randroid Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 Gents, I have no taste when it comes to colors so I turn to you in what may be the silliest post I've ever written. I'm going to paint my '48 P-15 two-tone; light green and dark green. Since I made that decision I've assumed the light color would go on top, but recently I've noticed that some of the classics from our era (Bentley springs to mind) always have the darker color on top. I'm not going to start painting tomorrow but I am finding myself in a bit of a quandary as to which way I prefer, so what are your opinions? I'll paint it the way I want but I could use a nudge qne direction or the other. Thanks, -Randy Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 personally I like the lighter color on top..and the P15 has nice cut lines where the hood, roof and lid and about the door glass can be light and the lower a bit darker.. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 For one example of a two tone, here is Anthony B's car. Quote
RobertKB Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 I like the P15's a solid colour but if you are going two tone I would put the lighter colour on top. I have seen cars done both ways but think with the lighter colour on top your car will literally be cooler. My '53 is two tone green with the lighter colour on top. It still wears the factory paint. I think the cars from the '50's and 60's lend themselves better to two tone paint jobs. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 since the introduction of masking tape there has not really been a reason not to go two tone..even triple if you dare..Norm..I bet even your cave paintings are at minimum red and black Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 How about a two tone front to back? Dark in front feathered to light in back. Or the opposite. Ghost flames dark to light or the opposite? Whatever turns your crank Quote
randroid Posted June 22, 2009 Author Report Posted June 22, 2009 Bob, That's the photo that inspired me to go with green and I may still go that pattern, but I still think the other way might be more 'dignified', for lack of a better word. I dunno. Norm, I also very much like a single color on our cars. I decided on two-tone because because I think the old girl deserves to 'stand out' in the crowd. That's not to say that a single color would not turn every head but I want the challenge of seeing how well I can meld the colors on a body that, as you mentioned, does not lend itself well to the concept. Gents, Once I locate a picture of what I have in mind I'll post it, and in the meantime I'll brush-up (read: learn) Photoshop. -Randy Quote
Captain Neon Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 Randy, Knowing that you want to stand out more than any other P15, I recommend dark on top and light on the bottom. Most P15 two-tone schemes that I have seen involve light on top and dark on the bottom. Light on the bottom may also hide some more visible body imperfections and road dust better. I thought I stood out enough with my grey P15 when I was in Loveland, but that's just me. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 I like the lighter color on top as the lighter color reflects heat and darker color collects the heat. Dennis:cool: Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 I like the lighter color on top as the lighter color reflects heat and darker color collects the heat. Dennis:cool: I second that.Tom Quote
JerseyHarold Posted June 22, 2009 Report Posted June 22, 2009 I think that darker-on-top two-tones were used more frequently by GM. Personally I like the darker color on the lower part of the car. Quote
anthonyb Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Randy, As the guys have already said, the lighter color on top does make it cooler. I used to drive my beast to work every day and after sitting out in the Texas sun for 10 hrs a day it got a bit warm inside. 4-30 A/C doesn't work around here in August. I had mine painted all the dark green and when I went with the lighter top color, it cut at least 15 degrees off the inside temps. The pattern is not original but there aren't too many folks around here who would know, much less care. As has been said many times before, "Your car - Your way!" AnthonyB Quote
Niel Hoback Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 I think a lot of dark on top makes a car look somehow top-heavy. Especially if its near half light and half dark, not just a dark roof. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Whats wrong with my car Greg!!! Jim Quote
pflaming Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Would like to see someone photoshop a two tone with only the very top in a different color. The area that starts just below the windows. On a coupe that might give a 'convertable' look. Then go light green on the bottom and deep green or soft black on the top. Or to keep Frankie happy use Texas A & M colors, witch are cream and wimpy red! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 I was waiting for the taxi to show and how about the black and silver car..that is a beaut also.. Quote
Jims50chrysler Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 It's Ok Greg...I was only kidding, it is not my car but it reminds me of the time that at a party I mentioned about this goofy Neon running around town with the cheesiest flames you ever seen....the fella sitting opposite me was her father and he painted it!!! you could hear nothing but crickets and bullfrogs for a few minutes after that. moose Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 I've got two 2-tones One light on top and one dark. Neither is a p-15. I go both ways, I guess... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 not a P15, however both my P15's if I ever get to them will get two tone paint jobs..this is my 54..slight variation on cut lines and color..the dark blue is stock..the powder blue is my substitute for the not so color Pasedena Gray..
