DollyDodge Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 I finally got brave and took my old truck our for a long trip, well if 50 miles total counts as long. Anyway she did well. Go to if you want to see a short video I shot from the cab. If you play it to the end you will see my smiling face. It was a fun day. I attached a couple of pictures from the day. One of the truck on East Side Road, east of Bishop looking back toward the west at the Sierra Nevada, another is of me in front of the truck at my parents home. Quote
Mario Loya B1B Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Congratulations! By the way, I really like the patina on your truck! Quote
DollyDodge Posted July 26, 2010 Author Report Posted July 26, 2010 Thanks, glad you like the look. I hope some day to paint her, but for now the patina adds character. Quote
TodFitch Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Nice video. I like the whole thing but when that old Chevy in the opposite lane goes by there is a real vintage feel to it that is great. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 That's quite the grin. You were obviously enjoying the ride. Glad to see it's running good for you. By the way, where's your speedo? Quote
DollyDodge Posted July 26, 2010 Author Report Posted July 26, 2010 I was having a grand ride for sure. The old chevy was coming back from a vintage car show that was held as a fund raiser for the local fire department in my community. I am glad someone spotted that old car. I was going to take my old truck to the show, but when I pulled up all of the other cars were completely resotored. I wasn't too sure my old beast would be appreciated, so I decided to go for a long ride instead. Quote
ggdad1951 Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 By the way, where's your speedo? I was going to ask the same thing! Musta been speeding! Quote
Bradley S. Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Excellent video! Why is it that driving a Pilothouse makes you grin real big? I have that same problem. Brad Quote
DollyDodge Posted July 26, 2010 Author Report Posted July 26, 2010 Merle: I forgot to mention about the speedo. I took it out and lubed it like you said, I also cleaned the cable up (but still have to get it lubed). I will put it back once I get my wiring issues fixed. Once I lubed the speedo it workes great. I hooked up the cable and put a drill on it and ran it up to 50 mph with not problems. When working on the wiring I figure the less cables under there the easier it is to get around the wires! Does 40-45 mph classify as speeding? Quote
DollyDodge Posted July 26, 2010 Author Report Posted July 26, 2010 PS. having those two holes open (speedo and speaker) sure make it easier to reach and and work on the wiring. Quote
greg g Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Pay not attention to the shiney paint of common cars and trucks. A truck with character like your's has tells a story or hard work, and your dedication in making it driveable again. Go to shows, I bet you will get a lot more attentioin than the fiberglass ford withthe chevy engine. And 50 miles is an accomplishment that your grin attests to. Keep her running and driving, 50 miles is half way to 100 let her have her head and go somewhere. Quote
pflaming Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 I have always been under the opinion that those are TRUCK shows not PAINT! When I am road worthy and state legal I am heading for Carmel, CA and their big concours show. Going to go early enough to park just outside the gate! Quote

I wasn't too sure my >old beast would be appreciated, Back in the spring I took my 48 (Which has more patina than yours) to a Corvette show. My wife was the president of the club, there were about 200 Vettes there. She asked why I was taking that. "Cause I can!" Guess which vehicle got the most attention? It wasn't made of fiberglass! 48Dodger Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 Looks great DD! Its funny to see all the related links in the sidebar are Dolly Parton. Makes sense, kinda looks like an opening to a country song... 48D Quote
Jim Roach Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 Looks like you were having a blast. Did anyone check out the 56 Nomad that passed at the one minute mark? Quote
dontknowitall Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 It sounded like such a smooth ride.... she was purring.. Quote
DollyDodge Posted July 27, 2010 Author Report Posted July 27, 2010 My old girl is purring really nice these days. Kind of cracks me up how well she sounds. It will be a year on August 1 since I first tried to start her after sitting for 31 years. It has been a fun year for me with lots of learning. Given what some of you said below I guess I should have taken her to the show. This fall there is another car show here in Bishop, maybe I will take her to that one. My goal is for my 60th Birthday (6 years from now) I want to drive her to North Dakota, one of the few states in the US I haven't made it to. If we make it that far, I may try for the east coast and back home. It might be too lofty of a goal, but that is what I am shooting for. I have lots of work to do on her in the coming years, but I am sure we can at least make the ND trip. Quote

DollyDodge Posted July 27, 2010 Author Report Posted July 27, 2010 that is my intent, to stop and see people I have met on here, and to see other friends I haven't seen in a long time. It is a fun goal to think about. Quote
KJ's Dodge Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 (edited) On the video there were three cars that passed you going the other direction. If you were to edit out the new sedan that passed, you wouldn't know if you took the footage in this decade or the last time the truck was ran. I have grinned like that. DollyDodge Posted July 27, 2010 Author Report Posted July 27, 2010 I think everyone who gets one of these old beasts running and driving grins like I did. It is lots of fun. I need to get some video editing soft ware, but right now I can't, or at least I don't know how to edit video on my computer. Quote
PatS.... Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 I love the puurr of the old gal, and the fact it doesn't wander at all. The patina is the best part. Never hesitate to take it to a show. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the positive reaction you'll get!!! Hey, if you make the trip, do it in July and stop in to Calgary for the Stampede!!! Quote
DollyDodge Posted August 3, 2010 Author Report Posted August 3, 2010 We have another local car show this fall, I think I will take my truck to that show and see how it goes. Quote
