Jeez we have not had weather like this in a while

Last night was windy and cold here in mid ohio. Looking at the swing set chains now, and they are almost completely horizontal. The drifting is terrible. I think if I were to blow it out it of the driveway it would be back within several minutes. I called work to see if anyone else had made it in. Just one guy made it in and he said he's stuck there now because the lot is not plowed out. Roads are terrible and many are not plowed. Sounds like It's a good day just to stay home I think.

DC stay home until the wind stops, and main roads are plowed. Don't bother clearing snow until the drifting stops. Thats like following kids as they make a mess from room to room.

We had lots of that last year and some this year. I do believe North America is having one of it's coldest snowiest winters on record..

Fourteen below last night, minus nine right now.  I-65 is closed from here to Lafayette.  I-80 & 94 is closed from the Illinois line to Michigan City.  Electric railroad is down its entire length from South Bend to Chicago.  Reckon I'll watch some TV.

My sister and nephew came up to WI for the Packer game yesterday and now they can't get home to Indy due to the road closures. Thought about going down I-39 to I-74 and over, but not sure about the condition of those roads either.

My outdoor thermometer read -24°F when I got up this AM and right now it's a HIGH of -15° and we have about 15-20 MPH winds....WINTER!  But I'm toasty warm with my new coat and gloves (BTW if you see a commercial for the Omni-heat reflective coats....they are true...such a nice coat!)

Thanks Neil. Doesn't look too promising for her. I haven't heard from her since this morning, so I don't know where she is now. May be visiting the in-law's in Milwaukee area yet, waiting for the roads to clear.

At 4:10 p m (Mon) here in southwest Missouri, (Joplin) the temp is 6 above with a wind chill of -12.

All the schools were closed today as well as many cancellations of churches and other events.

Have simply stayed in the house yesterday and today.   Went out to the detached garage and

turned on the heat to about 45 degrees.  Probably should have done that yesterday......but I

don't think anything in there totally froze up.  It tends to stay warmer in there than you think, as

it's insulated including the attic and has good windows as well as an insulated door.

These metal shelves I got at Sam's Club are pretty sturdy and hold quite a bit.  I need to again

go through containers and re-organize stuff in them so I know better what I have.  Been trying to make

lists to attach to tubs with a variety of things in them so I can just read instead of digging thru.

Yeah, Don........too bad I can't Photoshop it in for now.   Dale sent a phone picture this evening.......is

attaching the new hood lacing on the firewall.

And......that's an early picture of the shelves, etc.   More stuff there now.....getting more properly messy.

Keeping the Caravan in there for now.  Have added things like a new riding mower, garden cart (3), two

push mowers, yard furniture for the winter........and that "extra space" is about used up.

Just notice this in the morning's "forecast discussion" where the real, live human weather service forecaster puts out notes on what they see happening and why they posted the weather forecast they did. This is for the SF Bay area but has, I think, general interest:

FROM THE PREVIOUS SHIFT...ROSSBY WAVE THEORY SUGGESTS WHEN A

STRONG RIDGE IS IN PLACE OVER THE WEST COAST AN EQUALLY STRONG
TROUGH WILL BE IN PLACE OVER THE EASTERN HALF OF AMERICA. THUS
WHILE THE BAY AREA AND MOST OF CALIFORNIA HAVE SEEN A WARM AND
MILD JANUARY MUCH OF THE EAST COAST HAS BEEN BRUTALLY COLD AND
SNOWY. RELIABLE CLIMATE DATA RECORDS IN DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO GO
ALL THE WAY BACK TO 1850 WHILE MADISON WISCONSIN HAS CLIMATE
RECORDS BACK TO 1871. ON JANUARY 6TH 1887 DOWNTOWN SAN FRANCISCO
SET A RECORD HIGH OF 73 DEGREES THAT STILL STANDS TODAY WHILE ON
JANUARY 7TH 1887 MADISON WISCONSIN FELL TO -29 DEGREES WHICH STILL
REMAINS A RECORD LOW. IN JANUARY OF 1887 DOWNTOWN SF RECEIVED 1.90
INCHES OF RAIN WITH NEARLY ALL OF IT FALLING IN A TWO DAY WINDOW
FROM JANUARY 18-19. LITTLE OR NO RAIN FELL THE REST OF THE MONTH.
SO WHAT HAPPENED IN FEBRUARY OF 1887 IN DOWNTOWN SF? 9.24 INCHES
OF RAIN FELL (ALONG WITH 3.7 INCHES OF SNOW ON FEB 5TH). NOT HARD
SCIENCE HERE FOLKS BUT STILL HOPE AS MANY OF OUR READERS ARE
ACHING FOR RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW.

