Were the US or Canadian engines usually fitted with asbestos covered heat  shields.

This is the only one I have ever seen in this part of the world.

There were some heat shields but I've never encountered that particular style.  The exhaust manifold appears to be different than 'normal' also.  Got a wider angle pic?

Looks to be a split manifold, with an add on forward dump.

 This type of manifold was used in trucks and cars here so it needed to be sculptured differently to suit RHD.

pic of the original I pulled off FEF and the copy I made to avoid the rust monsters.  I've never seen anything added to the heat shields like asbestos, but doesn't mean it hadn't been removed or added.  Personal opinion from the parts  books interpretation additional material would not have been factory.

Those are the usual type that we had out here, Plain steel cover.

I have wandered if its an Army thing as that's where the motor was suppose to have come from.

must be a local down under thing.....the truck I am currently working came from New Zealand and though factory with a heat shield, I am guessing a local also sandwiched a nice hunk of asbestos in between as an added....it looks the exact pattern as your pic shows.......

I am not up on NZ trucks, some seem to have come straight from Canada others from Oz.

All I can say is I like it, I need to make a heat shield, mine is missing.

I wonder what would be a good modern replacement for the asbestos?

I used some of that header wrap strips and wrapped it around the heat sheild.

Sure would like to have one of those exh manifolds, or at least the front half.  Head start on duals when used with the rear half of mine

I have used heat shielding in different applications, and the material replacement for asbestos has been fiberglass...

there are plans here on the forum for a stock heat shield and I know there is at least one company (VPW I think) that repops them
