The Phoenix is awakening / B3B Rises from the Ashes

Recommended Posts

Update: Put new shocks on the back this morning. I discovered that the smoke film, whatever you call it, is thick on the underside of the truck. I will have to lift it with a large forklift, soak it with a very good soap then steam clean/ pressure wash everything I can get to.. Then will have to remove the doghouse, dismantle it, clean, treat and protect so that is in the future.

Got a few details to attend to tomorrow then on Friday plan to drive it up to the Sequoia Redwood Trees. That is a 6,000 foot climb in 30 miles, a good test run. I'm confident all will be just fine.

Jeff, I did some additional sound proofing so will then know how that helped.

I headed up the grade to the mountains, after about 10 minutes of steady pulling th temp crept up to 212 and the oil dropped to 20 #. So I returned home, down hill,, the top came down and oil pressure returned to 40.  I put my finger in the water at 212 which wasn't boiling, so.  Will change the oil, check my thermostat and head up again. It was maintaining speed, not really lugging and I did not have the pedal to the metal. So maybe just in th adjustments.

Coming back home there was an evident continuing noise from the front. When I depressed the clutch and let the engine go idle, the sound remained. Tomorrow I will repack the front wheel bearings, change the oil in the transmission, and grease the U-joints. That, a new heat.gauge, and an oil change and I will head up the hill again. Got to get this truck highway dependable.

With the heat heat gauge showing 212 I removed the  radiator cap. The water was not boiling and I could momentarily put a finger in the water, so . . . Change the gauge. Can a gauge be adjusted.

Might be worth examining the thermostat. Could have some debris in it.

Jeff

Ya how hot did this thing get from the fire? Were the radiator hoses checked or replaced?

Paul the gauge is new since the fire right?

How hot? The plastic fuel filter did not melt, only one tire blew, fuel lines did not rupture, so the truck was surrounded by fire but not ON FIRE. Yet this winter the dog house will come off, fully disassembled, cleaned, treated, and reassembled.

I put  in new front wheel bearings and eliminated a noise I heard yesterday. I still have more motor noise than I want. I have sound deadening throughout the inside of the cab and a padded firewall insert, all holes plugged yet engine noise. (1) will replacing the OE fan with an electrical fan reduce much noise, (2) will new body mounts help, engine mounts are new. I've seen some put sound deadening on the engine side of the firewall, that should help I would think. Suggestions welcomed.

I've been researching noise and noise control. Several sources of noise: air flow, engine/ , exhaust, ,transmission, then road / , etc, tires, And door, window, fender, seals. What seals were between body parts are now smoke so will address that next/ soon. I do not need any radio!!!

I think when you do address the rest of the body concerns as the results from the fire damage...many of your noises will be remedied at the same time..as for the radio, I do not listen to radio either...I cannot stand DJ's and their drone...ads are wasted air time...all I need is the receiver amp and a few aux inputs for my various devices..

Sorry all the above is beyond me as soon as 8 track tapes came out , I never listened to AM radio and at that time FM was for the OLD generation with what they played!! That was if you has a AM-FM ratio in your car. Not so in my 64 GTO! Guess I am to young! I wish!!!

I still have my Panasonic car 8 track with optional AM and FM tuner slip in cartridges that still work.

To heck with all this high tech radio/GPS crap! I don't know how to operate any of it... and don't want to learn either:D

I have moved forward a bit....my trunk mounted remote receiver has many input for all the different media plugs and taps for three different amps..the USB port allow a thumb drive to mimic a 10 disc player...make for ability to carry some nice road tunes along with my mp3 player...am pretty much set to go..

A MP-what player??

Too new for me. A FM ratio with CD works well for me. As modern as I wish to get. Can blast the neighbors with tunes if I choose to. Two amps and a 12" bass speaker in the trunk!

Really want to entertain? Open the trunk lid!!  Crank it up to about 50% volume!!   :P

Anybody who knows me knows I don't get too excited about all this new fangled techno-crap......with one exception. My music is on I-pods the size of a matchbook. And it plugs right into my sound system. More than 2000 selected tunes on each tiny device and organized into playlists. Having whatever I want to listen to ....whenever I want it.....is one bit of technology I really like. Well worth the effort.

Last Tuesday, the 3rd I drove Phoenix to Kettleman City to have lunch with a suburban friend. I have been driving it often, but it needed a road test. KC is 60 miles from me. The truck drove great, cruised at 60+ mph, and drove straight as an arrow. His suburban has a small V8. He is from Bakersfield.  We had a lot of lookers and a lot of compliments. One looker is from Sanger, 10 miles from me, he has a totally Original 51 which is a driver. We'll be meeting again soon.

Still a cab noise challenge. I wonder if a lot is coming from my exhaust system. I have a stainless steel 'Dyna - Flow" muffler, maybe that sound is coming to the cab. I'm not certain about the name, but I think it gives a mellow sound, my ears don't know such sounds anymore. Got to reduce the sound before the BBQ April 1st.

I need to put my pictures into photobucket, sorry for now.
