pflaming
I seem to recall that some one gave a chimp a brush and a selection of paint colors, then placed the results at a prestigious art show and received high raves. Life is interesting!

Phil363
Phoenix’s This could have been placed as a recourse to the comments in 3rd Annual" but I want these pics here. The finish on this truck is very unique. I have yet to have someone say I should paint it. I have even had three body shop owners say in effect, ". . . protect it in a proper way, but do not paint it. There is only one way to get that finish and no one will burn down their garage to achieve it." So enjoy or critique, I do not mind either way. I will this winter do a complete resand under the guidance of a good body man, disassemble the doghouse to clean and protect the seams and joints, clear coat the entire truck properly and finally buff that out. That is what it deserves and what it will get. To be continued . . . I tend to read the forum(s) more for information on how to best repair a part like .. brakes, engine, transmission or electronics so far in my project .. not so much about painting or color selection. However, I have to admit though the Phoenix’s final appearance locked in under clear coat will be rather unique. With its history and survival written in each burned in swirl of color .... well I would probably not try to rewrite history in this case either

Plymouthy Adams
Dave, it would be esier to get out the propane BenzOmatic and hand design a true flame job...free hand your name, ooh ooh..Holstein cow with matching interior in black burnt splotches...true starvin' artiest fashion...personally I think the yellow CRIME SCEEN tape glue in place and clear coated is most appropriate ....... pflaming
Actually what you do is put various colors of masking tape designs on the surface and have areas covered with newspaper some print, some colored comic pages. Then torch it all off. The different thicknesses of the paper/tape will give different heat temps to the surface and look more realistic. DJ194950
Paul sounds like you are considering ideas for exterior finishes for the Suburban when you get the truck running reliably.. Masking tape, newspapers, comic books and gathered cat fur glued on and they get a real flame job (BenzOmatic?) and then cleared?

pflaming
The cat's revenge? Been struggling with small but very troublesome electrical issues. Today I checked out every component, switches, alternater, battery, alternator regulator, starter solenoid, and yet issues. So I went back to the ammeter and started to follow wires. What a shocker: loose wires EVERYWHERE! I swear "Tim's phantom cat" has been under the dash loosening screws! A lot of the switches under my dash are new which means they all connect by screws not bullets or spades. Is it possible that the vibration of the dash can work a wire and thus work a screw loose? I would guess so if one is just a little loose, but all of them? I still have my oem light switch and may return to it because of the bullet connections. I have changed to 12 volt, added the alternator, a car solenoid starter, a fan on the dash and a tach so the complexity changed. Just a small change impacts all sorts of things. I will triumph but what a frustration. Edited May 7, 2015 by pflaming

TodFitch
Paul; Have you used a serrated washer at each screw terminal? Jeff For what it is worth, the '28 through '33 master parts book calls them "shakeproof" washers. I'd call them star washers, either internal or external depending on where the teeth are, but yes: If you have screw terminals you need to have shakeproof/serrated/star washers under the nut on each and every one. pflaming
Spent the day on my back under the dash installing serrated washers. After installing quite a few I noticed that one side is smooth the other is not. So then it started installing with the smooth side down. I reasoned that the rough side up would better grip the screw. Is that the correct position? Chaucer was interesting and challenging but never as frustrating as being a novice mechanic and working on an old truck. Should wrap this up tomorrow. Got an interior to redo next. pflaming
Quiet Ride sound deadening and insulation: there is some small areas to clean up but the biggest areas are now covered. Quiet Ride uses Duramax for their deadening and a 3/8" woven glass back to the foil for the insulation. I also used some of Lowes gutter sealer and it appears to me that it is so close to Duramax in thickness that I can not justify the Duramax cost again. I pre-painted the insulation as a frugal way to delay the upholstery. I also have a sound barrier firewall insert from QR. It fits very nicely. The floor is sound proofed as well. The cab now is so quiet I can't hear myself think but then I can't hear much else either. Everyday do something even if it isn't much.
