desoto1939 Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 My friend has the cotter pin fall out of the rear castle nut and the wheel and drum were loose. The key was still in the slot so no damage that we can see. What is the torque setting when he installs the nut back on the axle. I think i remember around 120-140 foot pounds but can not find any values. Anyone know the correct torque for the rear axle castle nut on the axle shaft/ Thanks Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com Quote
keithb7 Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 Searched multiple factory manuals here, not seeing a torque value published. Also searched my 2 Motor's manuals, nothing. 120-130 for some reason comes to mind fo me as well. My ½" drive torque wrench gets me there. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 Torque to 142lbs...then if necessary to align the nut slots so the cotter pin will fit to axle pin hole....tighten the nut more to align the nut slots to the pin hole....do not back off the slotted castle nut! Always tighten the nut a bit.more to align it. 3 Quote

Andydodge Posted January 27, 2022 Report Posted January 27, 2022 I would also check and probably replace the key, think its 5/16", if the drum & wheel are loose its a good opportunity to do it then & there, the key has probably had a bit of a bashing......lol...........andyd Quote

If there is any a good machine shop can fix it. Quote
MarcDeSoto Posted January 27, 2022 Report Posted January 27, 2022 Important stuff here! I still remember, about 40 years ago, seeing a pickup truck driving in the fast lane on Highway 8 in San Diego as his rear axle started to come out! Then his wheel came off and went careening down the highway! Quote

Then his wheel came off and went careening down the highway! I've seen that happen and fixed a few. All were Fords for some reason. And all had been severely overloaded and/or run with a really bad wheel bearing until it failed. The bearing is all that holds then in. Well, pressed on bearing and a backup sleeve so once the balls left the bearing, out it comes. Fortunately, at lower speeds the truck just stops as the axle no longer drives but the diff sends the power to the failed side. Quote
