  1. Be carefull with putting on a smaller air cleaner , sometimes they don't get enough air that way and run too rich . Some have stacked two of the small air filters , one on top of the other to get enough air through .
  2. It is quick and easy to see if you are getting enough fuel to the carb . Disconnect your fuel line where it connects to the carburator and turn on the electric pump and watch the amount of flow into a bucket .
  3. Perhaps it gets gas , but not enough gas for needs at the higher RPM's ? Weak fuel pump , restriction in line or tank ? Vented gas cap ?
  4. An old choke cable housing or throttle cable housing on a drill makes a good auger . Do not use a coat hanger wire on a drill though as that wire is brittle , one guy broke his coat hanger off inside his tank outlet .
  5. Some of the guys with the 1939 - 1947 dodge trucks use two forks ( as in dinning forks ) and place these under the pointer and pull . Or how about just repainting the pointer with white paint ? Less chance of something breaking in the second method .
  6. Have you checked out repairing the existing O.D. transmission ? I think that would be the choice of most folks . And as stated earlier , the electrical gizmos that connect to it would be suspect .
  7. Brain , You will want a shop that is close by . Where do you live ? edit ; I missed the 6vpart , thinking a heavy flat head engine .
  8. flattiefreak , Are you using a 12 volt battery ? If so, you do need a resistor on the wire that goes to your distributor so that your points don't burn out real fast .
  9. I just listed 3 of those cowl lights today . I found them real cheap at the flea market and spent several hours cleaning them up . See ebay 330287990253
  10. Often when a coil goes bad , they will malfuntion after the coil warms up . Also others have had a problem with old insulation on the wire inside of the armored cable - it gets brittle and falls off causing a short against the armor .
  11. Any hardware store or plumbing supply store should have one in steel . It is a pipe thread .
  12. My 6 volt Optima battery is several years old . Today I made a trip to one of my favorite hiking areas and there is a section of the highway where drivers must turn on their headlights during the day . When i reached my destination I forgot to turn off my headlights and had a hike before remembering my lights were on . My lights were on for an hour before I could get back to my truck so after I switched off the lights I let the truck set for 5 minutes before attempting to start the engine . The engine fired right up as normal . We know that the 6 volt systems turn the engine over more slowly than a 12 volt system and I read that they will also turn the starter much LONGER before draining the battery . Perhaps the same holds true for when you leave your lights on .
  13. RobertKB; ... " Problem was pretty simple. When I had the tires and tubes installed about five years ago someone at the shop left a label on the tube and this eventually worked its way through the tube. " I have not heard of this problem before . If one label was left on , might the other labels also have been left on ?
  14. I make mine from a flexable - throw away food container . I wanted one that would last a long time , and it has . Just snip out the circle with scissors .
  15. Is the "breather cap" fastened to the seat ? If so you probably have a seat that is designed to partially hold air for and adjustable firmness of ride .
  16. There is a group for 1939 - 1947 dodge trucks and someone in that group might have a transmission to sell . www.39-47dodgetrucks.com They don't have a for sale section so you just have to ask . It is not required that you have a truck of this year , but you will need to join the group to get into the site . I think that there is also another group for the 1938 trucks but I don't know the address .
  17. The 1939 was still a non-syncro and perhaps the 1940 too . I would look at 1941 through 1947 . I am not sure but I think that the 1948 and up had a different main shaft .
  18. Young Ed , That is a good point . I have the 1938 shop manual and the 1939 suppliment and the picture of the two transmissions look the same . Also I have the Pin Point Parts Specifier and the part numbers for the mainshaft and the transmisson case are the same for both the 1938 RC and 1939 TC .
  19. 1938 , I don't know . 1939 yes . If someone knows if the 1938 and 1939 are interchangable , your question would be answered . For example a syncro trans from a 1941 will fit a 1939 . Externally they are the same . We are talking 3 speeds here as the 4 speeds were not syncro untill a few years later . Young Ed might know the answer , why don't you post the question over on the section that gets more traffic ?
  20. I got my wife involved when I needed to bleed my brakes . She got grease on her clothes . She wasn't able to see the humor in it .
  21. If anyone else is going to buy these spring shackle bushings from Rare Parts , have them label the parts as to location . They can look in their book and get this information . It worked for me . They are in my hometown so even though their price was higher than others , the cost was the same as there was no shipping .
  22. If there is any question of perhaps your throttle linkage holding the throttle partially open , disconnect the linkage and see if if will idle down .
  23. Those sealed throw-away canisters are scarce and expensive , so throw it away and put on a canister and replace the element . I see lots of canisters at every swap meet . Ebay has them too but they can be expensive there .
  24. Bob , I can't find most of that paperwork right now but I remember new timing chain and sprockets , brass water distribution tube , pistons , oil pump , valves , valve guides , machining surfaces on manifolds and head and top of block , machineing the cylinders , all parts and gaskets , etc . He set the valves too and I was surprised when he said that I would never have to touch valve adjustment again ... and I haven't . I did purchase a new water pump and installed that myself . He said to not let it idle on initial start up .