Interesting to read that this Rossby Wave Theory indicates that the weirdly warm and dry weather we've been having in California is directly related to the stormy and cold weather you've been having back east.

For what its worth, no rain in our forecast for the next week or so although a couple of "inside sliders" could give some moisture just a little ways inland.

According to that theory, San Francisco should have mid to upper 60's today since I had -17 at 7:00 AM here in southern WI.  School was closed yesterday and today.  Businesses were not and the garbage and recycling trucks came around this morning, right on time, as well as the postal car.

Forecast high for San Francisco today is 63°F (call that mid-60s). About what I'd expect for May or June in a "normal year".

I woke up 5 AM this morning to a temperature of 1 degree F. Now a few minutes after 2 PM and the temperature is now 13 degrees F. In the 14 years I have lived in Tennessee it has never been this cold. There is a dusting of snow on the ground that has been her for 3 days now. Usually the show is gone by the afternoon.

0f right this minute, suns going down, calm outside, temp closer to freezing point ina few days,a needed break for us...

I made it in to work today at about 9 am. The shop was cold and neither paint booth would fire up. The first thing I did today was wet sanding with cold water. About 11 am I wished I'd just stayed home. Didn't get much accomplished until I made it home this afternoon to guess what..... snow blow my driveways. I had a drift 4'-5' deep x 20' long and another 15' wide. It took me 2 hour just to break through the drift. But my truck is free now and we now have two vehicles again. My shoulders are killing me. Can't imagine what they will feel like tomorrow. Sounds like a heat wave is coming and going top bring 21 degrees. Whoopee!!!!

-5 in Buffalo tied the record for Jan 7 set back in 1942, colder further south. "Only" -3 at my digs in Wheatfield. Wind chill was about -25 and we had what the weather folks said was a true blizzard - wind over 35 mph and snow. First one in 10 years. The NY Thruway (I-90) is still closed from Rochester to Buffalo, and from Buffalo to Pennsylvania. I-81 is still closed from Watertown to Mexico (there's a little town named Mexico north of Syracuse, and a little town named Texas right next to it). Most communities in western NY are still under driving bans. Most of that should be lifted today sometime. Funny that we were discussing lake effect snows just recently, I maybe got an inch or two at my place in southern Niagara County, Buffalo's "southtowns" and points south got pounded. Hard to measure snowfall with that much wind, but they're saying up to 2 feet in places.

Monday the temps were in the -20's, Friday low 30's....hows that for a 50° heat wave?  ;)

My wife was scheduled to fly out of the Buffalo airport yesterday. Flight was cancelled. She has re-scheduled to fly home Friday. I hope she makes it this time. Temperature this AM in Tennessee is 15 degrees F.

Same today as yesterday, -17.  The daily started better today than yesterday though (sits outside).  I've been leaving the battery tender on it overnight so the battery may have been a bit warmer and the cranking amps up from yesterday.  I've been through these cold spells a couple times now.  It wasn't that many years ago that the temps had stayed below zero that when the weather broke and it got above zero for the first time in almost 30 days it was a very welcome relief and did really feel like a heat wave.

She should have no problem, supposed to be "toasty" by Friday. High of almost 40, light winds, and cloudy with light snow in AM.

As I post this, weather is extremely odd here in Southern Manitoba, we border Minnesota and ND to the north, in case any of you don't know.

This morning about -8f, right now, close to 40 f, some high winds, a bit of snow, and rain, and even a chance of thunderstorm activity. I have not heard any thunder or seen lighting here in winter in many many years, so it's rare in this part of North America
