  2. If your contact is corroded, replacement single conductor pigtails can be found at NAPA etc.
  3. Those hooks-on-bolt strut spring compressors are not perfect...had one slip off the spring during strut removal on a Saturn in 2014 and I almost had a heart attack. Apparently I had clamped onto an area that had some penetrating oil that leaked onto it...on installation, I rolled the springs around in the dirt then wiped everything down with clean shop towels before clamping again...haven't touched a strut since, but have done plenty of shocks on independent front suspensions, and the R&I for those is similar to the strut spring removal vid: raise vehicle for shock removal clearance, lift suspension to remove upper nut, remove shock from underneath, install reverse of removal.
  4. Judging from the multicolored block and welch plug logo, I'm a-guessin that engine has been remanufactured...the stamped number might be from the rebuilder. additional information - flathead identification
  5. I've had shipping issues for years with every carrier due to a comedy of errors every time there is an issue. The last was a box of pickled beets I was bootlegging to Illinois that according to an investigation "vanished" from the UPS FtWorth hub, even though tracking showed progress to 30 miles from its destination...apparently, the package was last scanned in FtWorth and progress thereafter was only tracked by the long haul truck that it was supposed to be on I've shot the bull with drivers for the carriers here and there, and they all say the same thing: they have been swamped for over a year, with no end in sight, and Amazon is a bulk of the "problem". If the USPS can get its issues fixed with that bs future pension plan that is basically just being used to service federal debt and modernize to handle more packages than letters, they all say that would really kick the other carriers to get their acts together and modernize to handle the recent changes in e-commerce volume that have increased their professional burden, cuz when the feds make a big move, the private sector follows to maximize profit.
  6. According to Bunn's C-series Trucks Restoration Guide, the 241 Power Dome debuted in '54, and that V8 decal was a '55 only detail that accompanied the 259 V8. If that is a one year only decal, finding a candidate might be difficult. Jim Osborn Reproductions might be helpful, they should be back from vacation after July 5th.

  8. there are several varieties of drop-in filter housings, so you'll need to choose the filter that fits not only inside the housing but works in that housing. The 51080 would need to seal onto the center tube for oil flow to pass through the filter media from the inside outwards. additional information - flathead bypass oil filter function additional information - oil filters
  9. Tire rotation every other oil change was the rule of thumb we followed on the fwds...but if you've got nosedive on braking, all 4 struts and shocks need replacement. Ppl think struts and shocks are just for a smoother ride, but they greatly assist in braking. If you have pronounced nosedive, them rear tires are attempting to leave the road, so rear braking is almost non-existent, putting greater wear on the front brakes and extending braking distance. Fresh struts resist nosedive, planting the rear tires firmly on the road, making them brakes work better and decreasing braking distance. New struts will require 4 wheel alignment tho...afterwards, that buggy will seem new again. Also, your tire wear will even out as traction is increased on the rear, reducing wear on the front.

  11. Surface preparation is something that I looked at when I gave weld certification tests as any contamination from dirt, oil, rust, paint, etc would lead to porosity and slag inclusion. Many welders think they can skip surface prep, adjust their machine to burn through contaminants, and make their welds look good, and many times I would fail these welders on strength sample test per AWS 1.1, which led to lots and lots of commentary. Surfaces do not need to be disinfected, but less contaminants increases the effectiveness of any weld, no matter what base material or process. From your sample welds, all of them appear to be burned over paint, and this leads to some of the issues you have run into as that level of contamination will skew the machine setting needs. Cleaning off the weld area entirely will give you a baseline to set your machine so that you can then focus more on technique; otherwise, you'll be shooting at a moving target. Much like professional painters, the best welders I ever dealt with spent a LOT of time on setup, material prep, and practice welds, and ALL of them said heating up their machines by doing practice welds 1st before doing welds on the workpieces would drastically improve their weld quality. Sheet metal welding is a process that is less forgiving than structural welding, so you're better off starting off a little cold and increasing up to the appropriate heat range. Welding too hot will introduce the rippling or oil can effect even if your speed is fast enough to avoid burn through consumption. From my experience, it's easier to oxy-acetyl braze sheet metal than to use MIG or stick welders, but that's just personal preference not from possible weld quality. All 3 processes can yield effective results with proper material preparation and weld technique.
  12. Being the longest day of the year, I managed to take a look at the back side of these door hinge backing plates this evening. Long story short: as long as the plate is held in place with the door hinge mounting bolts, it should work nicely. additional information - door hinge backing plates
  13. There appears to be another small change in the cabs from '48 to '49 in the door upper hinge area. The '49-'53 cabs appear to have a stiffener added in this area...hard to see, but it's up in there...

  17. Dad has a tilt-bed trailer, lighting was iffy for 10+ yrs...time for a new wood floor, minor weld repairs, pack wheel bearings, and fresh coat of paint, I got volun-told to get r dun. Looking at the tilt mechanism, it was obvious why the lighting was inconsistent. I added a ground wire to bypass the hinges, lighting problem solved ?

  19. What does White Post say about this recent issue? It sounds to me like the issue has to do as pointed out with those cup expanders, as the seal is working under pressure but not so much when pressure drops.
  20. is it weeping at the cup seals, bleeder screw, and / or inlet?

  23. I remember when that statement was made, and my marketing side said "yeah right, they'll just call it something else, say it's completely new, but it'll be mildly derivative of Windows 10." I'm still hanging on to my 12yr old laptop running Windows 7, thought I was gonna have to retire it a few days ago when the wifi stopped working...it took a few days but the fix that worked was to disable the wifi driver, rebooted, a warning popped up that the driver was disabled, but it had connected faster than it had in a long while...I know I'm delaying the inevitable, but I'm prone to use things until they outlive their usefulness, like my 20 yr old QuadCab, 30 yr old John Deere 425, 44 yr old Maytag washer and dryer, 60+ yr old Emerson oscillating fan, 70+ yr old Pilot-House trucks...
  24. one of the problems with reproducing these old photographs is lack of resolution. If this picture has low resolution in a newspaper, then printing it as a larger reproduction will give grainy results. By accident, I was able to reproduce a low resolution photograph that I used as the wallpaper on my PC when I upgraded to a larger monitor by clearing the home screen of icons and taking a jpg screenshot. This produced a higher resolution jpg than my original, which I printed, framed and sent to a lady friend on her birthday...she was over the moon cuz the original jpg I had sent her, she could not blow up with her software. There may be software that can reproduce low resolution jpgs available, but those are usually for professional use and command a premium.
