important retirement message OT

Recommended Posts

Today, Aug 31 I retired and yesterday my wife of 46 years passed away. She had been after me to retire a year ago but I hung in there for a few more dollars towards my pension. My message here is that when you reach a point in your life that you can retire and both you and your wife or husband can retire and be together, DO IT. We just don't know what is ahead.

I am extremly fortunate in the fact that we had a great marriage and enjoyed each others company.

I am saddened to hear such news..my sympathies for sure...as for your message..loud and clear...I am now approaching 2 years past my retirement eligibility..sad part is that the wife will have to work another 10 years for her retirement..I know I would go stir crazy at home by myself regardless of the amount of work to do about the house, yard and shop...I do not have a neighbor that shares anything like an old car hobby either..

John,

My condolences to you an any other family member. Life passes us all to quickly. We all need to cherish those special moments together and remember the great times that you and your wife had together.

Keep her in your thoughts for this will help you get through this time in your life.

So sorry to hear of your great loss. All our best thoughts go to you and the rest of your family. My wife's father met a similar fate some years ago,he passed away about 2 months after he retired.

The pain of loss will be considerable and may last a terribly long time, but the good memories will last forever, celebrate them when they come around.

John, sorry to hear of your loss. Condolences to you and your family.

This is my final day at work....official retirement date Sept 1.

We plan to do as you suggested......we have already discussed several things

we can do, trips to take, people to see, etc. Because, it's true, you

don't know which day might be the last. Bob

Our deepest sympathies go out to you John for your loss.

You are so right about taking retirement to enjoy each others company. My older brother just passed away July 15th. Became ill the end of April and spent from beginning of May until he died in the hospital. Was only 66. He could have retired last year, but........he said he wanted to keep working as long as he was able to. Said he'd miss getting up and going to work each day. So, he too missed out by not retiring when he could have.

You are so right about enjoying each others company. That's why my wife and I try to take trips, etc. each year, since 1989, regardless of what else is going on around us. That way we'll always have memories. I'm sure you have many memories of your own too. As mentioned, those will always be there for you.

My deepest sympathies. I'm almost 38--not married (yet, at least)...and am still dealing with the unexpected death of my father in February. Every time I open the hood of the '41 P-11, I can see my father working on it. I would also echo other posters: enjoy each day you have with a spouse/parent/loved one.

My condolences. I was just thinking of my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother yesterday when I heard "When I Get Where I'm Going" by Brad Paisley on the radio.

My wife and I (despite 30 & 36 respectively) have had the retirement discussion. From my wife's family history and my own. It is highly likely that I won't be able to retire (need to save enough to live past 110, great-grandfather lived to be 97) before she passes (no one in her family has ever made it to 70). Her father is pushing the odds for his family, he's likely to be the first man in his family to reach 60.
