Caption says the DeSoto was parked so there is a chance no one was in it when it was hit. Only other vehicle I see photos of is a minivan. It must have been going at a pretty good clip to push the DeSoto that far through the sign post.

wow..that is quite a bit of damage for certain....being parked I am assuming the Desoto family is ok..but for the minivan?...it does not seem to be extremely damaged ..the crumple zones and such in modern cars are very good at minimizing damage inside the passenger compartments as most is absorbed prior to firewall contact..that poor DeSoto has seemingly crossed over...

I surely understand the anguish of that owner. Hard to see a special vehicle ruined or severely damaged in a flash.

Some usable parts still left.........   Looks like it was hit hard.

Excellent looking car before the wreck.....................

maybe I AM mistaken but in that far back shot it looks like the desoto started way back on other side of power pole and van pushed it arond pole, guy wires and across all grass and the next driveway and then thru the overhead sign laying on it and under it.  Is that what your seeing??  my eye sight is suspect tho.  If correct its a long slide sideways,  Would be interesting to get estimate of speed vs limit in that area

I don't think so. Here's a paragraph from the story that Dodgebe4ya posted.

"A Chrysler minivan traveling south on Route 31 left the roadway, going off the right side of the road, sideswiping a utility pole and then crashing into a parked 1950 DeSoto, which was pushed into a parked Volkswagen. Both were parked in the C.A.R.S. Auto Body lot."
