Arthur,

If I ever fly out to California, don't think I'll ask you to pick me up if that's where you'll take me to get something to eat. Not only would that clog your arteries, but there has to be a reason they call the place In-N-Out. Must be that they slide right out the other end.:D So.........I'll pass thank ya very much.:D

Norm,

It's a once in a while treat. If you're going to go for a burger this is the place. Their fries are made before your very eyes with real potatoes and the produce is fresh, also the patties have never been frozen. They also pay and treat their employees well.

Best.

I can't believe California serves food like that! I though it was all soyburgers and spout sandwiches.

When I visited my son in Mountain View, we looked all over for a place to get ice cream. The closest we could find was Gelato. In St. Louis, you have to drive past three ice cream places to get to your favorite ice cream place two blocks away.:D

And all this time I thought it was because California didn't sell food that was heart unhealthy!

Next time you are in Mountain View, go just into Palo Alto to Rick's Ice Cream. Its in a shopping center at the intersection of Charleston and Middlefield.

By the way, In-n-Out is not just in California. There is even one in the extreme southwestern tip of Utah. And there aren't all that many in extreme northern California.

See: http://www.in-n-out.com/locations.asp

As I understand it, they don't freeze their meat. They do their own meat processing. And they only have one meat processing plant which is in the LA metro area. So all of their locations are within a day's trucking range of LA.

Whenever I go to the US and have a burger at a restaurant, I am always amazed when they ask, "How do you want that cooked?" "Very well with no pink in the middle" is always my answer. I don't want to eat any hamburger that is pink as that is a big no no in Canada. Hamburgers should be cooked thoroughly. Steak is a different story and lots of people up here like it very rare. Not me, cook it well. Must be my English heritage.

#2 ANIMAL STYLE PLEASE!

IN-N-OUT is really a great old fashioned American Hamburger joint. Being a new comer to California, I love it. Compared to ANY other fast food joint IN-N-OUT TAKES THE CAKE! Always fresh, always friendly but not always fast. But that's because they are so good, the line can get long at lunch time. They have a drive through at most of them, which I never go through, idling in the 39 is not fun in southern cali...neither would the people behind me like the fumes...hahaha...before or after the food.

But does anyone have SLINGERS?!?!

as far as I know, it is a St. Louis delicacy. It typically has two eggs, hash browns, a hamburger patty all covered in chili. Breakfast of champions. Actually can serve for any meal!

We now have "Mighty Fine Burgers" where you can watch them grind the hamburger from Angus beef. They are always full, with two dinning rooms and an out door patio, can probably seat 200 people at lunch and in the evening. You have to stand in line to order, about 7 or 8 order takers. When I went to California in 2007 in the P 15 we ate at the in and out several times, I think Mighty Fine Burgers are just as good.

I miss In & Out burgers. On the TV news this week there was a big news story...

Abuquerque might be getting its first In & Out. We don't have one here in Southern NM though.

Back before the company re-designed its bumper stickers, the cool thing was to cut 'em up like the one in this photo:

Well.........personally, I like White Castles. Great little burgers. Don't have them here though. But..........every trip we make down to Louisville, KY we stop in Merrillville, IN for lunch at a White Castle on the way down. I usually eat about 5 of them, order of fries and a coke for lunch. I'm sure Niel probably knows just where I stop.

I made it a point to visit In-N-Out when I was in San Diego back in July. I was not all that impressed with In-N-Out. My visit to Jack in the Box was much more satisfying. I put In-N-Out on par of just a little better than McDonald's. I know some people really love the place, but I was woefully disappointed. The fries reminded me of stale canned french-fried potato sticks. I'll drive past an In-N-Out to find a Burger King. I know some folks in Texas really like What-A-Burger, but I put in on par of just a little below Burger King. My wife and I tend to visit Braum's if we see one when traveling.

It's all a matter of taste, but I don't recommend In-N-Out to any one traveling to that part of the US.
