1950s Dog dish caps

Im writing here in desperation.  I bought a 1954 Plymouth Belvedere 2dr HT about 4 years ago.   Ive been working on it little by little over the years and have come to love the dog dish poverty cap that came with the car.  The problem is only ONE came with the car!!!   There are no markings or numbers on this particular and have never found another one like it.   Ive posted a few times in different FB Plymouth/ Dodge/ Chrysler forums and have never received any info.   The inside diameter measures about 8.5" and the outside measures about 9".   Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong,but I think that is an aftermarket hubcap. I kinda vaguely remember them being for sale in the 60's,and liking them then.

there is an old thread on here where the 54 poverty cap was discussed and actual pictures of the originals were shown...do a search on the forum, I really do not recall the entire thread...but I remember saying I had never seen a set of poverty's for the 54 but, they do exist...ever after all this time since the thread, still not seen a set in real life...only the full dish and the Cello wire baskets...I went for the Cello wires on my 54   Poverty caps with beauty rims is a very clean look and have these on a number of my cars

The parts manual I have shows one hubcap for a 54 Plymouth, or wheel cover as the book calls it.  1538828 is the part number and it is not a poverty cap.

 

1953 calls for a pn 1408539, again not a poverty cap.

50-52 calls for a pn 1323015, again not a poverty cap.

49-50 calls for pn 1316723, again not a poverty cap.

46-48 calls for an 1126980, no idea what these are BUT they are also listed for Dodge so they probably do not have anything specific stamped into them.

46-48 also calls for pn 1140087, no idea what they are though.

 

I have found no part number listed for a 54 Plymouth that is a poverty cap.  So I dug into my interchange manual and wouldn't you know it, the hubcap section is missing.

I made similar argument back then on the full dish and the Cello official accessory.....I was quickly outvoted by the forum at large that the poverties did exist for the 54....I remark again.....I have never seen them in person...I based my argument then and now that the 54 did not have cap clips on the centers and there were no nubs pressed on the smooth ramp of the wheel to the open center....

I'm not arguing one way or the other.  Just giving the OP what's in my parts book.  One thing I learned long ago was never to say never with Mopar.  Conversely, it's been almost 70 years since they rolled off the production line and who knows who did what over the years.  Now if someone took a pic of the part number stamped on the rim that has the clips to hold these dog dishes on and that number matched the book for 54 then they'd have something.

 

Data is what counts, not votes or anecdotal remembrances.

 

As for myself, I am probably going to go with moon discs, which means in another 70 years someone will claim they were factory, lol.

They look similar to early to late 40's ford smooth hubcaps. I think mercs and trucks used them too. Might look into those and see if they'll work for you.

Those look either newer or aftermarket. Does the rim have nubs or clips??

Looks like a JC Whitney cap that snaps onto a rim without the spring clips, probably from the 60s or 70s...these aftermarket caps might pop up on eBay on occasion...

They remind me of '71-'79ish Ford Pinto.  Double-check to make sure the diameter is correct.

So the rims do have small nubs to hold the cap on.  Im not sure if the rims are correct year and/or factory though.  The rims DO NOT have clips

Those look more like later rims to me.  My 87 Diplomat had similar rims and those numbs where to hold on the poverty caps, if you had them.

that wheel looks like circa 1970 +++/- ....these wheels were designed for bolt in center caps and wire baskets etc.  Looks very similar to a set of 1972 I have in the barn.

Pretty common to swap on later rims .... a 1954 would have had clips installed to hold the hubcap on ... I could be wrong though ... lots of changes through the years.

 

A later style rim through the 60's-80's would have the nubs. 

Also the original wheels width would be between 4" or 5"  while a later style rim would be wider for radials.

 

I think you could dress them up and make them look very traditional. I have kinda the same wheel.

Something of a problem I have, you have to realize that Dodge, Ford, Jeep, AMC, & others made wheels for the same bolt pattern. They made different sizes for the nubs on the hubcaps.

I have 3 wheels that will take a 8" hubcap, 4th wheel needs a 9" hubcap .... just something to be aware of, you need to measure and see if you have a matching set of wheels before ordering a set of hubcaps.
