Is there a spring that hold tension on the exterior door handles?

My drivers side handle is floppy and has too much play. It works but does not return to the horizontal position as the other do.

If it is like my P23 there is.  I have the same problem.  In my case, there are two springs in the door handle assembly, one that works the action back and forth, so to speak, and is readily available, it is a spiral wound coiled spring, see pic 1, I have some one hand.  Not what I needed as the second spring is what holds it level.  Not available that I know of short of doing what I did, buying used assemblies.  See pic 2.

An old trick, at least here in Oz where NOS parts were not easy to find was to place the handle in a bench vice at the very tip of the shaft then adjust a 10" shifter spanner to the exact width of the handle shaft then using an oxy torch to heat the shaft and with the shifter turn the shaft a few degrees to allow for the "wear" which sits the handle horizontal again..........no more brewers droop............a new spring would be a better solution but we did what we could back then..........andyd

Try Moparpro.com, I got some from them but haven't had time to install. Call as they have stuff that is not listed on their website.

Could you not make one using piano wire?

My SIL and I went down to Ace and they had similar springs on hand, but none of them were exactly right and we couldn't mod one to work.

Maybe the collective has a readily available solution?

Torsion spring. Maybe measure it up and look for an equivalent on Grainger or McMaster-Carr?

Yes, now that I have one that isn't broken I can see if I can find a working one.  Thanks for the name though, that will definitely help.

Oh dang, McMaster Carr will do made to order torsion springs based on a sample, I have three.

But I wonder what the McMaster Carr premium is?

Sometimes a thorough cleaning and proper lubrication of the entire door latch mechanism will solve that drooping problem.  That's what did the trick for our Terraplane and D24.

Thanks for the info.  I've used McMaster for a lot of stuff but never thought to look for torsion springs there.   Great info on the site about wire sizes, torque etc too.

I've got a floppy handle on my drivers door too,

I thought fixing the sagging door handle was rather simple.

Something future Fred needs to address some day ..... wont interfere with it running & driving now though.

Going to have to bookmark this thread as I will need to work on my handle.

When I first bought the truck it was difficult but could open the door from the outside. Now I just reach through the wing window to open it from the inside handle.

I need to take mine out for a good cleaning & see whats up.
