JIPJOBXX Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Mr. Allen Swift (Springfield, MA.) received this 1928 Rolls-Royce Picadilly P1 Roadsterfrom his father, brand new - as a graduation gift in 1928.He drove it up until his death last year.....at the age of 102 !!!He was the oldest living owner of a car from new. Just thought you'd like to see it.He donated it to a Springfield museum after his death. It has 170,000 miles on it, still runs like a Swiss watch, dead silent at any speed and is in perfect cosmetic condition. (82 years)That's approximately 2000 miles per year... Quote
49 Dodge Dude Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Amazing! Now how cool is that? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 When I was growing up in a small Missouri town of about 5,000 there was an old man who drove a Model A. In the 1950s. I didn't know him, but I always used to think he got it new or nearly new. But I believe the above gentleman surely does hold the record. Quote
TodFitch Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 Pretty darned incredible. I'd have to keep my 1933 for only another 45 years to go to match his record. Quote
T120 Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 There's few vehicles manufactured today, imho, that will be worthwhile keeping or will last for that length of time.A nice example of automotive history Quote
JerseyHarold Posted December 16, 2010 Report Posted December 16, 2010 When I lived in Buffalo in the late 1970's, there was an old woman using a Model A as her daily driver. Based on her age (I got a real good look---she nearly ran me over with the car one day!) I'd have to guess she was the original owner. Quote
RobertKB Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 That is incredible and unlikely to be matched now or in the future. When I do the math he was 20 when he was given the car. Amazing. I have had my '53 Plymouth since 1975, so for 35 years. I got it when I was 26 so if I happened to live another 35 years or until I am 96, I would have owned it 70 years, still well shy of the 82 years of the gentleman with the Rolls. Quote
48ply1stcar Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 (edited) My mother paid $75 for my 48 Plymouth in 1968. I joined the Army in 1970 and retired in 1990. When I bought my mother's house which by then was a rental, my car was under a tarp beside the garage. I started working on the car in 95 and still haven't finished. Andydodge Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 I have owned my 1940 Dodge since September 1971, originally went to buy it as a parts car for the 1940 Dodge Coupe I'd had since May 1970 & pulled apart. When I saw the sedan it had current registration, was complete down to the owners manual & hubcaps but had some burnt out ignition wires........it was advertised for $40.00, when the guy answered the door at the address given he said.." oh man, you mean Sebastian, Sebastian the old car, man"............"err yeh"........"he's round the corner man........"....."err o/k"........we( my dad & I, as I wasn't old enough to have a drivers licence yet) went round the corner, met Sebastian(lol) and went back & offered $15.00.......which the guy accepted.......it cost $20.00 to have sebastian towed home by a tow truck........lol........anyway have attached a pic taken before I bought it of my 1940 Dodge Coupe that was published in an Oz magazine and a pic of the 4dr Sedan that I still own 39yrs later......andyd Quote
JerseyHarold Posted December 17, 2010 Report Posted December 17, 2010 I saw the ad for my '52 Cambridge the night I got my '51 business coupe in 1988. I jumped up so fast that the bathroom almost got a skylight! So those have been with me for 22 years. I also have a '66 Sport Fury convertible since 1985. It makes 25 years for that one. Time sure flies, doesn't it? Quote
