OH2BME621 Posted July 9, 2022 Report Posted July 9, 2022 Hi, Has anyone had to change their muffler on a car like this? I am trying to find one at a decent price. Thanks Quote
greg g Posted July 9, 2022 Report Posted July 9, 2022 Using a Dynomax turbo flow. It was about 35 bucks at Pep Boys, but that was in 2004. 2 in id inlet and outlet. Check their website for current equivalent. Had the pipes custom bent. Muffler is in pretty much stock location using g stock hanger locations. You can hear it when the engine is working but quiet at cruise, no dronning. Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted July 9, 2022 Report Posted July 9, 2022 (edited) I just replaced my exhaust system from parts I bought from Andy Bernbaum around 1990. But I don't think he sells them anymore. For some reason, the exhaust pipe wouldn't fit on my manifold, so we used my old exhaust pipe instead. Then I installed the new muffler and tail pipe. I wrote about this in a past post about three months ago. The muffler and tail pipe jiggled too much because the hanger was shot and the rear tail pipe support was shot. I bought a new generic middle support and a new tail pipe support, which is a weird thing that goes up in the rear cross frame. That tightened everything up just fine. Young Ed Posted July 9, 2022 Report Posted July 9, 2022 Last fall I replaced just my muffler. Measured what I had and ordered from rock auto. I did have to buy a reducer for one side which also made up the little bit of length I was short. Quote
plymouthcranbrook Posted July 9, 2022 Report Posted July 9, 2022 Waldrons has a listing for almost everything. A full system for a 52 four door is about $450 or so. I have heard good things about their products but cheap they aren’t. Quote
Kilgore47 Posted July 9, 2022 Report Posted July 9, 2022 I had the exhaust replaced on the 47 P15 about a year ago at a local muffler shop. Under 300 dollars for a manifold back installation. This shop also works on old cars. Looks like it came from the factory. Quote

Thanks If you are going to some websites that list application for these older cars...odds are you are going to pay way too much as they figure they got you...but, if you buy the muffler by specs, you will get a very good muffler with excellent tone from your local big box store. As you are looking for a muffler only I take it the rest of the system is not being replaced. Mufflers are sold in inlet and outlet pipe size and body location of these pipes (straight, offset or combo) they are sold in length of body and length overall including the inlet/outlet pipe and the style, pancakes or round, are sold by body size......armed with this you should be able to get a muffler in the 30-45 dollar range...for me, I find Walker is a very good muffler for the money. Go to Summit racing and plug in your dimensions 1 Quote

You get real close to $900 delivered for stainless and uncut pipes, $520 delivered for aluminized steel and cut pipes. I wonder if they have a setup for the Langdon's split exhaust manifolds, lol. Bryan Posted July 9, 2022 Report Posted July 9, 2022 On my 1948 4-door D24 Dodge I measured under the car. Don't know if Plymouth is the same. It's 28" from center of cross member to front of heat shield, or 30" if you measure from front lip of cross member. Heat shield is 20" L and 9" wide. The flat area (some angle iron piece on side) for a muffler is 29" long. From that angle piece to center of axle is 30" (or to hanger is 28 1/2"). Tried measuring from front of cross member lip at bellhousing to same hanger - measures 5ft. From bottom side edge of heat shield to bottom of frame is 3 3/4". From rear of axle to end of bumper is 47". Would do like Plymouthy Adams said, use inlet/outlet sizes and orientation to pick a Walker muffler. Quote
