Need to change oil in '49 B1B with 218.  What weight of oil do you use?  I figured this was an easy question but I searched this forum and the technical archives for "oil" and couldn't find anything.

try this thread http://p15-d24.com/topic/38901-oil/?hl=%2Boil+%2Bbrand

I think the search function filters out words of 3 letters or shorter.

You will find that there is no optimum answer--personally I use Valvoline Max Life 10w-40.  There are a few purist who use only  30wt non detergent, a lot of Rotella users and a lot of whatever is on sale.

I knew I couldn't be the only one who asked this question.  Now I know why the search engine didn't find anything.  After reading the above mentioned thread I don't know any more than when I started!  I'm thinking new, clean oil will work better than old, dirty oil but I don't have any scientific proof.

If you use the + sign before a word, the search function will then recognize the short word...+oil +weight for instance led me to this thread http://p15-d24.com/topic/38764-oil-recommendations-for-1950-b-2-b-flat-head/page-2?hl=+oil%20+weight

but no matter how many threads you check here, you will find more opinions than scientific fact when it comes to oil

a search will find a few white papers referenced here for oil or you can just use the search engine of your browser and search on Bob the Oil Guy...there you get a bit more useful information than a person's personal gum bumping narrative...

I think you pretty much answered your own question.  Not much sense in changing the oil if you're going to put dirty oil back in.  Most of our oil "knowledge" is based on what we've heard from people we believe to know what they're talking about or some successful ad campaign.  JMO

I do, and I run it in my 318 as well.... In my opinion the oils today contain nowhere near what's needs for the older style camshaft sand lifters and for the price it will never hurt anything. I also run heavy oil like 30 or 40 non detergent, but my truck does zero winter starts....thicker oil hurts nothing in these old flatties and makes the oil gauge look good ;)

I second ZROD,....I like the blend for old school engines.

Straight Castrol HD 30 or nothing. But nothing makes it run hot so I don't do that any more.

It depend on the condition of the engine and sludge. The more worn the engine is, the thicker oil I use. If it has lived most of its life running non-detergent oil and is all slugged up, high detergent oil can break loose the sludge and clog your oil pump pickup. The best solution in that case would be to remove the pan and try to remove all the sludge.

Second this, in Hot Florida I use Castrol straight 30 HD, I put in one less quart and add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil
