the motor going back in.

2012-03-02_164001.jpg

the motor is a small block chevy that i installed.the car also has a two link rear suspension.so my intension for the for the car has always been to be a traditional custom. i have built this car in driveways flooded one car garages.now i finally have a nice garage to work in.i have no doubt cut corners as a means to an end. and i am for sure not happy about some of them.

so this leads us to last night. i told another friend of mine that i am probably going to sell the car this summer because i am not happy with the running gear of the car.and to go back now would call for a new frame and running gear.so he talked me off the ledge and that is my new plan.my car is a hardtop from the factory. so i will need a four door frame. i have located a a complete four door close by at a very reasonable price.

so now my question do you guys think i am crazy or is this a good idea. my plan is to put the car back together with the sbc and keep it on the road while i build the new frame.then swap them.sorry my post is a bit pick heavy and long winded i am pretty excited.

Glendale,

I mean this with no sarcasm or criticism when I say I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. You have a frame under the car now, right? You're going to run the same engine as is in it now, right? You don't care for the condition of the current body but you made it that way and you can make it any way you want, right? Why do you need a new frame and what are you going to do with it?

As I said, I am in no way trying to bash your project but I'm confused. Would you mind terribly getting into more specific detail of what you want the finished project to be? I'm not specifically asking for final details but are you going to start a second car while you drive the first car and then put the sbc in #2, leaving #1 without propulsion?

My '48 P-15 is stock because I want it that way and your car will be customized because that's how you want it, which is one of the beauties of this semi-masochistic hobby, and I'd love to be involved with your car from 1000 miles away just as soon as I know what you're doing.

i am sorry i rambled and did not outline the new plan. the new frame will have no bags no v8. pretty much stock i want to build a hopped up flat six most likely with a t-5 dual carbs and fenton headers. dropped uprights my disk brakes dropped rear leaf sprinngs and probably blocks in the rear.stock gas tank and floors. in the end a much nicer finished car.

AH HA! sure a hotted up 6 with 5 speed, and some modernized chassis bits makes sense, and driving what you got till its ready makes sense if you have the room, money and will.

I am going to look at it tomorrow. The guy says the motor it trash the head is off and its full of rats nest but the car is solid.

Sounds perfect! Enjoy!

1951-52 Belvedere's use a regular sedan type frame. The Plymouth converts used the reinforced X frame only.

Roseville had that show last year and it was awesome! I won't miss it ever. And my car has a regular frame but it's the length of a four door not a two door. I have owned no lees then six 51-52 plymouth i have seen a convertable frame and its for sure not that. Thanks for the heads up tho. Good looking out!

The 2dr and 4drs should have the same frame. Either should work for you if you don't have the X section the convertible has. Just stay away from the short wheelbase cars.

the car i had lined up fell through. i have a line on a 53 do you think they are the same?

no..the 53/54 frames went to a all model 114 WB...the 111 (Concord series) smaller frame and the large 118 frames were last used in '52..although the car has a shorter wheel base the frame is tad longer and much wider..

thanks tim.just to be clear?my car is longer then a wagon that is why i am looking for a four door.i really need to buy a shop manual.

yes..the Suburban, Concord and the business coupe are all of the 111 wheelbase frame...the two door and 4 door share the same frame P18, P20 and P23 will be the targets you want to get in your cross hairs..convertibles are out of the question..

Glendale, unless I am missing something the sidevalve 6 should fit straight in, the pic you show with the SBC shows that you still have the original chassis & front suspension..........just remove the SBC and get the 6 & install it.....as for the suspension/brake/steering upgrades.they will all work with/on the original style front end.......personally I'd be inclined to leave the SBC in it, run the corvette covers, a set of triple carbs, small air cleaners and a nice detailed engine bay and it will look fine, even bolt up a T5 so you have the o/drive .........and I have a 318 Poly in my 40 Dodge & a finned headed 230 six /T5 for the 41 Plymouth............theres nothing wrong with the SBC if you decide its what YOU want.............tell the TRAD POLICE to go screw themselves.........regards, andyd

When all is said and done Glendale, it's your car. Do want you want with it as long as it gets back on the road where it belongs. I have a '53 Ford F100 pickup that had the old (though admittedly not original) flathead V8 in it. I'm having it fitted with a sbc and 700-R4 overdrive auto, for reasons of reliability and cheap spares. I've had criticism for putting a Chevy in a Ford, but then people forget that huge numbers of Ford street rods have a sbc engine. My truck, my choice. :)
