Red Rims or Black Rims or Body Colored Rims

Hey all, just wondering what the "preferences" are with respect to rim color.

Now it seems a lot of the Hot Rod world is using red rims, with bias ply white whites, and a  lot of retro guys on here enjoy the color red for rims with either blackwalls or wide whites.

I recently discovered some look at Red Rims in disgust and do not find them complimentary in anyway.

I enjoy red rims on certain applications, it can and does look sharp on a lot of vintage type vehicles whether stock ,custom or hot rod.

I have also read, that black rims were a 1950s thing, possibly with pinstriping on them, with a dog dish or baby moon caps.

Once I paint the truck box this spring, may change rim color to body color to be determined at that time.

what the difference does the opinion at large make if you are building to suit yourself or do you just need approval of others?  every article I have ever read and judging sheet sates that only red wheels were put on a red vehicle..is your vehicle red?  Only advertisement and phamplets where the artist took creative liberties did they depict red rims.

I painted one rim red, one black, and one blue. Then I put on a hub cap and a lux ring. The red was flashy, the black was classic, and the blue was a nice accent so I went with the blue and no luxury ring. It's the look YOU like. Go to Google, put in 1955 Dodge trucks, click on images and look at the possibilities. They are endless. That said, there is no answer for you.

In my opinion red is a color for accent. A little goes a LONG way. JMPO

Great picture Ed, car looks good with black rims.

Dads plymouth in 66. He said the first thing he did was pull the wheel covers and paint the wheels black.

This is a discussion Tim, not a permission request. No red rims for you.

Paul, your truck looks good with the blue rims and patina combo...

I was at a car show once where a guy came up and told me I needed baby moon hubcaps on my chrome wheels. I promptly told him that if it was his car then he could do with as he pleased. Same applies to red rims and fuzzy dice. I really do not care how anyone dresses there wheels. If my wheels were red I would not ask and not care if everyone liked them.

If I owned your truck I would paint the wheels plaid.

MY personal preference would be to put red wheels mostly on red cars, probably with a trim ring to tone down the red.  Traditional rods used to do a lot of red wheels, especially on flat black cars but has been done so much it's starting to trend away from it. MY personal opinion on your truck would be either a cream color or body color on the wheels with trim rings and caps and lose the whitewalls.  I could also do black rims on blackwall tires.  MY opinion is whitewalls do not belong on trucks.

Since I did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night, you should probably pay no attention to my opinion.

I like the red rims and white walls on your truck, looks good. By the way what size are the tires you're running?

-Chris

Hi Chris, they are L78 15s, which are a little bigger than what I need. The G78 15, or 750 15s would be fine. If you are going modern sizing, P235 75 15

Well Dave, tires are stayin for now, have seen many trucks with WW tires, and they look great. The bias ply design of my tires look much better than radials on this application, whether WW or blacks.

I know, we've been through this before and I still don't care for them on trucks.  You obviously know what you want on it so go with that, red rims if you want.  There's no need to try to please me.  That's why it's just an opinion  and that's all any of us can do.

I'm with Dave on this one. I have never been a fan of red rims, unless they match the body color of the vehicle. I also don't care for wide whites on trucks. I'll admit I've seen a couple that looked good, but for the most part I don't like them. However, like others have said, it's your truck so you need to make it how you like it. Either way, I like what you've done with your truck. It's come a long way since you first got it.

I like: White Wall tires

         Silver painted rims

         Charcoal painted rims

         Yellow Cream painted rims

          Satin Black painted rims

          Oiled Bare Metal rims

I also like: B2B's over any other year

                 highside beds

                 5 windows

                 vent (wing) windows

                 orignal style bumpers

                  Visors

I prefer, but dont' mind having: V8 over L6

                                                 Modified over a stock frame

                                                 Race tires over Street

                                                 Pepsi over Coke

And there is nothing more I like than Pizza. Period.

Dodge CREAM!  ;)

what ever works for you I'd say.  they current ones on your avatar pic look good with your truck.  I don't prefer WW tires on trucks tho.  Those are for ladies to get dressed up, trucks (to me are boys) and get dirty and WW tires don't get dirty well (yes FEF will never get dirty).

Hey thanx for all the input and ideas. The rationale for this thread was not to give me any ideas on what I will be doing, just some discussion on the topic, not to ruffle any feathers or anything.

I am like 48dodger, like many different colors etc, I like chrome reverse rims too, chrome smoothies and baby moons I wouldn't mind either.

My truck travel's gravel roads, hauls things, goes to the garbage dump too.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas.......Rockwood

Thank you. I plan on putting white walls on my truck with smoothie wheels with the metal part of the smoothie painted gloss black or satin. Leaning towards the satin black. So I'm totally digging your white walls and red rims. Just my 2 cents.

It was a discussion here that made me consider a red wheel on my truck. Paul in fact suggested it. I ended up going with a deep burgundy.....that I never would have even considered before this suggestion. I think it works really well with the cream paint job......and I have gotten way more compliments than frowns.

You know when it gets right down to it lot's of different looks are OK with me.......these trucks have a lot of character.......and real characters' can have lots of different looks and still pull it off. If every one did the same treatment on their truck it would probably get boring. Of course you got to take what I am trying to say here with a grain of salt.....'cause as someone has already pointed out..... us Californians always have to be different. Amen to that.

You're welcome. That's the combo that was on the '48 Tudor I was doing so I knew it looked good.

When I get into colors, I go to Ace, or Lowes, or . .  and get some of their color schemes. They have the professional eyes and so that helps in not making a really bad choice. I've got a few cards taped to my suburban. I'm a bit older than most of you, so my taste corresponds to my age, especially since I'm going to keep the suburban for myself.

At present thinking blue and looking a rim/cap combinations.
