More on additives, short story fuel additives good, oil additives bad

I watched this several weeks ago and I like how the gentleman presented his information. It is amazing that none of these products in their literature actually describe how they enhance the oil in the engine. Also when he showed that they all separate after sitting and then do not really mix with the oil is another major concern.

At my local car club meeting i present a recap of this video and most people were taken back and they thought that these products did mix with the oil.  So all in all just the regular motor oil for our cars is the best.  Even in you literature and owners manuals for our cars there is nothing being stated that they prefer any certain product to enhance the oil.

I do like that he states the use of fuel additives to help keep the carbs and fuel lies clean and to keep the plugs clean.

In todays world a car that has regular oil changes and maintenance should at least get 150-200k miles with the electronic ignitions and all of the other enhancements in technology.

Two years ago my wife was a chase car when I drove my 39 Desoto from valley Forge Pa which is outside of Philadelphia Pa across the State of Pa via the Pa Turnpike to Altoona PA for the Desoto Convention and car show.

I was traveling around 50 mph and had no issues with truckers or other cars.  She was in a 2019 Honda CRV and was also doing 50MPG. We used the onboard fuel monitor and she was getting close to 45 MPG.  So, with our concerns of oil and gas production it just goes to prove that the lower mph is cost efficient instead of permitting cars and trucks to go 70+ mph and also consuming more oil and gas. I have found that when doing under 65 MPH i can average around 34-35 so slow down and leave maybe 15-30 earlier and conserve our limited supplies of the oil and gasoline products.

Back during that 55 MPH era I drove my '33 Plymouth cross country. That included driving from Dallas to El Paso. It was summer and I was having heat related fuel delivery issues if I drove faster than 40 MPH. It is a long, long, long way from Dallas to El Paso at 40 MPH.

One thing I recall is being passed by the same 18 wheelers multiple times. That caused me to take a close look at each truck stop and travel center as I rolled by it. Those same 18 wheelers were, apparently, stopping at every opportunity. Not sure why but the result was they were averaging the same 40 MPH I was doing.

Hard to watch but real test lab results.  Your belief systems may be challenged.

In my daily drivers, I try when I remember ..... I use seafoam in the tank as a preventive cleaner .... I have seen others have good results with it.

Also a firm believer that with moderate water in gas tank, 1 bottle of HEET will allow it to mix with fuel and burn through .... no instant gratification, next tank of clean fuel you notice it worked.

Only thing I would add to the oil is ATF, do a oil change and add 1 quart ATF and top off with regular oil ..... ATF is a excellent cleaner, it will clean your engine over time .... it is too thin to be used regularly, but a good cleaner.

Only thing that comes to mind, my 1951 F-2 ... 3/4 ton Ford that when approaching 55 the king pins would cause the death wobble and literally had to pull over to the side of road and start again ... It liked 50mph not 55.

Other then that, I hated 55 in my other cars, never did get a speeding ticket though.

The only additive I ever buy is Marvel Mystery Oil...but I don't add it to the oil or the gas. I use it as a "wake up" procedure for my cars after long term storage (eg.: over winter)

I squirt about 1 1/2 oz into each spark plug hole, and leave the plugs out.

Let it sit overnight.

Next day (plugs still out) I rotate the engine several times via the crank bolt, and let it sit overnight.

After 24 hrs I spin the starter with the plugs still out to expel any liquid (avoids hydraulic lock).

Install plugs, and fire her up.

In the past I have used a similar procedure to free up a stuck engine. Add a couple of ounces of MM Oil to each cylinder, let sit for a couple of days. Then gradually and gently attempt to rotate the engine (back and forth) via the crank. I once "unstuck" a flathead that sat outside for sixteen years without being started.

I get it for longer periods of non use but that seems like a lot of work for just a winter rest. I started my 48 this past weekend along with 5 other vehicles that hadn't been moved or started since last year. The only one that didn't start as if I had driven it the day before was the 69 sport fury. I had to tap the carb a few times to free up the needle valve
