47heaven Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Yesterday, I thought I would try something that I had been pondering on for a while, which was adding some red pin striping on some of the stainless dash trim. I had seen the idea in a car magazine with another P15 that had the same pieces pin stripped, and I thought it looked pretty good. I'm just trying it out with the car model pin strip to see how I like it, and maybe see how others like it or not. I think the red pin strip against the gray dash helps bring it out and also gives it a look that Plymouth "could have " done back then. Anyway, here are some pics: See what you think and give some feedback on whether I should keep it or scratch it. PS: I know it's not original, and I know I have made comments before about staying original, but I think it looks like something that could have been part of the dash in the 40's, since Chevrolet and Ford has red lines and script on their dash pieces then. steveplym Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Looks really good to me. I never thought about doing that, but it's a good idea. Maybe do the stripes vertical on either side of the "Plymouth" script, on top of the dash too. Quote
47heaven Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 Maybe do the stripes vertical on either side of the "Plymouth" script, on top of the dash too. Yeah, that was also shown in the magazine, but I wasn't sure if it looked like too much red or not. I can probably give it a try and see how it looks. Quote
JohnS48plm Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I like it. The red gives the dash a little color. JohnS Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I'd stick with just the horizontal stripes, the verts will make it look too busy. Just my 0.2 cents, the economy you know:) Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I've always said, it's your car do what you want, original or not. Since you ask for an opinion though here's mine. I like the dash the way it was without the red in the stainless. I like the nice clean look and the stainless nice and bright without the paint. I see the dash isn't wood grained either. But........again, I like the solid color. Looks nice. Steering wheel looks good that color too. But........like I said, it's your car and if you like the red stripes, then by all means you should leave it that way. Quote
busycoupe Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I think that it looks good. The red lines really set off the light gray dash. It reminds me of the stripes they used to put around the tops of the Texaco stations designed by Teague. The dash of the D24 has red letters on the chrome of the glove box that says "fluid drive." The red and chrome really makes it interesting. Quote

Don't know if that's possible or not. The main reason it's not wood-grained is because the extra 2-3 grand isn't there to do it. I was also thinking of trying it with maybe just one red stripe instead of three...or maybe a finer line. Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Check out David Maxwells gray wood grained dash with a Raiders emblem in the circle, he did it for a friend and it looks good! Quote
IronMike Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I say it is your car and do as you wish.... That said, I think that it looks sweet...... it is clean and classic. While maybe not factory original, it has a "period" feel to it. Cool..... Quote
pflaming Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I like it! Might even look good in the color of that great steering wheel color or the color of the car's exterior. Lot's of creativity in this idea. What is the name of the color on the steering wheel? Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 What you really need to do is forget the stripes and adjust your shifter linkage. Your gearshift looks like it is pointing to the floor. It should not do this. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 I think the red stripes should be a little narrower.....let the chrome show a little more. Just my 2 drachmas worth. P.S. I'm with Don.....your shift lever looks like it hangs too low. Quote

Yeah...it's been like that since I've had it, but have never known exactly what the proper position would be in 1st and 3rd. Right now it's at about 5 o'clock. Quote
47heaven Posted January 3, 2009 Author Report Posted January 3, 2009 I think the red stripes should be a little narrower.....let the chrome show alittle more. Just my 2 drachmas worth. I was actually looking for narrower tape, but didn't have any luck. I got that at Pep Boys. It really needs to be painted in professionally. I don't have the steady hand for it anymore. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 If your hand is not steady enough to use a brush for painting the stripes, try a paint pen. Those come in various point thicknesses, fine, medium and heavy. They are easy to find. Just go to any craft store and you get them in any color you want. Also, keep in mind. Paint doesn't bond that well to stainless or chrome finishes. So.........if you mess up you can just wipe it off before it dries. If you mess up and it's dried, just use a little SOS or Brillo pad with water and just gently wipe it off. It won't scratch the stainless or chrome finish. The paint will just peel off. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 try three o:cclock in the neutral position...that way it is equal shift post first or of the H pattern... Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 This is a normal first gear position. Quote
RobertKB Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Don, when did you revert to a three-on-the-tree? Quote
thejackrabbit Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 WOW! That is fabulous. I am impressed. We just don't see vintage cars in that condition in rural northern New Mexico, except for the occaisional Low Rider. That is a major accomplishment. Quote
RobertKB Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 That is a pre T-5 picture. I kinda figured that. Just teasing. Quote
greg g Posted January 3, 2009 Report Posted January 3, 2009 Personally, as a Deluxe owner, I find the Special Deluxe dash to be a bit busy as it is. Adding the stripes takes it way over the top for my taste. Quote
John Mulders Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 I like it, though with another color of the dash I think it would be different. Think vertical stripes may make it too busy (as said by another member). John Quote
Normspeed Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 I think I would do just the center groove red. More of a thin red line look. Quote
