  1. This is the procedure for a 1938 Dodge 1/2 ton truck .
  2. I looked in my books and didn't find anything . If it were mine , i wouldn't want any spring action there . Can you imagine turning the steering wheel and having to wait for the slop to be taken up by the spring ? I would tighten it up completely and then back it off just a little so that the inside parts won't bind . Lots of grease of course . A google search might help .
  3. Here is what it says on my bottle of MMO ; When you do an oil change put in 20 % MMO . when you fill your gas tank put in 4 oz . for a 10 gallon tank . I don't put anywhere near that amount in my vehicle .
  4. Some of the NOS 6 volt bulbs have been sitting around for many years . Have you ever had one separate between the base and the glass when you install it ? I have been giving my old bulbs a bead of super glue at that joint . Use the thin stuff not the gel and the glue will pretty much run around the surface by itself when you hold the bulb horizontally.
  5. " The screw that sticks out the side of the distributor and gets connected to the coil via a wire, is that supposed to be electrically isolated from the distributor body? " YES .
  6. It has been mentioned on this forum that vinegar will soften cast iron .
  7. Long ago it was mentioned that you can take an old head bolt and cut groves in it lengthwise ( with a dremel ? ) and use it to chase the threads to prevent removing any metal .
  8. The connection on the inside top center of your distributor cap should move up and down when you touch it with your finger . It has a spring behind it with slight pressure . " flopping around " ... no .
  9. When my steering wheel felt like that , the nut that holds the steering wheel in place was a little loose .
  10. From an Auto-Lite catalog printed in 1951 ; wiper motor EWH4001 was used in Chrysler 1946 - 1949 . Also in Dodge 1942 and 1946 - 1948 . My book doesn't show that wiper motor for Desoto . Also my book doesn't show any information on the switches .
  11. The tiny vent in your master cylinder cap can be hard to see . The ones that I have found had been on the side ( on one of the flats ) of the cap . If you have an overfilled master cylinder , the only thing that will happen is that when the fluid splashes inside , it probably will spill out of the tiny vent hole .
  12. Yes , that was over on the truck side of the forum .
  13. Here are a couple of places ; Ace Steering ( Ace Automotive ) , 801 W. Forsyth St . , Jacksonville , Fl . 32204 . 904-353-4111 or Fleet Services , 3250 Miraloma Ave . , Anaheim . Ca . . 714-630-2180 Cost ... unknown ... give them a call . Here is another one ; Pro Steering in Portland, OR
  14. Got a magnet ? It won't stick to aluminum .
  15. If you need a wheel cylinder because your existing wheel cylinder is badly pitted , another option could be to have your cylinder sleeved .
  16. Your hands look like they bruise easily , mine are the same . I think it is because of thin skin . Sometimes I bruise mine without even knowing how it happened . When doing mechanical work I wear gloves with the finger tips cut off so I still have my sense of touch .
  17. Optima makes a 6 volt battery that packs a wallop . Drawbacks are the odd shape and the high price .
  18. Before you do anything , try the easy option first ; Try to remove the broken old key with a thin ice pick . Another method might be to use part of a coping saw blade to mesh with the teeth on the key to pull out the broken portion .
  19. What size is the engine in your 1935 plymouth , about 196 cubic inches ? I don't think that you would want rear end gears of 2.76 with that engine . I have 2.94 gears with a 218 and I sure wouldn't want anything higher than that . You would need something higher than my gears .
  20. An old choke cable in an electric drill can be used as an auger to clean the outlet on the gas tank . It is still a good idea to look inside the tank and see whats up .
  21. The early Fords used HURD keys too .
  22. And you are getting to be an interesting old mechanic too Paul .
  23. And remember safety first . Don't do these things without blocking your wheels and setting your emergency brake .
  24. Bob , You can try doing a search with google for the Yahoo group 1939 - 1947 Dodge trucks . That group isn't as active as this one but you should join it for the info .
