JIPJOBXX Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 A friend of mine who is clearing out a bunch of his fathers stuff gave this to me. His father was a automobile mechanic but I cannot figure out for the life of me what this would be used for? It has a small cable that is attached inside that alumium housing and reels out back and forth. Jon Quote
greg g Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 looks like a fish wire for pulling electrical wires throug conduit. Quote
mrwrstory Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Ya, a key ring holder. Should be a clip on the back for attaching to your belt. A lot of folks with a wad of keys had them especially when needed for work. I think the janitor at my grade school wore one. I associate them with dungerees and bib overalls. Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 It's not a steel for pulling wire through conduit. Though it does look like something you would use for holding keys, I would think the fact that it is string rather than a cable would rule that out. Also, the clip on the does not look strong enough to hold keys nor does it look like you could clip some fishing tool on it such as fly fishermen use. That clip looks like it would be for something very specific. Quote
TodFitch Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Was there a plumb-bob located near this item?... Might be a cord for hanging one. Or maybe a level line string. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted May 31, 2011 Author Report Posted May 31, 2011 The cable is metal and looks to be like copper? Quote
Tom Skinner Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Perhaps a Hood Release Cable Return Spring Mechanism? (When One pulls the Hood Release in the Cab, then this devise would have returned the Cable to its correct waiting position)???? Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Need more pictures of the back side and all angles. Quote
Martin53Cranbrook Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 i might be way off but it almost looks like an old school straight line tool, kinda like the chalk lines contractors use these days. Quote
1941Rick Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Tool for doing frame alignment?......key chain would work too... Quote
greg g Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 I guess the description of it being a cable rather than a string is what got me thinking it was a wire snake. Being that it is string and doesn't seem to have been subjected to chalking, my new guess would be a for use with a string level like usen in masonary jobs where you establish two level points a distance apart. Niel Hoback Posted June 1, 2011 Report Posted June 1, 2011 Now yer talkin'. That hook looks like its made for use on a nail. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 I think it has to do with determining the weight of a copper clapper. I believe that Sgt Joe Friday may have used such a device during his investigation of the famous Copper Clapper Caper..... Quote
Greenbomb Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 Early prototype Yo-Yo? Still had a few bugs to work out. Quote
Big_John Posted June 5, 2011 Report Posted June 5, 2011 It's a tool or load balancer. I've seen these used many times although this is an old one. This would hang over a bench or work station and a often used tool (usuallly like a power screwdriver) would hang off it. The weight of the tool is counter-balanced by the spring. There may be an adjustment screw to change the tension. Quote

"Now let me see if I got the facts straight here... Cleaning woman Clara Clifford discovered your clean copper clappers kept in a closet were copped by Claude Cooper, a kleptomaniac from Cleveland. Now is that about it?" Edited June 5, 2011 by kbuhagiar Just the facts, ma'am Quote
