  1. Chlorine is not good but neither is other sources, in many cases because well or river water also can have a lot of minerals not the best for an engine. Most replacement radiator co.'s recommend distilled water. Don't forget antifreeze even if you live where thats not an issue as antifreeze also has rust inhibitors/ lubricants etc. My two cents. Doug
  2. My low mileage rebuilt engine leaks at the replaced pan gasket (leaked since the rebuild). Since I installed this engine about a year ago i've since followed this forum and found out per Don C.'s post to NOT trim the overwide gaskets for the front and back- my mistake #1. Now planning on replacing the pan gasket and also noticed that the rear main side seals for the rear main also are sticking out on the pan gasket surface about 1/8" plus per side right at the 90 degree junction -maincap/engine pan surface. Q., was this mistake #2 and should have been trimmed off cleanly?? Seem s to me that the cork gasket would not be able to fit into 90 bend and wrap over the 1/2 round end of the seals also.? Don, since you said you only use a sealer on one side the the surfaces, can I assume that was with the gasket to pan with only a small amout of silicone sealer at the 90 bends on the top side for the main caps?? Thanks, I did some searching (about 1 hr.) on the seals but decided to try to not spend several days to find out this one detail on the search. Best to ya, Doug
  3. Interesting product. Ideas on a cost for just the tools for just 1 head bolt hole Tim? Thanks Doug
  4. Those cars were just beamed down from the flying saucer at the very front over the building! Very modern cars they were!!
  5. I've got a new alum. radiator in my 50 4 dr. running 7lb. cap for over a year with no problems, tried to get a 4lb. cap for it but napa didn't have a 4 lb. to fit the filler neck of the new radiator. Radiator like that will handle a 16 lb. cap but the motor? I didn't want to try it! Doug
  6. I remember my years in S.C.back in the early70's! Rain at least twice a day! Only good thing was the humitity would drop from 90%+ to maybe 70% plus a wind! Actually felt good to be outside for a short time until the humitity went back to 90%+ again! Whenever you travel throught states that are very green in the summer, you can safely assume that it rains alot during the summer and probably gets humid! Trade outs?? I did get used to it, no problem 2nd. year down there! 1st. year totally sucked!! I'm getting old these days and don't like temps over 95 and less that 60? But thats not to many sometimes in central ca. I"M lianing! Gets 110 to 30's ! Humity seldom an issue-FOG well that's another wintertime story! Doug
  7. He's getting it done while we are still thinking about what to do? Doug
  8. I have both parts an repair manuels that cover my 50 Ply. Repair mamuel 46-50, parts 1950 for all mopars ! many pics of parts Not shown in other manuels! Hollender reprint parts exchange manuel also very helpful covers 46-56 all brands, excellaant reference. Worth the money spent. Expand search parameters for parts needed and better prices?! My 2 cents! Doug
  9. Me thinks Tod was joking?? Doug
  10. Might try: A&A standard transmission 1211 s. wilson wy, Stockton,ca 95205 209-466-2764 Jim-owner (very old guy-but helpful) They told me recently that they still stock rebuild kits and parts for 3 spd.. mopars plus some OD trans parts. Give them a call, they told me take gears that just had a slight rounding of gear edges can just be rounded over and cleaned up with a file, no need to replace the gear. Plus I had some slight rust in one tranny and was told just to bead blast and if not pitted really badly they would work fine. Does that sound like a place thats going to charge an arm an leg for parts?? Oh, they are not new to this been arround for many years! Best to ya, Doug
  11. GL-1 is for manuel trans boxes and can be found at Napa stores(may need to be ordered ,1 gal. containers only). Search on this forum- GL-1, the Napa part # is in there! For a Fluid Coupler with manuel trans behind that, many forum discussions can be found on correct oils that can be used. Back in the early 70's we had a bunch of forklifts that used the chrysler fluid converters with a manuel trans behind that (actually in front of, as engine and trans were front pointed) and we always just used GM type auto trans fluids in them. Just my 2 cent! Doug
  12. Try an email to: krusn64@aol.com Dave, nice guy! Get his latest list of products, mine is about 2 years old. Still sells occasionally on Epay. He makes rubber and some urethane parts including the spring bushings for your year of Ply. He make some products not avail. elsewhere. He owns an old Ply. which got him started on this plus he owns a bus. making all kinds of specialty rubber and urethane parts. Not as cheap as above posts but his products fit and are first class from my 2 experiences with his products. Doug
  13. In years past I worked on a lot of larger (20'-40') forklifts that we added a hydralic brake locking mech. where a handle was flipped over 180 degree and brake pedal pushed on to hold forklift stationary while it's load was unloaded. A metal plate with instructions was put under the handle on how to use it. On that plate in BIG letters it stated: NOT TO BE USED AS A PARK BRAKE AND LEFT UNATTENDED! Some of the earlier ones that we installed did NOT have that warning. A good guess would be that someone did that exact thing and they got sued for the damage/injuries.!!! Years ago I had several disc brake Mechanical parking type calipers and brackets that would work ok for your idea but where to find one now??? Please do not try this hydralic setup! Maybe you can ask arround at some older farm equip. places about a mechanical type brake caliper, mine came off an old sissor type lift, about 1970's. Doug
  14. So now I have an original patina challenge!!!! Paul- google "patina painting" of how to "creat patina" paint. Enjoy the search. Suspect that "patina paint" will cost as much or more using automotive paint, but using spray cans will probably get you yorr patina paint reasonably! I have actually seen in a major rod mag. how one professional rod shop took a brand new fiberglass repop of an early furd and took a dremmel tool to make rust holes and 4 differnent colors of paint on the body and sanded parts off of the color and then actually added rust colors near the rust holes and smeared it and rubbed sand in after the paint stated to set on some of it. Imagine paying a shop $100 per hr.(or more) to do the work for you?!!! See how much money your saving!!! Doug
  15. Lokking a Hollender part interchange book it looks as though you can only use desoto brake drums from 1950-1955 6 or 8 cyl. except 8 passenger, suburban and estate wagon. Pretty narrow search! Good luck! Doug
  16. Jim, It seems to have been a long a tough road to get the OD trans and rear changeover working! Great that it's now paying off with driving pleasure! Wishing you many enjoyable, trouble free miles this summer! AND in the furure, ENJOY! Best to ya, Doug
  17. I agree Tim. Years ago we had two family german shepards that both ate dry or wetted dry dog food recommened by the Vet., but both were setting dry skin and fur. The Vet recommened to add warm grease at least once per week to the food. They loved it and did help with the dry coat and skin issues. Both lived well for many years with almost 0 health problems! Doug
  18. Paul, A couple of things on that "new" motor make me think it might be a latter model flattie. Have you checked the motor # yet? For all of you posting the nice looking but too low if not bagged wagons, Paul has stated several times that he strongly prefers "patina " paint! Paul where do you buy Patina paint?? Best at ya, Doug
  19. With all the enginering types on this forum- perhaps one of them can design, build, patent a device to be installed on cars to capture the smoke and be reinstalled after repairs of the problem area to replace the smoke in the cars system, saves lots of money on repairs and make the designer BILLIONS !!!

Year of car/ motor does not make a difference as most can used in many models depending on engine size, BUT I am not adding about differant advance curves, etc of various models.!--Only the Dist. being used! Adding several install sheets for 6v. pos. ground pertronix ign. sheets to show most changeover info. Thanks, Doug Click here to download this file
