  1. D25 , You mentioned earlier that the engine has been rebuilt , you also mention that they want $2000 for the parts . Are they asking for more money for their labor ? if they only want the $2000 , ask around to see if they are trustworthy , if they are OK then see if you can talk them down a bit on the money and perhaps pay on a payment plan . Perhaps a discount for you to go in and clean their shop . The barter system ?
  2. Joe , Just wondering , this time , can you tighten your flywheel bolts before you put your oil pan on ?
  3. I made one out of the thin flexable plastic from a throw-away food container . It has held up well for several years .
  4. That is a good idea but also at the same time move your throttle arm full swing and watch for a full stream of gas down the throat .
  5. I while back i read that there are special clips that are used on the paint can lids for shipping . Anyone who ships paint would know about the requirements .
  6. Not all of the exhaust manifolds had the dump in the same spot . The difference might have been between cars and trucks .
  7. Jim , I have seen shims (wedges) in place where the straight axles are mounted . I was told that when they do an alignment on a straight axle that they can actually bend the axle if necessary . Update ; I just looked in a shop manual for a 1938 dodge truck with a straight axle and front leaf springs . Adjustment of caster angle shows a wedge plate between the leaf spring and the axle . The thick part of the wedge is to the rear of the vehicle .
  8. In the post by Bob on the red Plymouth tag . What do the letters M.DEF M.IND RGTRDA stand for ? Are they english ? OK I'm guessing that it means trade mark registered , perhaps in spanish .

  10. The throttle knob is connected to the throttle linkage and when you pull out the knob it holds the throttle part way open . This is very handy when starting a cold engine . As the engine warms up you push the knob back in . The knob will pull out easily if you depress the gas pedal a little . A hand throttle works best if it has a little resistance in it to keep it from slipping back in once pulled out .

  13. Some of these parts are left - hand threaded . I don't know which ones though .
  14. I have gone through several electric fuel pumps over the years . I used to mount them down low next to the tank but I got tired of crawling under there to test and replace , so now I mount them on the inner fender . As a side note , when using an old choke cable or throttle cable as an auger to clean out the fuel line , I found out that some of the old cables are larger in diameter than others . The cable that I picked up at a flea market was a very good ( large ) fit .
  15. Some of the new replacements are plastic . I noticed floats of the same size in the hardware store on arms for the water shut off on swamp coolers . They were selling the floats with arms separately . Perhaps an appliance parts store would have them too .
  16. Aaron , not all of the vacuum pots are the same . Before you take them apart , compare the distributor part numbers on the side of the distributor . There is a VERY tiny clip that holds the arm in place inside of the distributor . The best way to keep from loosing this clip is to do your work inside of a clear plastic bag . Of course this means removing the distributor and making a note of where your rotor is pointing before removal .
  17. There are TWO little holes in the bottom of the master cylinder , one is so small that it takes a pin to clear .
  18. Look for any holes worn into your steel gas line , sometimes these show up as a wet spot . Look for any rubber hose connections that are old , these might need to be replaced . Look for any loose connections on the gas line that could suck air . On another note ; there is a small wire in the distributor that moves each time that you use the throttle , if this little wire is grounding out or making a bad connection , you could be having this problem too .
  19. It is good practice to disconnect your battery when working on your electrical system so you don't create an unintended spark or short something out .
  20. The regulator does not need to be polarized . The generator does if it has been disturbed and a handy place to do this can be at the regulator . Do you need to polarize your generator ?
  21. If you think that your choke plate might be closing on it's own , take a piece of wire and tie it open .
  22. Jim , If your engine is out of the truck , a last resort is to drill a hole , perhaps 3/4 inch in the rear of the block so that you can get at it from both ends . My rebuilder did this on my engine . Find the right size welch plug first . I repeat , last resort .
  23. I can understand that way of thinking . After my first son was born I sold my 1948 plymouth and didn't buy another old hobby vehicle until I was an empty nester . I had older vehicles but they were all economically practical . All of my spare time was spent with family and all of my spare money was invested . I had a blue collar job and put my kids through college . One time I was considering buying a 22 caliber pistol just for enjoyment and one of my sons was trying to think of something that I had purchased just for fun , he couldn't think of anything .
  24. It is probably sucking air from someplace that it shouldn't . For example ; at the base of the carbs if they should be loose . Or perhaps the intake manifold . One way to test for air leaks around the intake manifold is to hold an unlit propane torch at the joints and listen for an increase of RPM 's . If you have a vacuum hose for your windshield wipers , is it leaking ? If you have a vacuum line to your distributor , is it leaking ? I don't know the history of your project , has it been alright in the past or are your carb adjustments way out of wack . Is wack a real word ?
