dr47 Posted May 21, 2019 Report Posted May 21, 2019 what model valve spring compressor will work on mopar 218-230 flathead , ? there are many models choices out there, thank you Quote
greg g Posted May 21, 2019 Report Posted May 21, 2019 (edited) Those that resemble large C clamp. This type works well, they can be had for less from different suppliers. https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/W89409/10002/-1?mrkgcl=1239&mrkgadid=3328190836&adpos=1o5&creative=330726016703&device=t&matchtype=&network=g&jegspromo=nonbrand&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIiIe6zN2s4gIVy7fACh2BqQPuEAQYBSABEgIkDvD_BwE Edited May 21, 2019 by greg g Quote
keithb7 Posted May 21, 2019 Report Posted May 21, 2019 I own one similar to this. It worked very well in my L6 Mopar engine. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Vintage-K-D-Kay-Dee-700-Valve-Spring-Compressor-Lifter-Adjustable-Jaw-KD-700/264323183533?hash=item3d8ae3b3ad:g:MnwAAOSwdllc245E Quote
kencombs Posted May 21, 2019 Report Posted May 21, 2019 I have one like this:Others also, but this is my favorite for flatheads. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 21, 2019 Report Posted May 21, 2019 (edited) Doing lotsa engines on a stand...big C-Clamp style. C-style is used on all common older engines pretty much...V-8"s , sixes etc. Doing valve work in the car...the smaller compact scissor type. Easier to use in that tight situation. Sniper Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 Well, today I tried to pull my valve springs. This wasn't cutting it on my stuck valves. Used Ebay purchase. Says Zimm Mfg Co pat pending, no PN anywhere. I ended up making it work by using a Channelock pliers to squeeze the handle. Either I am old and have no grip anymore, those guys back then had monster grips or the valve springs this is designed for is even weaker than what I have. So I went to the parts store to buy a C clamp style one. Not at Autozone, not at NAPA, not at the local mom and pop store, not at O'reilly's, not at Harbor Freight, I went everywhere in town I could think of. No dice, had to order one. This is getting to be monotonous. I could find these all over the place though. I already have two of these palm eaters and they won't work on a flathead anyway. Once I get it and use it I'll do a tool report on it for y'all. In perusing this thread a lot of people show what they use, but a make and part number would be nice for the rest of use to find one for ourselves. Quote
Bryan G Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 I bought one of the old K-D's on eBay. Well worth it. Sometimes in a tight spot (around the downpipe, if you don't have it removed) you can manage to use it upside down. Along with a valve keeper holder, the job isn't so bad. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 This style is only used on over head valves... Quote
Sniper Posted July 1, 2021 Report Posted July 1, 2021 Just now, Dodgeb4ya said: This style is only used on over head valves... Yes, I know that, as I mentioned they do not work on a flat head. 1 Quote
JBNeal Posted July 5, 2021 Report Posted July 5, 2021 I dusted off my valve spring compressor and found that it is a K-D Tools 383 Cam Type Compressor. To hold keepers in place, I dab some wheel bearing grease on the ID, then stick'm on the valve stem. additional information - flathead valve spring compressor 1 Quote

Sniper Posted July 6, 2021 Report Posted July 6, 2021 Thanks for the number gents, similar in concept to what I bought. I might get to the springs this week, if so I will do a tool write up. Quote
