  1. The next time that it overflows , take the top off the carb and see where the fuel level is .
  2. I am a skinny guy so when I did mine I didn't even use jack stands . I just put a slippery tarp on the floor so I can slide along .
  3. Weasel , It has been a long time and you haven't received an answer so I will enter my 2 cents . On the three speeds for the years 1939 - 1947 the answer is YES . I just remove the largest section of the floorboard and slip it out onto the floor below for my truck .
  4. Here is a photo of an arm rest on a 1939 Dodge truck door . There wasn't any hardware in or on the door to attach the armrest . I bought a cheap tool at Harbor Freight to install threaded inserts , i used the inserts for 1/4 diameter bolts . I have no reference to where the factory put the arm rests but this spot is comfortable . The arm rests came from a junk yard mopar car . The inserts that I used are aluminum and they are holding up fine .
  5. While you have the lid off of your oil canister , and are changing the filter , you should change the black oil too to match your clean engine oil.
  6. You got lucky that the impeller fell off . Now you know that the pump needs to be replaced . Better to find out now .
  7. Vintage Power Wagons . www.vintagepowerwagons.com
  8. All of the auto parts stores sell pre made brake lines at a good price .
  9. All good information to help the man make an informed decision .
  10. Well i have been buying my Optima batteries on line , taking advantage of their free shipping . The huge price difference makes up for any possible warranty problems in my opinion . Also I was not in a hurry . Just shop around and if the prices that you find are not too much higher local ... go that route .
  11. Be sure to compare prices with what you can find on ebay and Amazon for the 6 volt Optima .
  12. I think Jan has got a good point , it probably is brake fluid . Does it feel thin like brake fluid or thick like gear oil ? If you put a drop on a painted surface the paint will wrinkle up and come off if it is brake fluid . Also gear oil has a very strong smell all its own .
  13. Knuckle , Don't confuse me with Roberts Motor Parts on the east coast . I am a private party in California . His name is Gary Roberts and I am Jerry Roberts .
  14. I show for 1937 Dodge 1 ton ; MD 20 with a 120 " wheel base . Also a MD 21 for a 136 " wheel base . This info is from Pin Point Parts Specifier for the 1936 - 1949 trucks . I also have starting and closing serial numbers for these trucks and some of the more common part numbers if you need them . If you should happen to have a 1938 1 ton , the model numbers are RD20 and RD21 , the windshield gasket part number is the same for both years .
  15. I am going to guess that the casting was a little rough and they used a grinder on it at the factory .
  16. Where you have printed 88 , that should be 80 , it is a right side up 80 ... the opposite of the other numbers . So it reads 80 , not 08 . You can find a photo on ebay .
  17. I straightened my tie rod several years ago and it has stayed straight . I put it in the vise and pulled it straight . My work bench is fastened to the wall so there was no movement there when I pulled on the tie rod . Sometimes you might need a pipe as a cheater bar for leverage . On the other hand , a guy told me that once they are bent , they will bend again. But he was a Ford guy . The Ford guy's solution was to weld a long piece of angle iron to the tie rod .
  18. So if you decide to get a price quote for repair of the sides , you can compare that price to the cost of new replacement bed sides .
  19. To the trans is fine . Make sure you have a good ground from the engine to the frame too .
  20. This brace was a bolt - on . Here is a photo of the brace that supports the clutch shaft and attaches the springs . The brace came from a Pilot House truck and the bell housing is from a 1939 Dodge truck 3 speed .
  21. Well it looks like I misspoke . Attached is a page from a 1940 Plymouth truck parts book . It shows a bracket that looks like yours and even the springs look like yours . It does not show a brace to the clutch shaft . The part number in the book is 561351 . I believe that the brace that I described came out sometime after 1940 and it also fits the Pilot House trucks .
  22. PT81 Jan , You are doing such nice work that I hate to say this ; There is a bracket that has to go between the pedals where you have the collar . The purpose of the bracket is to reinforce the clutch shaft and also to have a place where your pedal return springs attach . The bracket will bolt to your bell housing , way over to the drivers side . PS when I got my truck the bracket was missing and there was a home made bracket to attach the springs , so perhaps there is a work around for you .
  23. Click and Clack have a web site where people recommend mechanics , by the zip code .
  24. Where I live the Pick-n Pull yard has a separate yard for the vehicles that they try to sell complete . You can't buy any parts from the separate vehicles , unless they don't sell , then they part them out . I have seen a couple of oldies there .
  25. A four speed will not be a bolt in as the 4 speed bell housing is different . It might only require drilling and taping for new bolt holes though . Also the 4 speed transmissions for 1939 - 1947 trucks were not synchronized . Also high gear with both 3 & 4 speed transmissions was 1 to 1 . In other words , no overdrive . Also the early three speed were not synchronized , for example 1939* .
