Ulu
Someone smacked my 09 Tacoma in the rear bumper, and the frame is pretty bent. Bed smashed up. Tailgate trashed. It got totalled by AAA, and I bought this 2012 Tacoma, for the settlement (plus a pretty penny more.) I got the same basic model (04 to 2015 or "second generation") as I don't like the new engines Toyota is putting in the 3rd gen 2016 models. plyroadking
I know how that goes! Except their insurance picked a fight over the "totaled" truck value and when the dust settled I got to keep the "totalled" truck and they bought this one for me!

Ulu
It's the Battlestar Galactica look... BTW, the Silverados and Tacomas out here are all built in Mexico, but the Tacoma comes out way ahead somehow. Also, I could have kept the old one for $8k but I wasn't interested in fixing it. I don't have enough time to fix the things that I want to work on.

William Davey
And I have a 2014 Ram 1500 with an Italian EcoDiesel engine, a German ZF 8 speed transmission that was assembled in Michigan (or Mexico depending on the model). So what the hell is an American truck anyway??

Todd B
I was raised with the motto "Buy American or go find a job in Japan". That being said, in 2011 I ordered a new Dodge 4 door dually and it was late on the delivery date to me. I called the dealer and he said it was tied up in customs on the Mexican border. That frustrated me but I got over it. Recently I ordered a 46 horse John Deere Utility tractor with all the bells and whistles. I wanted to put 3 grab hooks on a plate and bolt it to the top of the bucket for lifting items on the job. I looked at several parts stores to find made in America grab hooks. I finally gave in and found some that said made in China on the tag but not stamped on the hook. I had the hooks welded on the plate and then powder coated. I was bolting the bar on the bucket and noticed on the main bucket tilt cylinders of my brand new John Deere tractor there was a big punched in stamp that said made in MEXICO with big bold letters. So much for buying AMERICAN trucks and a quality AMERICAN tractor.

Ulu
The Ford 150s sell for more new but have a lower resale than Toyota. At least around here.

The black one is too nice to drive in the salt and Emily likes it too much to sell. So I bought another K30 to steal parts from to get the wrecked one going again. It's been a process but the wrecked truck is just about back together. It will be the winter truck till the salt and brine rust it completely away. Ulu
I was going to go through this with the Toyota but I keep having these distractions from working on my Plymouth so I just sold the damn thing off. I could have straightened the bent frame out myself, repaired the fiberglass bed (which is just like fixing a boat.) Everything else was really just minor scratches and the metal fenders and poly over fenders were fine. Cab was untouched. They shouldnt have totalled it but, it was fine with me. I didn't need the money I could have made on fixing it & I need more time to work on the P15 car. Now some other Gearhead will pick up nice Toyota and fix it up cheap. Everybody at work is asking me why I didn't use the Toyota powertrain in my 47 Plymouth. I guess they take me for a complete idiot sometimes.
plyroadking
Putting a toyota power train in any other type of car would be a nightmare, way too many wires and sensors for me!
Ulu
I build computers. The wiring is no problem, but the whole idea is indecent.

Ulu
There's no doubt I could have bought a 1500 Ram crew cab long bed brand new 2016 for the same money I paid for a used 2012 Toyota Tacoma. But taxes, insurance, gas and maintenance would all be higher. Now I admit I rather be in the Dodge if I got hit. But other than that the Toyota is more practical and fun for me. I'm sorry it's not American. It's a Japanese truck built by Mexicans. There's no getting around that. But I'm betting the Toyota dealer in Fresno (who is an American) made more profit on this truck than the factory workers who built it. Merle Coggins
For what it's worth... a quick search on Toyota USA shows Tacoma's are built in Texas. So even though Toyota is a Japan based company, it is a global company with several production plants here in the USA, to supply the North American market. Todd. I think your JD tractor may have been built at the Horicon, WI plant. I believe they build the garden tractors and other smaller tractors there. It's quite possible that it's just the cylinders that came from Mexico. John Deere, like many other major manufacturers are global companies that manufacture products in many parts of the world, from parts sourced from all over the world. I have come to understand this over the years. I'm made my living for many years working with Volvo Construction Equipment. Volvo is a global company based in Sweden. They manufacture equipment in Sweden, Germany, France, Mexico, South Korea, China, Brazil, and the USA.Depending on which model I'm working on, it could have originated at any one of those plants. Another example... My 2003 Honda Gold Wing was built in Marysville, OH. Although they've moved motorcycle production back to Japan a few years ago I can claim that my Honda was Made in America. And at that time I saw some data that showed that my Honda was manufactured with more U.S. sourced components than most Harley-Davidson's at that time. I can't prove the validity of that data, but it was interesting and stuck with me. Don Coatney
Merle, You are so correct it is almost scary trying to place the country of origin on many things today. 40 years ago when I lived in Columbus, Ohio I made several trips past the new under construction Honda plant in Marysville. I believe it is still in operation today.

Flatie46
Kinda related to this I guess. I work at a chain factory, and several years back we had a timing chain division in it. I was working on an old JEEP and bought a Cloyes brand timing chain for it at the local parts store. These dual true roller chains are highly recommended for the AMC V8 due to poor oiling in that area. When I got the chain it had made in USA with the flag proudly displayed on the box. I opened it and the chain had our stamp on it. At this time we had dropped the timing chain line maybe 2yrs before at our factory. I brought the box to work and showed it to the VP of manufacturing and asked him did we make this here and has been on a shelf that long? He said no probably came from India. I showed him the USA on the box and he said if remember right. They can put made in USA on it if at least 30% of it is made in the US including the box and packaging. He said there is a lot stipulations on it but just because you see "made in the USA" on something don't assume its actually 100% made in the US.
