  1. I could answer that with one word but get a political ban in doing so.....actually....I miss front vent windows....
  2. chrysler1941 is right....the design of the tube and install is critical for proper ventilation on the crankcase...one can repair this with a tube welded back in place IF he has the correct profile for exhaust/suspension or other components to clear.....the main thing is however the tube length per frame application and angle of the cut on the tube to get proper venturi effect while car is in motion as this is a suction system...not just an open tube for exiting gasses etc but it does pass some gasses at idle...
  3. I often get more frustrated over not being able to find hardware in the grade and style I wish......we have a huge supply house next to me that has a huge variety but alas they do not stock it all. So off to e-bay...today's quest.....10-24 Slotted Cheese head screws...stainless would be great...but nothing comes back 10-24....the German industry offers these cheese heads in metric....largest user of this style fastener I guess....
  4. I did a quick look for a video on you tube that is an original advert for the hydrolastic suspension....I could not find it quickly but will post the link when I do....these little cars are being tweak with a number of retrofits...some very in depth builds....I wish but to pep it a bit, similar to what folks here do to the flatheads here....header, twin carbs and few other mild dress/performance features....just installing this engine I have had to overcome things like cable clutch to hydraulic, pot drive to Spicer joints, fuel pump changes, the added carbs and dressing them for fit to the firewall...same with header and still not quite locked onto the muffler I want. The cooling system required a number of tweaks in porting and routing. We all know the ever moving line in the sand on such retro fits but we that do them also know the fun it is to work these small details out and put them in play. I am having fun with the build. The trip to get the car and back home was a bit over 2000 miles....ONLY IF IT WERE CLOSER is a cop out statement to me.....if you want it, dang it get it....!!!
  5. who ever would win, we all would lose...
  6. Caterpillar seems to have had the only listing for a hydraulic fitting I was researching one time....they do have a ton of parts....most parts are spec referenced making them a bit easier to locate in the chain...specs is what led me to their inventory
  7. Yes this is a 1970 Austin America.....I recently bought this with engine and transmission missing. That was fine by me as I have a 1985 1275 engine with greater horsepower, better gearing and shifter mechanism. The cars are quite big, roomier than a Rolls for that year. The suspension is hydrolastic and is truly a great ride. Disc brakes and rack and pinion steering. 4 speed on the floor and bucket seats. The engine I am slowing working it up a bit for the install....HP will be 30% over stock. Plenty of parts are being custom made by me for the install. I am making this a sort of nonsense build...and will have a lot of Timmized parts and features. Shot of the engine in case anyone would like to see it....the differential and 4 speed tranny is in the engine oil sump....the clutch is between the engine and the flywheel....rather unique if you not familiar with the arrangement. The brass choke levers just arrived Saturday and I have cut one inch out of each and brazed back together so I will have top pull chokes and could not find any data on the H4s as original fitted to a competition only 1275 Cooper...this engine best Copper specs with a single carb and cast iron manifold...shown is the Maniflow LCB header system. Something to play with....they fun to drive.
  8. hey what's not to like.....its a two door and true to the SPORT name...the rear aerial and twin mirrors add a nice touch.......these are getting harder to locate also...my latest is not an American..but an America.....
  9. silly me....I was thinking you posting a picture of the MIL
  10. oh no...a sure sign the VD Parade has gone to the dogs...... Actually, most dogs are more deserving that bratty kids.....ok before you ream me....key word, BRATTY
  11. them deer are often camera shy....they don't like nobody pointing anything at them.....glad the trip was uneventful...you getting a shop full at the house now....
  12. the lever is as that of the 49 Plymouth hood release but should be engraved overdrive and it is just left of the steering column.....also a look under the vehicle and you can see wiring on the transmission....and round solenoid etc attached to the housing.....the case will have the R10 cast onto it also....
  13. collection of overdue speeding tickets in the glove box......?
  14. look at the very top of the cast of the carrier where she bolts onto the banjo....usually the gears are stamped here by tooth count......
  15. ther than a fluke...accident while adjusting your switch with possible power on....you tell us....if it pops another, do the math with ohms law and see if you have an existing problem.
  16. you sacrificing flexibility and adding flammable jacket here.....really not any better and less suitable than PVC overall...I would have figured you on using teflon coated wiring.....now that is tough stuff.
  17. depending on what you are out to catch.....the difference in bait used......!!
  18. Price of metal has gone through the roof....at an all time high right now. If you are lucky enough to have a metal recycler who will allow parts removal before crushing it would be the opportune time to make a walk through that yard. While it would be an extremely are event to find a 40/50 car there.....retrofitters and upgraders looking for rear gear, brake mods, trannies and the sort, this could be the opportunity you awaiting for. My local started a huge new yard of the new arrivals to the one side and it is overflowing. Last week I did not have time to do the cruise of the newer arrivals. Probably head out for a walkabout the new arrivals today or tomorrow.
  19. so does our Advance....I often time pop in and ask to view one or two of the books if looking for something special without my knowing what car may or may not have had it installed. The books are a great help to those that do a bit of special install work.
  20. NUMBER of question you have to answer for yourself. Do you wish to remain 6 volt....or upgrade to 12 for future adds of accessories or creature comforts. Do you want added protection on your circuits? Mainly how comfortable are you with working a wiring loom. If stock is your goal, couple companies offer these in cloth and color as original. If going 12 volt a multi-fused circuit would be good investment and decide first which accessories for upgrade. Each harness is often tailored around a donor manufacturer. Lastly if you are not at all comfortable with standing on your head and reading schematics....you may wish just to patch what you find wrong for now or find someone who is willing to do the work and do get references...many are not at the level of expertise as they claim to be.
  21. I would say for the most part you do not get what you paid for except in face value alone....you may get a distributor cap...but it may be poorly made so you paid for a cap and you got the cap only the cap was not a good representation of what you were expecting. My wife ordered a cover for the log splitter...advertized as correct fit, heavy duty and stand up to any task. I have seen trash can bags built better. So she did not get what she paid for. After 5 days I sent a inquiry to a part on e-bay....I had no shipping details. I asked if was overlooked. I got a reply, not overlooked, it ships today and still supposed to be here Wednesday.....that pig better have some good wings. Service is going downhill like a runaway train.
  22. I just got a follow up from the company on my incorrectly sent part...the new one is being shipped....do not send the old one back as first requested....it will cost them as much as the part is worth I am sure. Their error he said and asked ONLY that I send a photograph instead for their QA folks for writing off as a business loss I suppose. While I still have to wait for the new part....at least I will not have to wait for them to reimburse me shipping.... I last had an issue with a company in Texas...however....I have never seen a better customer service department in years....they were dead on top the issue and made it right...and did it very quickly also....
  23. customer service is only found in the dictionary and not on the same page....
  24. I agree...but finding these parts these days is getting harder and harder to do and the companies you used to rely on for the good stuff has had to start relying on the OS makers just to keep stock on hand....this is the trend, this is the bad news to the man on the street.
  25. to be honest with you.....I am not so sure the parts today are not made but by one company who packages it in the box of the supplier you buy it from. These old cars are not anywhere near daily driver and the common repair items are even less in demand than ever in the past. For a company to start up just making a simple rotor button would be quite the cost for them to get to a break even on sales. My last parts order just came in....order was not correctly pulled and packed.....two of one and none of the other so while they have shipped one out to me per the phone call this morning....it will be a minimum one week setback...this is what kills me with dealing with suppliers....their error really screws up my work schedule.
