in the lot last night. I love Town and Country's, especially the convertibles. And Airflows... And the only other truck in the lot, not towing a trailer. Quote
Young Ed Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Just this past week I watched on NETFLIX a Henry Ford Documentary. It was a real eye opener on Henry. I recommend NETFLIX and for those who do not use it you should. I wonder if that was the same 2hr special I watched on PBS. Either way the one I saw was fascinating. Jeff Balazs Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 That Airflow is a gorgeous thing. I really like the color. Have fun Merle. Jeff Quote
John-T-53 Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 (edited) Merle, Enjoy the show...wish I could be there! And hopefully someone at the Michigan DOT reads this post and offers to find and mail you your hubcap! If you see any of the following, take some pics...(on my "to be acquired" list)... 1958 Fury 1959 Desoto Sportsman 1960 Dart Pioneer/Phoenix 1969 / 1970 Sport Fury Edited July 10, 2014 by John-T-53 Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I lost a hubcap once , then I read about glueing your hub caps on ! Just a few spots of clear silicone around the edge and no more lost caps . I sounds crude but it works . 2 Quote
JBNeal Posted July 10, 2014 Report Posted July 10, 2014 I started dabbing RTV on centercaps back in '95 and haven't lost a cap yet. The RTV effectively forms a wedge so that the cap cannot vibrate loose, allowing the spring clips to hold the cap in place Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 11, 2014 Author Report Posted July 11, 2014 I notice that a couple of tabs are bent in a little so that may have let it get too loose. Someone here has a bunch of stuff out for sale this afternoon. At first glance I thought he had one but it has a ship in the middle instead of "DODGE". Bummer. Looked close. Here's more competition. Merle Coggins Posted July 12, 2014 Author Report Posted July 12, 2014 Great show today. Joe even trailered his truck up here, so we had 2 Pilot-House trucks here. (well, 1 and a half anyway. ) Here are pics of the trucks in the class (not including the minivans) And what was in the back of that one... This one has 38,000 original miles. 2 Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 12, 2014 Author Report Posted July 12, 2014 and more... And if you want the whole album... http://s66.photobucket.com/user/mac2026/library/WPC%202014?sort=2&page=1 2 Quote

(well, 1 and a half anyway. ) Here are pics of the trucks in the class (not including the minivans) 1 and a half of one type still out numbered the rest of the truck models! I really need to get the other half done so next time there are two lol. I didn't really know until yesterday if I was going to trailer the truck to the show, but I figured I would regret it if I didn't. Everything went smoothly and had no problems. It was only about 100 miles each way, but while maneuvering through Detroit it felt more like 500 miles. Mary and I had a great time at the show. There were a lot of nice cars/trucks, but nothing beats getting to talk with good people and friends. It was a fun day! Quote
Todd B Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 Merle I have several different original hub caps, post a picture of one and I will see if I can help you out. FYI: the first snowmobile was built in my home town of Clintonville WI, by Elisan and FWD Corp. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 wow....nice things at the show...I LOVE Power Wagons! Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 14, 2014 Author Report Posted July 14, 2014 Well, the party's over. I'm home, and back at work now. It was a great week. The trip home was uneventful. I didn't push as hard, but still cruised right along at around 65. (sometimes climbing up around 70) I did experience some hard restarts after stopping for gas, or potty stops. It also feels like I've lost a few HP. It acts like the timing is a little off. I'll recheck/reset my points and timing when I get a chance. Most likely a little wear on the points throwing it off a bit. It's been a while since I've adjusted them. This may also be the time to recheck/readjust the float level. It's been on my "to-do" list, but I haven't done it yet. The weather was great for both days of driving. It was getting a little warm yesterday (sunny and mid 80's) but not too hot. I've got a nice trucker's tan going. Actually got a little sun burn on my left arm. I took the 3rd place plaque. The "Indian" Panel got 2nd, and the black Plymouth got first place. The Power Wagon got "Best of Show, Dodge", and the Sweptside took the "President's Cup" (top award) See y'all next year in Springfield, IL. July 21-25, 2015 Merle Quote
