  1. While you are under there checking the oil level , see if the vent on top is pluged up . It has a little crimped cap on top that should wiggle freely .
  2. Try shifting about half-way into 2nd before going into 1st . This of course is the same idea that others have mentioned .
  3. [quote=Jim Yergin;...<snip> I just replaced the water pump ...<snip> Jim , Did you replace the water pump just after or before it started running hot ? If you replaced your pump and it then started to run hot , can you put your old pump back on to see if it will run normal ?
  4. Here is the information from a 1938 - 1939 Dodge truck manual . The correct pressure is from 40 to 50 pounds at normal driving speed . A heavier spring is used to increase pressure and a lighter spring to decrease pressure . Standard springs are not painted , springs lighter than standard are painted red . The heavy springs are painted green .
  5. As a last resort , split the nut if you have access to the sides . Use a nut splitter , or a cutting disk on an angle grinder , some guys have been known to drill a series of holes accross the nut and then split it with a chisel . It doesn't have a cotter pin in it that you can't see does it ?
  6. I also think that you can find an original tailgate replacement , but if you do decide to fabricate , look at the EMT electrical conduct at the hardware store for the pipe portion .
  7. I use the petcock method that replaces the drain plug . There is a brass nipple soldered onto the petcock that I slip a hose on and catch the oil down below .
  8. You want to end up with a surface as smooth as glass . I used to use crocus cloth for the final smoothing , using it wet with brake fluid . As stated above , any pits , sleeve or replace .
  9. On the speedometers that I have had in my hands , you can take a VERY small screwdriver and stick it in the back of the speedometer (where the cable would go) and give the mechanism a quick turn to see if the needle moves and returns to zero .
  10. One of the Marx brothers said " I don't want to join a cub that would have a member like me "
  11. One easy check I used to do on master cylinders was ; Very ,very slowly apply pressure to your brake pedal , if your master cylinder is leaking the pedal will go to the floor .
  12. Ed , Sometimes the mechanism gets worn , with your window open... reach inside and actually hold the handle up in the locked position...now see if the door is locked . If this doesn't do anything , then I don't know any other tricks .
  13. I like head bolts rather than studs . If you need to remove the head in the future , it comes off a lot easier if you don't have to break it loose AND lift it up over the studs . There isn't much to hold on to when lifting it up .
  14. Vazloz , Are you saying that your tail lights are now negative ground and the rest of your truck is still positive ground ? If so , I would not start the truck either .
  15. Ed , I used newspaper to make a pattern for my truck mat . It took some time and fiddeling around but it came out good .
  16. I have a king pin reamer size .850 and I am trying to find out which vehicles it is for . I searched ebay and haven't found one that size to compare . Any ideas ?
  17. The lines do not have to be the same length . I used to put them behind the license plates on cars that had fold-down plates for gas tank filler access . It seems to me that you could put them in the trunk .
  18. I see a lot of the old canisters at swap meets and if there is a junk yard in your area with old cars , you will find them there too .
  19. Yes , one downside of using a coathanger wire is that type of wire is very brittle . It could break off in the line then you would have a more serious problem . If you want to use a wire , use one that will bend and twist more without breaking . Some of the guys just used high pressure air to blow the filter appart . A good auger for the gas line is the housing from a choke or throttle cable , you can put it in your drill , but it might not be suitable to auger through your filter .
  20. Dave , My valve settings were also set cold by a very experienced flat head machinist . This was a couple of years ago and he told me that I would never have to reset them , and I haven't . I don't remember the settings , but he said that there were a number of opinions on the subject .
  21. There isn't much iron between the piston bores on a 23 " block , I would think that a 25 " block must have a better distance between the bores .
  22. I have to agree with Shel on this . I know that there are experts that think otherwise , but it just makes good common sense to me .
  23. 1968 chevy wagon . Purchase price $550 . I drove it for 10 years , then my son drove it for 4 years , then we sold it for a profit .
